Running 49:36 intensity: (3:18 @1) + (10:20 @2) + (34:50 @3) + (1:08 @4) 4.02 mi (12:20 / mi)
ahr:141 max:156

I ran at Great Falls Park with Meg, early in the morning. We started at the Old Anglers Inn, up the Valley Stream Trail, across to the trolley trail, down to the Tavern, and back on the C&O Canal. I felt very good, and it was nice to run with Meg again because we tend to push each other. Although, this morning's run was mostly about catching up with our lives. We hadn't see each other in a while. I missed her.

Orienteering 1:17:41 intensity: (26:13 @1) + (17:04 @2) + (19:30 @3) + (12:03 @4) + (2:51 @5) *** 4.21 mi (18:27 / mi)

Storamoo and I went to Westmoreland to hang controls. He was kind enough to take the more remote ones. The weather was decidedly different from yesterday. Today, it was freezing. We were hoping the sleet would hold off while we were out, and it did.

All the controls are hung, the indoor facilities are secured, the finish line refreshments have been purchased, and the maps have been printed (thanks, Valerie!). Now, will anyone show up to an O-meet in far-away Westmoreland on a day that is supposed to have a winter storm watch including sleet and snow? I think it will be a lonely day for this meet director.

Note

So, I loaded my Forerunner tracks on to the map, and it looks like one of the controls might be in the wrong reentrant. Everything else lines up with the tracks, so I have to believe that it correctly shows me in the wrong reentrant. Darn! Luckily, it's not that far out that I can't go out and check it in the morning.

I took the day off from work and went to Westmoreland to see how the courses that I had designed at home looked out in the woods. They worked out fine.

The weather was unbelievable. It was 65 degrees, with black-type flies buzzing around, and I was wearing a short sleeved shirt.

Running 29:59 [3] 3.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
ahr:145 max:156 shoes: Adidas

A short run through the hood before heading down to Virginia Tech for Pi Beta Phi's Parents Weekend. This is my last one since Caitlin graduates in 2.5 months. I can't believe it! And then she's off to Tucson to work on missile contracts for Raytheon. My little baby is all grown up. :-( :-)

Running 30:17 [3] 3.01 mi (10:04 / mi)

I opened the door and, lo and behold, it was snowing! So fine. It quickly turned to sleet, which was okay but it was a little stingy on the face. I didn't feel so great on this run, but I got it done, which is the key thing.

Yoga 40:00 [2]

I even managed to do some of the more advanced moves, like lifting one leg while doing yoga push ups.

Cycling (Trainer) 45:00 [2]

I was thinking of going for a short run today, but that never happened, so I spent some time on the trainer instead. It was probably a good thing because my knee was quite painful in the beginning. It must have been a little swollen from the weekend, so bending it so much did not feel great. But after a while, it loosened up and then felt better.

Orienteering 1:33:30 [4] *** 7.5 km (12:28 / km)
ahr:142 max:158

Red course at Patuxent River Park. It was a great day for running, a little chilly when you were just standing around, but it felt great in the woods. I didn't have too much navigational trouble with this course, except for #4. I came to a stream and wasn't 100% sure where I was hitting it. I had a choice of reentrants, one on either side of me, and I picked the wrong one. I got to the top, didn't see the control, and had to go over one. Oh, well. Other than that, everything went well. The woods weren't as green, overall, as the map made it seem. There were some patches of pretty thick greenbriar, though, and my legs were stinging in the shower.

I had some falls today, but nothing too bad. I've realized that the thing I do most often that makes me fall is to kick up a branch with one foot and then trap it behind the other so I trip myself. I did that a few times today. Not so graceful. Just a loud thump and "Oof" on the way down.

Note

My second longest training week of the year.

Running (Trail) 1:04:40 [3] 5.0 mi (12:56 / mi)
ahr:140 max:156 shoes: Salomon

I went for an early run at PWF today just to make sure I got something done. I've noticed that if I don't get a run in first thing in the day, the likelihood of it happening goes down.

