Event: QOC Hemlock Overlook

Orienteering 1:35:21 [3] 7.14 km (13:21 / km) +227m 11:31 / km
I ran the Green course today, and the advertised distance was 5.1 km. I did go around a lot in the beginning because it was very steep. I tried to stay down by the water from 2 to 3, but I didn't see the trail...I thought the water might be up, covering the trail. So I ended up climbing and climbing and climbing to go up and around to 3. Then, to add insult to injury, I could not see the control just by looking down from the trail. So, I hesitated a lot, and then finally saw it.
Controls 4 and 5 were fine. I stopped by my car on the way to 6 to shed some layers and change to a short sleeve O-top. It was chilly and grey when I started, but by the time I got to #5, which was right by my car, the sun had come out and it had warmed up quite a bit.
Controls 6 - 9 were fine, with some beautiful running. But then disaster struck. I stayed high to get to 10, following the spur up and then curving around the top of the reentrant. But, I didn't curve enough and ended up in the wrong reentrant, with no control. I wandered a bit, trying to make things fit, but then just bailed to our 7th control, which was near. Even after relocating there, I still was slow into the control. I just couldn't read the area around there.
Today's courses were set by the course setting class, and Green wasn't too bad. Just a few controls that didn't look like doglegs on paper, but in reality, they were. And then another issue that I've notice more and more lately...poor placement of control numbers on the map. At Balls Bluff, the numbers were so far away from the controls, I almost went to the wrong control when I misread the control number. And today, a control number was placed on the connecting line for two other controls. That probably should have been part of the class.
