2016 summary
2016 was a great year for me. A good amount of great travel with activities logged on 4 continents this year.
We celebrated the New year in Hobart, Tasmania then I had a January trip to China for 3M before my retirement on March 1 . A fabulous camping/sailing trip with Mike&Julia, Jim&Kathi and Lori to Virgin Islands in March started off retirement properly and had a 60th birthday celebration. A Maryland trip in May was followed by the excellent Wyoming Laramie days O fest in June/July. A Tuscany culture/wine/food/bike trip and 3 day UK visit in October was the highlight of the fall. A quick Dec trip to Maryland got in a nice O meet along the banks of the Potomac. Good fun travel to interesting places !
On the activities front: 456 hrs total 2468 miles! (an annual PR)
1) Biking: lots of local trips ~1575 miles on Gateway/Brown's Creek mostly mid week to either enjoy brunch/ a beer/coffee at Stillwater or for general "enjoy the open road" type training.
2) Orienteering: 315 km 560 controls ; a good year and with plenty of action: highlights were setting the rogaine at Drummond ( an awesome area) ; Straight Lake Minnegoat (very rough start but good finish), Laramie 5 days (just great running) , and Possum Trot (2nd place behind Andrei) .
3) Swimming : 150 miles : a good year : Bayfield swim time was a few minutes longer than my best at 1:10:09 due to current issues.
4) Kayaking: 227 miles : started out with a frozen waterfalls cruise on the Kinni on Feb 21st and followed with 20 other trips on waters old (St Croix, Kettle, Kinni, Namekagon, Snake) and new - Hurricane Hole St John USVI, Eau Claire River (2 sections), Snake (Ford Township br - hwy 3), High Island Creek, #1 section of Namekagon, Straight River. Just enjoyed going out on sunny days in summer in middle of week and having rivers to myself .
5) Trail running: 101 miles - did a couple of the Endless summer series runs (fun and good beer pizza afterwards) plus many good training runs close to home to keep myself in shape..
2017 goals
roughly same as 2016 - 450 hrs 2500 miles total with a good blend of on/in water (some new rivers ?) , trail running and orienteering, plus fun biking on varied locations around the planet ( Feb: New Zealand , May: Maryland, August: UK , ?) .
Paddle, swim, bike, navigate, run onward!
All the best for 2017
