Backroads NZ day 8: Hike up Te Mata Peak . Nice climb from about 1/2 way up through forest, redwoods and then grassy ridgeline to Te Mata Peak

Then back for high tea lunch before getting bus to Palmerston N for the Northern Explorer train ride the following day

Backroads NZ day 7 from the Mangapa hotel we biked to the Haumoana Beachfront along the beach road to Gannet Beach and view of Cape Kidnappers. Back along the beach road then headed inland for nice rolling hills ride with views of Tukituki River and Te Mata Peak . Ended at quirky Red Bridge Coffee with 2 flat whites .

After lunch head to the Craggy Range vineyards for wine tastings

2nd night at Mangapapa Resort

Backroads NZ Day 6: Shuttle to Hika Falls on the Waikato River then I jogged ahead of the group to the hot springs at Spa Park and did a couple of cycles between the hot springs and the cold river

we shuttled to the Art Deco Valley Cafe near Hawks Bay then started out on the afternoon bike with some serious hills (3) on the backroads through the area . Then past the vineyards, fruit orchards and rolling fields to a trail on the levee bank of the Ngaruroro River . Past acres of orchards busting with apples to end at Pakowhai regional park in Hastings for quick shuttle to the awesome Mangapapa Hotel (2 nights)

Wednesday Feb 12, 2020 #

Backroads NZ day 5: great trip down the classIII Tongariro River (starting just below the outlet of the hydro scheme so a nice controlled flow) . No one fell out . Lori and I were the lead paddlers in our boat .

Beautiful crater lake . Lollipop loop trail and we went round clockwise (leaving the noisier walkers in the group going counterclockwise). They have a invasive mammals reduction program there so heard quite a good number of birds (tui etc).

Shuttle back to Hilton Lake Taupo . Went to dinner in town with the group in the evening

Backroads NZ day4 : Biking from Rotorua to Waikite Valley Thermal Springs (busy traffic road to start then very pleasant backroads riding through NZ countryside to Waikite Thermal Springs where we had lunch . I rode back from finish to take pictures .

Shuttle after lunch to Hilton Lake Taupo.

Backroads NZ day 3 :Shuttle to Karangahake area hike : up and over the ridge to Dickey Flat waterfalls (through a dark small 200m long tunnel) . Waterfalls were a very nice deep swimming hole and jumping off rocks location . Then back via the windows walk (taking us high up through the old mine workings above the river). Neat walk

Then shuttle to Black Swan resort on Lake Rotorua

Sunday Feb 9, 2020 #

Backroads NZ day 2: Kayak on Coromandel Peninsula from Hahei Beach to Cathedral Cove. Lori wasn't feeling too good so paired up with Colleen in the double kayak. Saw stingrays plus nice ocean paddle to very scenic spot of Cathedral Cove and back

Shuttle to nearby Mercury Bay Estate Winery
3 PM

Hiking 1:09:40 [3] 1.69 mi (41:13 / mi) +349m 25:06 / mi

hike to the top of Mt Pauanui overlooking the bay . steep climb with great views
Backroads day 2

Misc Outdoor activities ( sailing , etc) (body surfing) 30:00 [3]

good waves and nice body surfing on the Pauanui beach

then walk back to Puka Park resort (2nd night)
