Cardio (Bike) 25:00 [3]

Random @ 17

Weights 31:00 [3]

Handball 40:00 [1]

Cutthroat with experience player and second-timer (the first woman to return to our group in my three years playing). Won all four - though I had to come back from 8-14 in the third, but tweaked my calf in the third game again. Ice and vitamin I seem to be doing the trick. It feels better this morning than it did Friday morning after the initial injury.

Note
(rest day)

Went to the Y only to find out that the pool is closed for "maintenance". The woman at the desk said the first she heard of it was when she arrived at 5:30 a.m. Had no other clothes, so it's a rest day or rest morning - depending upon whether or not there is handball tonight.

Handball 30:00 [2]

A disastrous outing. I got there late and did not stretch enough. I was playing two novices - experienced and one not so - and thought I could ease in to it.

First game at 8-4-2, I pulled my right calf. I thought that I could baby it, but ended up losing 14-15-6. Second game I was down 2-11-12 before a flurry of good serves (i.e. non-running points) brought me to 9-13-15. Then I wisely limped out of there. It's real sore now and I think I'll be taking the weekend off to rest it...

Cardio (Elliptical) 25:00 [3]

Random @ 17

Weights 13:00 [3]

Short set to ensure I was in my office before the simulated lockdown today...

Swimming 33:18 [2] 1.0 mi (33:18 / mi)

Pool felt warm when I got in, but I was able to keep moving. Wall clock said 3418, not 3318, but I trust the stop watch. This confirms my belief about the loose minute hand on the wall clock. (Thursday's swim had the wall clock giving me a better time by a minute than the watch.)

Watercize 52:00 intensity: (17:00 @1) + (35:00 @2)

Beware when the instructors says, "Mellow workout today; oh, wait, I found a different one..."

Cardio (Bike) 22:00 [3]

Random @ 17; did pretty well considering how I felt...

Weights 22:00 [3]

Shorter sets as we were running late...

Running 38:27 [3] 4.1 mi (9:23 / mi) +90m 8:47 / mi

Another run through Jamestown, this time early in the morning as Sarah's team had to work the first game before resting during the second and playing for the first time in the third round. Across the gorge on 3rd street and then to the top of the hill on Chappaqua St, back down the hill on Forest and Prospect, over the Main St. bridge and back to the ice arena.

Sarah's team did well until the finals in the gold bracket when, for the first time this season, they faced a team that was clearly better than them. All but two of the girls went all "deer in the headlights" and they lost badly. Happily, Sarah was one of the ones who wasn't intimidated at all, but it didn't matter in the end.

Running 50:15 [3] 5.7 mi (8:49 / mi) +70m 8:30 / mi

A "Mike Lyons" inspired run. About an hour while Sarah's volleyball team had some down time during their tournament in Jamestown. Weather was nice and I went from the Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena out and around the three Southwestern Schools (Middle, High, and Elementary) then back.

Sarah's team did well winning all ten sets they played. Their only tough match was the first one. They trailed 24-25 before effecting a very unusual "comeback" and winning 25-22. (Yes, I checked the typing there; bonus points to whomever can figure out what happened - needless to say, there were a lot of surprised folks.) After that, the other team was understandably deflated and dropped the second set 25-17. The rest of the day was boring and they have already qualified for the Gold Bracket where they will probably face Pittsburgh Magic in the finals.

Racquetball 40:00 [2]

Payne

15-8; trailed 7-5
15-9; trailed 6-1
6-11; was a bit complacent as Phil alternately shot "random winners" and then followed it up by a well-placed kill shot as I set him up.

Swimming 20:51 [2] 1.0 km (20:51 / km)

Middlin' health, middlin' effort, middlin' time

Watercize 52:00 [1]

Only four people until the last five minutes when class size jumped to six. Now that's late arrivals.

Note
(rest day)

I've been fighting this low-grade infection for a week now. I learned from Bash and dcady not to click the check-box to the left of "Rest day?" because it is a way to engender and prolong an illness. So, I am in denial, but taking the day off anyway.

