Orienteering race 1:05:24 [3] *** 5.2 km (12:35 / km) +150m 10:59 / km

Badger meet / US champs Cat's Meow Green X - preran the courses . Rough start to #1 but after that pretty stable with cautious approach to make sure I stayed in contact with the map . Very technical terrain... no back stops .. relocating would be very difficult (unless you bailed a long way). Lost shoe just before go control so ran barefoot on one leg last 100 m to finish. So 7th place on M50+ out of 22 .

control retrieval on NE part of the map. Hauling bulky control stands plus emptying all the water. Nice and sunny at this point

BGR A meet middle distance practice event - after drive down went out on the Hepcat map . A little rough on #2 1 min wasted .. but then got into the map . Stayed with slow pace to make the most of reading the terrain and being ready for the US champs the next day . It was wet and slippery out there but the heavy rain stayed off until last 10 minutes. would have been better with ice bugs

OTNT at Leb Hills : nice format : 5 controls then handicapped score O box of 12 ( - 2 for over 45 years) - then 1 control to finish . Took it slow since calves still a little sore from Ripley . Headlamp was rather dim and damp conditions made finding the actual tapes somewhat problematic in the tall grass etc. Got first 5 well , then 2 in W end of box Ok, then got disoriented by following the newly mowed firebreaks . Took about 15 mins to relocate properly when I ended up S of the horse parking lot and got going again. Did all the controls in the mid section of box , then moved on to E section and did them too. So ended up doing them all - no handicap- .

Camp Ripley Minnegoat ... mass start .. suprisingly slow start with everyone almost walking and studying the map for the first 400m to control 1 (hard navigation started 15m into the leg !) . Pack ran a little wide on right into 1, short leg into 2 and then started to spread going into 3 (where Mike C was taking photos ) Speeding up with some trail running (400m) before more nav intense work in the pack going to 4 and 5 . After 5 it was Pete, Tom , Justin, Joe and I running in a loose pack . I nailed the pit at 10 ahead of Pete then ran with Tom and Justin through to 24 , we skipped 25 and they gapped me on the trail run back , Pete caught me at 26 (which we both missed by 75 m) . It was a good run in the fast open woods ; i was lucky that i didn't ever need to bail out to trail and relocate (which would have been quite time consuming). The map detail and visibility of features/ terrain itself was great.

Orienteering 20:00 [3] *** 2.0 km (10:00 / km)
