Note

I woke up this morning and still had a headache. I took some ibuprofen and went to the meet site to see if I could drop to Brown. It was a little more complicated since it was a chase start, but Ed was accommodating and made it happen.

I went to the start to see if I could go out before the start window for my course, but they didn't have any extra maps there. So, I waited around for about 30 minutes while Alex was dispatched to try to find some. While I stood there in the pouring, very cold rain, I started to get a little dizzy and my brain was a little fuzzy. I figured that it really didn't make much sense to go out at all. What if something happened and I passed out or something. It was prime hypothermia weather, which just would have compounded things.

So, I went back to my car, changed into dry clothes and headed home. A little disappointing, but I was actually proud of myself for being smart about the situation instead of doing what I normally would have done and just gone out. Maybe I'm finally maturing a little. :-)

I'm going to try to get in to see the doctor tomorrow and see if I can get a definitive diagnosis.

Orienteering race 1:29:46 [4] 6.03 km (14:52 / km) +185m 12:54 / km

Troll Cup and Jr. Nationals. Green Y course. 4.8 km/215 m climb/18.7 min/km

Not a glorious day. The navigation was fine, but just so slow. Not that I was surprised since I've done next to no training this year and Mt. Tom is steep. We never got a straight uphill leg like I was expecting...maybe tomorrow. Phil, the course setter, was at dinner with us yesterday and he asked what course I was running. When I told him Green Y, he grimaced and let out a small cry under his breath. He said, "I made that a tough one. I think it's worse on Day 2." Yay!

I did have a bit of an injury today, too. On the way to #3, I fell...one of those falls where you do down very quickly. I didn't have much time to get my hands out to brace myself and somehow my head whiplashed back and forth. I lay there for a few seconds, thinking "That didn't feel right." I got up slowly and felt a little fuzzy headed. For pretty much the rest of the course, I didn't feel right, and by the time I finished, I had a raging headache, but just in the front part of my head. I didn't start feeling "normal" again until partway through the Board meeting, and this evening I feel fine. Hopefully there won't be any residual effects.

I might try to drop to Brown tomorrow.

Cycling 47:40 [3] 10.36 mi (13.0 mph) +64m

Yay! Since I am a fair-weather rider, this was my first ride of the season. Kept it short and slow, just to ease in the various body parts. There were a lot of pastey white bodies on the W&OD today, but it was good to see so many folks out and enjoying the day. At one point there was a swarm (gaggle? murder?) of moms pushing babies in running strollers. They had good trail etiquette and stayed on one side of the trail.

The high point of my ride was when I accidentally figured out how to switch to the next podcast using my wireless earbuds! No more slogging through boring podcasts about some jazz singer who just released his latest album. Gloriousness!
