Cycling (Trainer) 45:00 [3]

This was done indoors since it's spring in Laramie, and the winds are howling and the snow is flying.

Running 1:02:00 [2] 3.88 mi (15:59 / mi)

This could possibly be labelled as orienteering, but really, I was just running trails at Round Mt., checking for any new trails made by campers and ATVers.

It was such a beautiful day. This meet is really going to be great. I just love Round Mt.!!

Cycling 1:20:36 [3] 20.0 mi (14.9 mph)

Another trip along the Cherry Creek and S. Platte trails. Lots of smoke in the air and some pretty wasted people. The joys of 420 celebrations.

Orienteering race 1:22:26 [4] 7.2 km (11:27 / km) +156m 10:20 / km

RMOC local event at Bear Creek Lake Park. Red course.

This was the most fun I've had in an orienteering race in a long time, mainly because I started about 30 seconds behind Sharon, unbeknownst to me. I had been talking to a bunch of folks about A-meet stuff, and ended up being one of the last to start. Well, Sharon had been talking to a bunch of folks, too, so she was also a late starter.

I saw her going into #1 and that started the chase game for the rest of the course. I felt like one of those newbies who runs around like a chicken with its head cut off while the stalwart veteran just plods along hitting each control. Well, it wasn't quite that bad, but that's how it felt.

We traded the lead back and forth until I stepped on a cactus...oww! I had to take off my shoe and sock to pull out the thorn and by the time I had my wits about me again, Sharon was down a hill and across a stream. I stayed on the near side of the stream for a while so she wouldn't see me behind her, but then I couldn't find a good place to cross...the stream was quite raging.

Once I got to the other side, she was still just ahead of me...I could see her the whole time. I kind of caught up at #11 because it was a control where you went in and came out on the same trail, so then she saw me and took off. I took another bad crossing through some thick stuff, so she pulled ahead to the next control. She said she knew she was soooo far ahead of me, she had the luxury of taking a drink at that water control. I told her, "Sharon, I saw you go in and out of the control. I was right there."

Then we had a few controls up top, where I kept her in my sights, but from 14 to 15, she took a much, much better line and was ahead by quite a bit. I was on top of a big hill and could see her at the bottom, already running back toward the stream. WTF??

But then, she made a fatal error and I caught up. She took a trail route to #18, and I stayed on a straight line, and we met at the control. She was not happy! Then, we both punched in at the last control together and at the finish together. I beat her by 30 seconds. Needless to say, there was MUCH discussion about route choices and her mistake into 18 afterwards. It was a lot of fun! And we both beat our goal of being less than twice Graham Baird's time.

Cycling 1:13:05 [3] 15.8 mi (13.0 mph)

Rode out the Cherry Creek trail and south along the Platte River. It was very hot out today...well, compared to what it has been. Rain tomorrow, though, which will be good.

For everyone at West Point this weekend, here is a photo of the QOC crew from the 1979 Lake Frederick meet, sponsored by Perrier. Note the same cabins in the background.

Cycling 1:05:03 [3] 16.3 mi (15.0 mph)

Some easy laps around Wash Park. I didn't want to get too far from home because one of my knees had been sore and I wanted to be able to make a quick dash home if it really began to hurt. It did not.

There is a 15 mph speed limit for bikes in the park, and there was actual a park ranger parked at the side of the road, monitoring the bikers. I had heard of some people getting tickets last fall, so I guess it's true.

Reminded today that no matter how many weight training classes you take, 5 hours of hauling rocks out of a garden is back breaking work.

Orienteering race 1:08:14 [4] 7.2 km (9:29 / km)

First meet of the season. Cherry Creek State Park. Red course.

I had volunteered to run the Start area, so I did that for about an hour and a half before I set out. In the near past, I could easily have seen myself not even going out and just continuing to help, but Troy showed up to take over, so I had no excuse. Plus, I was pretty excited about orienteering, even if it was just Cherry Creek.

And, as anticipated, it was mostly a terrain run. The park is so open, and I spent a lot of time in it last year setting courses, so there was little navigational talent needed. I have to say, though, I did slightly miss on two controls...like 15s on each one...because I thought I remembered those particular control features, but I did not. So, I was just a bit off on both of them. Other than that, it went fine, and I ran for pretty much the whole thing.

Cycling 1:16:00 [3] 13.8 mi (10.9 mph)

Went for a bike ride around Laramie...a Tour de Laramie, if you will. Started out with some sun, coolish temps, and no wind. Well, by the time we had made our way to 287, the winds had picked up and the sun was gone. Then, when I turned west onto the road over the railroad tracks, towards the Laramie Greenbelt trail, I was biking into winds so strong that I was out of the saddle, in the easiest gear, and still barely moving. Oh, and it had started to snow! I told Mikell that if he turned west again, I would not be following.

Made it back to the UW campus, and it was sunny again, no wind to speak of, and no snow. Crazy!
