Strength Training 1:00:00 [3]

Body Pump! I went a little light on the weights, but still felt the burn (or it could have been the Bern).
5 PM

Running 33:54 intensity: (15:54 @3) + (12:00 @4) + (6:00 @5) 2.72 mi (12:28 / mi) +5m 12:24 / mi

I decided that the rain/sleet/hail/snow mix that had been coming down since yesterday morning was not going to stop, so I just plunged in. It wasn't that bad once I got going, but when I turned north at the end of the park, all of that mess was coming right at me.

This was a little slower than last time, but my legs felt a little dead. Plus, I did 12 x 30 intervals and found that I had to walk in between them. But, I'm still happy with my running and with the fact that my knees are hanging in there.

Cycling 50:00 [3]

Since it was snowing outside, there would be no biking on the trail. So, I went to the gym and did the Around the World program again, but at a tougher level. There was some degree of sweating going on.

Swimming 1:00:00 [3]

Swim practice with my training team. We raced 25s...4 of them. I was paired with Rene, a woman who I've been swimming with in practice since Day 1. She beat me each time, but not by much. And she's about 10 years younger. I was happy with that.

Swimming 1:00:00 [3]

The last early Sunday morning practice. I find it so ironic that when my kids were younger, I let them know that they could do any sport they wanted to except swimming! I was not going to get up early on the weekends to take them to practice. Well, look at me now.

This was a really good practice. The coaches took away the lane dividers and first had us swim our warm up like usual, just without the dividers. That was fine, with just a few crashes. But then they put out three balloon "buoys" and we spend the rest of the time swimming in one mass group around the buoys. First counter-clockwise and then clockwise.

That was quite an experience! It was a good start to getting the feeling of being surrounded by people, touching other people, getting kicked, swum over, etc. I was frantic at the beginning, but then was able to settle down and remember all of the pointers my coaches have given me...focus on my breathing (most important so I don't panic!), stretch out my arms, keep my legs kicking. I'm kind of excited for when our open water practices begin in June.
1 PM

Running 35:45 intensity: (6:00 @3) + (29:45 @4) 3.11 mi (11:30 / mi) +4m 11:27 / mi

My friend, Lisa, and I went out to Boulder to survey the race course. We drove the bike course just to see what it was like. Not too bad, but we'll know better next time when we ride it.

Then we ran the running course. Our coaches taught us how to use a metronome app to keep on pace and train you to take smaller steps to begin with. What a difference that made! I improved my per mile time by 3 minutes! It really made me keep going at a steady pace. I was so happy after we finished this. It definitely gave me more confidence for the race.

Afterwards, we stopped at Starbucks on Pearl St. in Boulder and sat outside in the sunshine, drinking our coffee, and deciding that we had quite a good life.

Note

I hit 36.6 mph riding down off the Chatfield dam today!
10 AM

Cycling 43:05 [3] 10.12 mi (14.1 mph) +69m

The tri group had a session this morning at the sponsoring bike shop on basic bike maintenance. Afterwards, a few of us had planned on going for a ride.

IMG_0350

Within minutes, we dropped the two women on the right, and it was down to the three of us -- Lisa, me, Lainey. It was quite a fabulous ride. The weather was perfect...not too hot or cold and cloudy, with no beating sun. Unfortunately, I haven't gotten the whole Garmin Edge process down yet, so our ride got divided into two parts - the out and the back.

Here is a picture of us at the turn around. We made Lainey take it because she's 5'11" and has the longest arms.

Cycling 41:00 [3] 10.31 mi (15.1 mph) +41m

This is the "back" part of our ride. A little faster -- yay! It was also a little weird to be riding through Chatfield, with no orienteering involved. I was finally one of those bike riders on the road in Chatfield.

Running 25:00 intensity: (10:00 @3) + (12:30 @4) + (2:30 @5)

Back in Denver for a few days. A short run that included some intervals.

Swimming 25:00 [3]

Then a swim session at the gym.

Running 45:31 intensity: (9:00 @3) + (36:31 @4) 3.1 mi (14:41 / mi) +63m 13:49 / mi

Week 3. Day 3. (2.1)

A late afternoon run on the prairie and then headed over to the hospital to pick up Mikell's truck that had been left there.

There were some snow showers when I started out. Nothing stuck.

Swimming 45:00 [3]

I'm back in Laramie, so I went to the rec center for some swimming. For anyone coming to the Rocky Mt. Orienteering Festival this summer, the rec center is a marvelous place to visit. The pool is fabulous. If you're camping, it's a great place to get cleaned up. And, it's the location of our Saturday night dinner.