Cardio (Bike) 25:00 [3]

Random @ 15

Not pushing it; still feeling the effects of yesterday, albeit less in the legs than in the "system".

Running 2:07:18 [3] 13.1 mi (9:43 / mi) +65m 9:34 / mi

Polar Bear Series Half Marathon 48F

Prep for this race was poor. I was tired and fighting a low-grade infection all week. Slept 9.5 hours Friday night, napped for 4 more on Saturday and slept 8.5 Saturday night. Having been very hungry at the end of the 10-mile, I ate a bit more than I should have in the morning and then erred by wearing a long-sleeve shirt. Almost everyone overdressed as the course seemed a good bit warmer than advertised. (Given sunny skies and dry pavement, this shouldn't really be a surprise.)

Went out a bit too fast, but that turned out not to matter as my main problem was overheating. I got passed by Patty Lyons at 2 miles, but unlike other races, I kept getting passed by more and more folks as the day went on. Was about 1.5 minutes behind Jim Miller at the turnaround and he said he was walk/running - he ended up beating me by six minutes, a testimony to my fade. Was about 1.5 minutes ahead of Walt Lyons; he blew by me just before the 10-mile mark.

Splits mimicked what I wish the stock market would do for my retirement:

8:27, 8:53, 9:12, 9:25, 9:19, 9:22, 9:35, 10:03, 10:09, 10:26, 10:30, 10:37, 10:18 (adjusted for the extra 0.1).

My goals before the race were to break 2 hours and to run every step. Obviously the first one missed, but I managed the second one although one can debate the meaning of "run" at at 10:37 pace.

Running 15:00 [1] 1.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

Warm up/cool down for the race.

Racquetball 38:00 [2]

Payne

15-7, an epic battle despite the score; after ten minutes, I was down 5-2; after that it was still close, but he could (almost) never put together two in a row.
15-1
11-8, a good game. At 10-7, I served my first "ace" of the day, but he returned it while prone on the floor and I couldn't play the really odd carom. I thought it was an omen, but I survived.

Field Checking 1:20:00 [1] 2.7 mi (29:38 / mi) +80m 27:08 / mi

Field checking the course (and dead ends) for the Pfiefer Nature Center Walk/Run in June. Trails were pretty clear and mostly not very muddy. We had a chauffeur so we able to attack two different sections without having to worry about long road legs between them This (combined with work earlier on the 5km course) let us cover most of the 10 mile and 10 km courses in less than three miles.

Watercize 51:00 [1]

Late start, exhaustion, and low-grade infection battle kept me out of the lap lanes today. Even watercise was a challenge...

Walking/Hiking 37:00 [1] 2.3 mi (16:05 / mi)

Unexpected commute home.

Running 46:15 [3] 4.75 mi (9:44 / mi) +75m 9:17 / mi

Again in Chattanooga, with Fran. We had some fits and starts near the riverwalk and did actually encounter some traffic, but it was nice...

Running 39:45 [3] 4.3 mi (9:15 / mi) +60m 8:52 / mi

In Chattanooga, TN. Hotel to river and across, around Coolige Park and back through town. What a joy to run in the "warm".

Tuesday Mar 3, 2009 #

Swimming 20:07 [2] 1.0 km (20:07 / km)

Woke up late, felt logy, and the pool was warm. So, I tried to push it for my shorter distance and apparently it worked.

Watercize 52:00 intensity: (35:00 @1) + (17:00 @2)

Handball 55:00 [2]

Brief warm-up at singles as it looked like the third guy wouldn't show. (4-4).

Then cutthroat with the slow, talented player and an experienced guy who is just starting to come on after years of refusing to use his left hand...

15-7-6 (trailed 1-3-5)
15-4-1
15-12-9 (led 12-4-7)
21-4-12

Matches were closer than the score looks, but I racked up points when they couldn't return my soft (junk) serves.
