Swimming 1:01:07 [3] 2.0 km (30:34 / km)

I finally got back into the pool after a bit of a hiatus. I tried to go last week, but other things kept me away from the pool. I could feel that it had been awhile but I still managed to put in a 2000m workout, which is good for me. It was also a nice break for my hamstring. Not much straight swmming today...just a lot of drills.
3x200 (swim; kick/swim; drill) - 8x75 (25free/25breast/25free) - 8x50 (odds=swim; evens=kick) - 8x50 pull with buoy (my personal favorite!)

Running (Road) 28:45 [3] 3.0 mi (9:35 / mi)

I had intended to do a longer run, but my right hamstring/butt muscle started hurting as soon as I began running. This is something that's been around for about a month now and doesn't seem to be getting any better. I can't remember any acute injuries that would have pulled anything, but everytime I run now it starts hurting, and stops hurting soon after I stop running. I need to figure out how to speed the healing. Do any budding sports therapists out there have any suggestions?

Cycling (Trainer) 1:00:00 [3]

I decided to do this session at a lower cadence and a harder gear as a change of pace. I usually treat these workouts almost as spinning classes.

Running (Trail) 51:27 [2] 4.8 mi (10:43 / mi)

Did some more trail running at Prince William Forest. It was a beautiful day in the beginning, but then clouded up and began to look like rain. I felt pretty good, but my legs were still a little tired from yesterday. I was happy to see a lot of people (relatively speaking) using the park. Sometimes I wonder if the populace of NoVa even knows this park exists.

Running (Trail) 1:48:31 [2] 9.25 mi (11:44 / mi)

Ran some trails at Prince William Forest. Turkey Ridge Trail to South Valley and then out to Mawavi Rd. Up to the Scenic Loop, around to High Meadow Trail and then back to Turkey Run Ridge via the Little Loop Trail. It was a beautiful afternoon with perfect weather for running. It was nice to get out after a few lazy days.

Orienteering 1:10:00 [1]

Scouted out more areas in PWF, specifically inside the scenic loop on the western end. It was a little thick, but still had mostly runnable areas. However, it was quite a contrast to the distinct spur/reentrant topography in other areas of the park in that it was very subtle with not much elevation change. Could make for a very interesting area. While I was out there I noticed the sky looked like a typical snow sky, and indeed, later tonight we got a few flurries. I enjoyed watching the first snow of the season...then I brined my turkey.

Cycling 1:00:00 [3] 18.2 mi (18.2 mph)

Guess what I did today! That's right, my Monday evening trainer session. Tonight I watched "Sister Act 2." But the better news is that I went for a pedicure yesterday and got a brand new color on my toes. In honor of the Canadians being added to whichever permutation of the Blind Tangerine that surfaces next year, I went with the OPI color "Nice Color, Eh?" from the new Canada collection. It's beautiful!

Running 1:09:58 [3] 7.4 mi (9:27 / mi)

On the one day of the week when I could sleep in to my heart's content, I woke up at 5:40 and couldn't go back to sleep! Argh. But, I put those extra hours to good use and went to PWF to run the scenic loop. I usually run it as an out and back on one side of the loop, but this morning I decided to just run around the entire thing. It was a nice change, and it was good to know that every step I took brought me closer to the finish...even the first step!
Splits: 3:23 (that's the .4 part); 10:26 (there's a massive hill in this mile); 9:41, 9:39, 9:06, 9:29, 9:27, 8:48

Orienteering 1:30:00 [1]

Was scouting out potential areas for a future map in Prince William Forest. For more information, see Nadim's entry for this day. He has a much more thorough explanation than I do.

Strength Training 55:00 [2]

Another long and intense day at work. It was nice to work out the stress with the weights. I am desperately going to try to get in a swim tomorrow since it has been a while, but it will have to be in the evening as it is my turn to bring in donuts for the Friday Morning Breakfast Club, and woe to the person who is late with the donuts. It could turn in to a near-lynching situation.