Strength Training 1:00:00 [3]

Body Pump at the gym with the snow swirling outside.

Cycling 45:00 [3] 8.0 mi (10.7 mph)

Then I hopped on the bike at the gym since there would be no biking outside today. Or tomorrow.

I did the "Around the World" workout, where I climbed all of the major mountain ranges around the world. #superwoman

Swimming 45:00 [3]

I went to my gym to get in a swim practice just in case I can't make it any other time this week. It was beautiful because when I got there, there were only 2 other people, and they left soon after I arrived...Is it something I said??
2 PM

Running 41:31 intensity: (9:00 @3) + (32:31 @4) 2.93 mi (14:10 / mi) +5m 14:06 / mi

Week 3 Day 2 (2.2)

My boss declared it a half day today so we could go home and get our gardens ready for the weekend storm. Another storm with 12+" of snow is forecasted. Sadly, we had to cancel our local meet tomorrow because we had a lot of school groups planning to attend, and the leaders were concerned about their safety. Plus...a foot of snow.

Before I protected my garden, I decided to get in a quick run in the park. It was surprisingly crowded for the middle of the day. Probably everyone trying to get in one last workout outside before being cooped inside for the weekend.

Running 38:54 intensity: (9:00 @3) + (29:54 @4) 2.6 mi (14:58 / mi) +34m 14:23 / mi

Beginning back with Week 3 of C25K for my triathlon training.

In Laramie to help Mikell after he had a bit of a fall off his bike last Thursday. From what witnesses say, he and his bike went flying through the air (without the greatest of ease), and he crashed down on his left (dominant hand) side. He broke his clavicle, 3 ribs, and injured his hip flexor. Surgery is tomorrow to put a plate on his clavicle to stabilize it and then 4-6 weeks of recovery. My most frequently used words on this trip are, "Poor baby."

Needless to say, guitar playing is a no-go for awhile.

Swimming 1:00:00 [3]

I was so close to turning over and going back to sleep this morning when my alarm went off at 6:00 am. But, knowing that I'll be missing next Sunday's practice, I dragged myself out of bed, chugged a cup of coffee, and was off to swim practice.

In the end, as usual, I was glad I went. It felt so easy today and...I was moved up to the next, faster lane by my coach! So, something is working.

Mt. Biking 56:24 [3]

Collecting controls from yesterday since most of the standard control collectors had to leave right after they were done competing. :-(

In the end, I had 3 other folks help me out, so it went much quicker than when I set them out. I was so happy and appreciative when they volunteered to help out. I was almost in tears at the prospect of another 5 hours at Chatfield.

My stalwart helpers: Terri Chawla, Brooke Mann, and Chris Silva.

Note

At one point yesterday, I had to cross this beaver dam, carrying my mt. bike, with a backpack full of controls and gallons of water. Yikes!

IMG_0327

Mt. Biking 35:00 [3]

Putting out the last of the controls. The event was pretty successful. We got lots of participants, but never really felt overwhelmed at registration. I think because we suggested that not everyone should show up at the beginning of the registration window and because we had so many superstar volunteers. And, I got some kudos on my courses, which is always nice.

A few glitches: two e-punch boxes were bad - one was just dead and one had something wrong with the timing. The map printing was a debacle. When I went to pick them up on Friday evening, they had printed them on card stock! Not quite what I meant by "slightly heavier" paper. They reprinted them and, unfortunately, when I picked them up Saturday morning, I didn't notice that the two Orange courses had been printed at some weird scale (around 1:12500). Oh, well, I couldn't have done anything about it anyway. No one complained, so I'm sure they didn't even notice.

Hiking 49:00 [3] 2.08 mi (23:34 / mi)

Hanging controls for tomorrow's Chatfield event. I was able to ride my mt. bike to most of the controls.

Mt. Biking 2:15:32 [3] 12.0 mi (5.3 mph)

I put out most of the controls today; just a few close-in ones left for tomorrow. I'm sure I looked comical, as usual, with controls sticking over my head, out of my backpack. At times, I had multiple gallons of water in the pack, too. And there were several beaver dams to cross. I almost fell in on one of them.

I was out there a total of 5 hours and now I'm beat.

I'm the course setter for next week's Chatfield event, so I thought I'd go down and make sure the river was crossable. It is.

Cycling 41:31 [3] 9.8 mi (14.2 mph) +25m

A short, but cathartic ride around Wash Park. I think spring has finally arrived to stay, but I'll still knock on wood as I write that.
