A semi-relaxed hike on the Nature Conservancy trail and part of the Dale Ball trail in Santa Fe. Another beautiful day.

Today we drove a very winding road through the Gila National Forest to get to the Gila Cliff Dwellings. While the dwellings were interesting, the overwhelming winner was the forest itself. What an unbelievably beautiful place. The trail we found was perfect.

I was also surprised at the extensive damage to the Gila River basin from the floods last September. I had only really heard about the damage in CO, but almost everywhere we went in NM, we saw some pretty bad damage, as well. That was one powerful storm!

Hiking 1:00:00 [2]

Last day in Big Bend. Hiked the Oak Creek trail to see where the author of "Beneath the Window" grew up. I started reading the book the other day and find it very fascinating. Makes the park come a little more alive.

An uneventful drive to Silver City, NM. The most exciting part was passing this store permanently installed structure. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prada_Marfa.

Hiking 1:45:00 [2] 3.6 mi (29:10 / mi)

Another day down in the desert. We wanted to explore the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive, since we didn't do that last time. Our first stop was at the Burro Mesa Pour Off trail. A pour off is what they call the ledge at the top of a waterfall. This one was at the end of a series of washes that I'm sure get pretty roaring after a rain. I would not want to be caught in that slot canyon when a wall of water came washing rushing in.

This is us standing at the edge of the pour off:

And this is what is directly behind (below) us. That person hiked up another trail to get to the base of the pour off:

And this is me in the slot canyon and then climbing out of it:

And here is a beautiful scenic picture I wanted to take, but *someone* insisted on being included:

Hiking 30:00 [2]

After Burro Mesa, we kept driving down, down, down to the desert floor, where the temp topped out at 93F! We went to the western edge of the park, to Santa Elena Canyon, which was similar to the Boquillas Canyon, but seemed bigger and more awesome.

This was taken looking back out of the canyon. The ridge in the background, that drops off on the right-hand side, is the South Rim, where I hiked yesterday.

Hiking 4:41:03 [3] 11.72 mi (23:59 / mi) +1002m 18:57 / mi

Today was a test for me. Mikell wanted to run the South Rim trail, so I decided to hike it in the opposite direction. I haven't hike this long in years, and I just wanted to see if I could. And it went great! I was aiming for 5 hours, so was happy with my time. I felt fine the entire way until the very end, when the downhill got to my knees and the rocky terrain was bothering my feet. But otherwise, I consider it a success. A nice cold beer and juicy hamburger for dinner didn't hurt either!

Looking off the South Rim towards Mexico:

Looking down on the Chicos Basin Lodge as I started my descent. It looks so close, but it still took a long time to get there. I like how tiny it looks in the basin:

Hiking 30:00 [2]

On our first day in Big Bend, we drove down to Rio Grande Village to take a look around. At first we thought we might want to go through the new border crossing at Boquillas Crossing, but it was way more involved than we thought, so instead, we headed to Boquillas Canyon. On the way, we made a stop at an overlook to see the mighty Rio Grande river:

image

Also at this overlook, was the ever-present supply of wire scorpions, roadrunners, flowers, etc. On our last visit here, we lamented the fact that we did not get a wire scorpion, so this time I was determined to buy one, with the money going to the school children of Boquillas...of course!

We took the short hike to the canyon, passing yet more wire scorpions and the man singing for Jesus.

Hiking 1:00:00 [2]

We went subterranean today, hiking underground in Carlsbad Caverns. As someone with pretty bad claustrophobia, I wasn't sure this was such a great idea, but after the initial descent through the "hole to hell," it got a little easier to handle. Once we reached the very bottom and things opened up a bit, I was able to enjoy the scenery. The last bad bit, though, was the one minute-long elevator ride back to the top, where we were crammed into a very small elevator with many other people. I just kept praying the elevator would not break down...and it did not. I was very happy to be back above ground with a limitless supply of oxygen.

Mikell convincing me the "hole to hell" was really quite innocent:

A rickety old ladder that went even *further* down. We did not go down that one:

Hiked up the Permian Reef trail in Guadalupe Mts. National Park. It was an unbelievably gorgeous day, with temps in the upper 70s! Quite a change from Denver.

Dog Walking 20:00 [1]

Cycling (Spin Class) 1:00:00 [4]

I tried out a spin class today for the first time, and loved it! It was a great way to push myself into higher heart rate zones since when I just do it on my own, I don't really exert myself…at least not like that! Definitely have to start going to these on a regular basis.

Dog Walking 20:00 [1]

The geese are branching out from the park, probably in search of non-snow covered grass. Annie and I walked out this morning, into a gaggle of geese on the front lawn and a layer of goose poop on my front walk. Nice.

Strength Training 1:00:00 [3]

Strength Training 1:00:00 [3]

Group Power...and Marnie was there!

Hiking 54:56 [3] 3.2 mi (17:10 / mi)

Hiked through Wash Park, over to the Whole Foods on Washington St. to get a few ingredients for dinner. It was such a beautiful day…finally…and the park was packed with people enjoying the sunshine. I decided to skip the ski-O event up in the mountains because I didn't feel like (1) sitting in traffic on I-70, (2) being stuck in the snow storm that was happening up there, and (3) missing the beautiful day in Denver. I think I made the right choice.

Cycling (Trainer) 25:00 [2]

A little warm up before yoga class.

Yoga (Power) 1:00:00 [3]

Amber was subbing for Stacy, and I liked her style a lot. It felt good to stretch out.

On the drive home, I was listening to the 70's station on Sirius, and "Easy Come, Easy Go" by Bobby Sherman came on…brought back so many memories. I was totally in love with Bobby Sherman when I was a girl and watched Here Come the Brides religiously.