It was a chilly morning, but the sunrise was beautiful. I thought I had the park to myself, but a call from Valerie later in the morning let me know that she and Sandy were out there, too, doing some real rogaine practice. They saw me leaving the park.

I felt good and, again, no falls! And, apparently, there was one stalwart spider out there as I ran through a single spider strand threaded across the trail. It made me think about the summer runs on these trails and how spidery they are. I'm glad it's winter.

As I was stretching afterwards, I heard a seagull in the sky above. It sounded so strange to hear a gull in the middle of the woods, but they come off the Potomac, which isn't too far away.

Hiking 45:00 [1]

Graham and I took Lucy and Jack to Lee Drive for a little walk. The dogs were sick all day yesterday, but they seemed to be better this morning. I thought a little fresh air would do them some good. Plus, we needed a good excuse to visit Carl's since it just opened for the season yesterday. Yum!

Running 30:00 [3] 3.01 mi (9:58 / mi)
ahr:142 max:159 shoes: Adidas

A run on the Hood loop. I did not feel good at all when starting out. Even the downhills were tough. But, I decided just to push through and not wimp out, which resulted in a faster time than the last time I ran this loop. I felt fine, no pains, just felt blah. Glad I didn't give up.

Running (trail) 40:00 [3]
shoes: Salomon

Just a quick run in PWF, sans doggies. I had been running errands all day, so just popped up to the park for a short outing. It was another beautiful day, hitting in the 70s again. The park was probably the most crowded I've seen it in a long time.

I felt good running, although a little thirsty since I'm not used to this warm weather. My knee felt good, and no other aches and pains surfaced. And no falls! I don't know the exact distance since my Forerunner ran out of power about 3 minutes in to the run. So the time is also an approximation.

Orienteering 1:24:13 [3] *** 7.9 km (10:40 / km) +180m 9:34 / km
ahr:137 max:157 shoes: Salomon

I went to Meadowood to run the Red course from the QOC meet in December. It went very well, with no falls at all! It's really fun now to have a Forerunner so that when I run old courses I can see how close I came to where the circle was. And today, I hit them all just fine.

On top of that, it was a stupendous weather day. The thermometer in my car read 68 when I started and 70 when I got back. It was just an unbelievable spring-like day. So nice to be outside.

Core Conditioning 40:00 [2]

Jack and Lucy's newest game is to try and bite my hair as I'm going up and down, doing crunches. They think it's hysterical. I do not.

Running 30:17 [3] 3.01 mi (10:04 / mi)
ahr:148 max:156 shoes: Adidas

A short, slow run around the Hood. It was nice to get out early, but man was it cold! My legs felt frostbitten by the first mile. It got a little better, but I was glad this was just a shortie.

Yoga 40:00 [1]

I am back in New Jersey for a few days. I didn't get to do my yoga this morning because work got busy very early, so I brought the DVD with me and worked out in the hotel room. That was kind of cool. It opens up another opportunity to work out.

Orienteering race 25:58 [4] 2.9 km (8:57 / km)

Qualifying sprint at Lake Fairfax. I ran this early so I could help Valerie with registration and e-punching, and the ground was still very icy and slippery. I overshot #4, which put me way behind, but it was still a fun course.

Orienteering race 30:44 [3] 2.6 km (11:49 / km)

Final A at Lake Fairfax. I was busy helping to start people in the very hectic finals, so I couldn't start at my appointed time. Plus, we ran out of Final B maps, so I just grabbed a Final A map and ran it with Valerie. We made a bonehead move while trying to cross the big stream, but otherwise it went well. It's always fun running with Valerie!

Orienteering 26:58 [2] 2.3 km (11:43 / km)

And, finally, Dave Pruden and I went out to collect controls.

This was a great meet...the running was a lot of fun and the potluck Winter Meeting afterwards was very enjoyable.
