Note

The big DC HHH event was this past week, and Don really wanted to go...and Mom did not. So, we worked out a schedule where my brother, Erik, went up to Shepherdstown on Wednesday; my sister, Marit, went up for Thursday and Friday and brought Mom home with her on Friday night. I went over there for dinner and brought Mom to my house until today, when I drove her out to Kent Island, MD, to meet Don at the hash after party. It was nice to see Fred Hillman and Ken Williams there.

It was a nice drive out there except for the last 15 minutes. There hadn't been much crazy traffic except for some insane motorcyclist who went speeding past us at about 90 mph. But then, all of a sudden we came to a complete stop. Fire and rescue vehicles came screaming down both shoulders, and I could see that there was a pretty bad accident not too far ahead of us. After about 20 minutes, people started getting out of their cars and it was a crazy scene.

They eventually brought in a Life Support helicopter to help the two ambulances that were there. The road was opened about 45 minutes after we were stopped, and as we drove by the scene, there was the motorcycle that had passed us earlier, in a mangled heap on the side of the road. That made us very sad; I hope the driver survived.

Other than that, the weekend with Mom went okay. She slept a lot, or at least laid down, because I think it's easier for her to deal with the fuzziness in her brain when she doesn't have to process other information. But we did get to the Reston Farmer's Market and Lake Anne Brew Pub with Marit and Bob. We had two very nice dinners together and other than the sleeping, she didn't seem as "out of it" as the last time I was with her.

Today was the real test. I went out for a short bike ride after getting back from Kent Island. It felt so good to be out on my bike and to marvel at how far I've come in just a few months. From not being able to ride at all to having a new knee in there, allowing me to ride. I don't even think about what is inside of me, all of that metal and silicone or whatever it is. It just feels good not to be in pain.