Cycling 1:00:00 [2] 16.8 mi (16.8 mph)

I was sitting in a meeting from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. with no intermission, so it felt very good to hop on my trainer and stretch out my legs. The movie tonight was "Secret Window" with Johnny Depp...probably one of the sexiest men around. But I had to stop watching because it was too scary and I didn't want to have nightmares.

Orienteering race 1:24:14 [4] *** 7.6 km (11:05 / km) +270m 9:25 / km
11c

I was less happy with this run. Seriously messed up on #2 - I was not paying attention and ran up a parallel stream before the one I wanted. Everything matched up until I thought I had gone farther than I should have and then hit a trail that wasn't supposed to be there...doh! And #8 - this was even stupider. Came out of the refreshment stop, feeling very refreshed, and ran down one finger to the left, but when I hit the woods, navigated as though I had run down the finger to the right. Again, everything matched up fine until I hit a big, fat ditch and then a trail, neither of which were supposed to be there. Oh, well...live and learn...hopefully!

Orienteering race 1:15:38 [4] *** 7.9 km (9:34 / km) +175m 8:37 / km
14c

I was very happy with this run. The orienteering was not extremely difficult, so I didn't have any problems with the controls. My biggest error was a stupid veering off between 12 and 13 that put me in the middle of a field of sticker bushes. So stupid. That lost me about 5 mins and dropped me back one place. Otherwise, I was pleased...first time under 10 min/km in a long time. But I guess if you're going to do that, this is the place.

Running 28:46 [3] 3.0 mi (9:35 / mi)

Ran my usual course through the neighborhood. There was more traffic than I had expected on a non-school day (Election Day...make sure you vote!). It felt like I was going so slow...I had increased my weights during Sunday's weight training, and I could still feel it in my legs. However, when I finished my run, the time was just about where it has been on the days that I felt like I was flying. Isn't it weird how your mind plays such an important part in how you feel while working out?

Monday Nov 7, 2005 #

Cycling 1:00:00 [2] 17.3 mi (17.3 mph)

Another hour logged on the trainer. I should start keeping track of my distances and plot out my course on a trans-US highway...maybe Rt. 50. Start in Ocean City, MD and finish in San Francisco (I believe that's where it ends). The movie tonight was an all-time favorite (although the books were better)...Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.

Orienteering 20:00 [2] **

This was an aborted effort on a Red course. For the first time in a long time, I was absolutely not into this today and was having zero fun. I also twisted my ankle, a stinger, coming out of the first control and decided by control #4 not to risk hurting it more before next weekend. A very depressing day.

Strength Training 55:00 [2]

Just so this day wouldn't be a total loss, I came home and did my weight training so I wouldn't aggravate my ankle any more. I'll ride the trainer tomorrow. I travel again this week, this time to Las Vegas. I should have more training opportunities than I did when I was in Denver a few weeks ago.

Running (Trail) 51:19 [3]

Returned to PWF but went for a trail run this time. Again, a beautiful day. Ran down from the Visitor's Center to Quantico Creek and along the trail to the suspension bridge. Continued along Quantico Creek and then turned around and ran back up the dirt road to the handicap trail. The park has renovated this trail, removing the asphalt and replacing it with a composite mulch trail, held together by some sort of resin. It was very solid, but spongy and soft to run on.

Running 1:07:34 [3] 7.1 mi (9:31 / mi)

Ran the scenic road at Prince William Park. It was a beautiful day and, once again, I felt good. No aches or pains anywhere. Splits were 9:30; 9:50; 9:52; 9:16; 9:10; 9:37; 9:35; :44. There were squirrels everywhere and I saw about 5 or 6 deer. There were also more people in the park than I thought I would see. Maybe because the weather was so gorgeous.

Swimming 55:00 [2] 2.0 km (27:30 / km)

Squeezed in an hour of swimming. Was able to get in more distance than I thought I would.

4x100: swim/kick/drill/pull; 3x100: kick w/fins(25ez/25fast/25ez/25fast); 200 drill; 1x1000; 100 easy breast
