Dog Walking 20:00 [1]

Cycling 45:00 [3]

A quick few laps in Wash Park, in between grocery shopping, birthday present shopping for Graham, and making dinner...BBQ chicken, homemade mac-n-cheese, and sauteed asparagus. Graham turns 21 on Wednesday, which makes me feel that much older. And, sadly, I'm going to be out of town for his actual birthday, so we're celebrating on Friday, when Caitlin is here. All of my kids in one place...that hasn't happened since Christmas.

Dog Walking 20:00 [1]

Orienteering race 1:24:22 [4] 5.4 km (15:37 / km)

RMOC local meet. Green course at Peaceful Valley.

Except for #2, this went pretty well. It was probably a better day physically than navigationally, and that doesn't happen too much anymore. I was able to run for most of the course, but my knees are pretty sore tonight. Not painful sore, just achy sore.

I messed up #2 because I didn't see one little cliff on the map. So, I approached it from the south, contouring along a hillside, and when I hit the first cliff, I thought, "Hm, this is the southern-most cliff, which is what the control description said." But, the control wasn't there so I convinced myself I hadn't gone far enough, and kept going. I didn't see anything I liked along the way, relocated, and ended up back at that cliff. Then I convinced myself I *really* hadn't gone far enough, so went back, a little lower this time, and farther, and still didn't see anything I liked. So, I went back one more time and looked carefully at my map. Yes, there was a cliff to the south that was *outside* of the circle. So, I went to the southern-most cliff inside the circle (what a novel idea!), and there it was. Ugh!

The rest of the course went well. I hesitated at both of the pits because the controls were definitely *in* the pits and impossible to see unless you were on top of them.

But, like I said, I was just happy to be able to have run as much as I did.

Home Sweet Home

Note

A very busy day in the yard and in the house. My yard looks beautiful, and my house is coming along. Tomorrow is orienteering and picking up Graham at the airport for a week-long visit. Yay!

And the fun continues! Two and a half hours of crown work at the dentist this morning and a jury duty notice in the mail. I'm the lucky one.

Orienteering race 57:41 [3]

US Champs. Long course. Green X.

I would say this was a disaster, but it really wasn't. I made the best decision for me at the time, and that was to leave the course at #4. I was having zero fun up until then, clambering over, under and around rocks and deadfall. I'm just not strong enough to push through that crap. Plus, I worked too long at the start (my own doing) and almost didn't even go out. So, I wasn't in the right frame of mind to begin with, and it just got worse. Oh, well.

Note

And then the adventure began. After staying too long to watch the US WOC Team announced, I went speeding down to Newark Airport to catch my flight. First I had to stop in at the Parsippany Hilton to get my O-gear bag, which I had left on Thursday night. I made it to the airport 10 minutes past the closing of the check-in time and missed my flight. There were no more flights out of Newark to Denver that night, and the ones in the morning were sold out. The ones on Monday afternoon were $1,000! But, I found a flight out of JFK Sunday night at 9:30, so I jumped in a cab and "raced" over there...in traffic that was moving at a snail's pace. I made it with about 45 minutes to spare and $150 less in my bank account (expensive cab ride!). The flight ended up being a little delayed, so I grabbed a bite to eat and a cold beer.

We landed around 12:30 am, and my head hit the pillow by 2:00. I had to get up at 5:00, though to hop on a conference call. Then, dump my suitcase, repack, and head back to the airport for a flight to Dallas. Not the best of times for me.

Orienteering race 1:02:22 [4]

US Champs Middle at Lake Moreau. Green X.

Everything went great...except for stupid #2. Even looking at the control circle on the map in the comfort of my hotel room, it was difficult to picture what the control area should have looked like. It seemed to me it should be slightly up the hill, but no...it was down at the bottom of the cliffs. And talking to gail...she thought the same thing! She was just quicker to check the code of the control that couldn't possibly be hers. Ugh!

Orienteering race 27:27 [4]

US Champs - Sprint. Green course.

Mistakes on 6 and 7 were too big to make up. Oh, well. IIt was fun anyway.

An uneventful flight to Newark, sitting next to some elderly Christian evangelists from Colorado Springs, on their way to Israel. Seriously?? Good luck with that.

Orienteering 1:58:26 [3] 7.94 km (14:55 / km) +186m 13:21 / km

I vetted the Red course for next weekend's local meet at Manitou. I'm going to be at the US Champs, and I really wanted to get out on a map this weekend. It was definitely more challenging than the past few RMOC events. Beautiful day.
