Total Body Conditioning

Hiking 1:40:00 [3]

Since I had finished all of my chores yesterday, I took a hike today, up to the Devil's Head fire lookout tower, the only fire tower in Colorado still manned by the US Forest Service. It was basically an up and down hike...up 950' over 1.4 miles and then back down again. The trip up to the actual tower itself is another 143 steps straight up. Not a good idea for anyone nervous about heights.

Once at the top, you are afforded 100+ mile views in all directions. And today was clear enough that you could see that far.

You can make out Denver in the far distance.

And the tower itself.

Note

I am back in NJ for a few days. Out of the past 8 weeks, I have been on the road for 6 of them. I am ready to get home and be home for a while.

Strength Training 1:00:00 [3]

I went to the Sunday version of Total Body Conditioning and liked this instructor *much* better than the Saturday one. I think I'll be switching days. Plus, she was leaving today for a week at Nags Head, so she can't be too bad.

Note

Another 4 hours of conference calls today. What a wonderful Sunday!

Hiking 30:00 [2]

A shorter than normal walk through Wash Park. There's nothing like being on a 2-hour conference call that starts at 6:00 am. On a Saturday! And then spending the rest of the day working on an "emergency" project for the boss. No fun. :-(

Note

Flew to Tampa, FL, with an inordinate number of screaming children. I was very glad for that flight to be over.

Orienteering race 1:24:24 [3] 5.3 km (15:55 / km) +176m 13:39 / km

RMOC meet at Frisco Peninsula -- Green course (6.4 km Forerunner distance)

This was an epic trip, but not for the orienteering, which was fine. Not a very inspiring course, but I think that might be a difficult task now that most of the peninsula is logged and wide open. A couple of superfluous up's and down's...could have been more interesting, but it was nice to get out on a map. Plus, I only fell once which was a pretty good feat considering how much logged area we went through.

I was a little off on #4 and #10, but only by a few seconds. Otherwise, it was a pretty clean course, which it should have been since it was so open.

Now for the epic part. The estimated travel time to Frisco from my house, according to Google maps, was about 1 1/2 hours, which is about what it took me to get there. All good. On the way home, though, I hit traffic about 2 miles east of Frisco and was in stop and go traffic for the next 40!! miles. It took me 2.5 hours to go that distance. And when I saw what was causing this colossal backup, I said quite a few bad words. It was a zip-line facility that was right next to I-70. You could see all of the towers from the highway, and the people zipping along. As soon as we passed that, the traffic opened up and it took me 1/2 an hour to make the rest of the trip. OMG!

Strength Training 1:00:00 [3]

Group Power class with a sub, who changed up the routine to a much more cardio-focused one. It was great!

Hiking 50:00 intensity: (25:00 @2) + (25:00 @3)

I took a walk around Wash Park today to try to work the injected cartilage around my knee. I got the first Syn Visc shot (in a series of three) today. My doctor thought I should try it one more time since the last time I did it was right after my micro fracture surgery, and it was hard to tell if it really did anything or not. I'm not sure if it will really help, but it was a worth a try so I wouldn't always be wondering.

There was more talk today about another surgery to clean out some scar tissue. It's so bad that it was difficult to shoot in the Syn Visc today...too much blockage.

Cycling 20:00 [2]

I took my car in for some maintenance servicing. It needed a little sprucing up after the drive across country.

Cycling 15:00 [3]

A little faster back to the dealership since I cut it a little close, and there was a clear chance of them closing before I got there. But, I made it.

Cycling 56:00 [3] 14.2 mi (15.2 mph)

Along the beach road and down Rt. 12 to Bodie lighthouse. Bike computer read 109 degrees. Probably not the smartest thing to do on a day like today.

Hiking 45:00 [2]

A shaded hike through Nags Head Woods with Mom. The first part was on a new ADA trail, which was probably the best example of this type of trail I've seen.

Cycling 2:26:00 [2] 28.0 mi (11.5 mph)

A relaxed group ride with Don, Erik, Karin, Marit and Pete. We rode from Kitty Hawk Municipal Center up to Duck, pretty much on back roads by the bay the entire way. The last few miles into Duck reminded me of why we stopped vacationing there years ago. There was a traffic backup the entire way into Duck on the beach road, with bikes and people all over the sides of the road. Very busy and very stressful. We stopped in Duck for a cold drink and then headed right back home. I was very happy to get on the relatively quiet back roads again.

At the end, my bike computer said the temp was 104 degrees. Way too hot to be biking!
