Got on the bad bike and it was over before it started. Ghost had opened up a 1 second lead after 0.1 miles and it only grew from there. Ultimately, could only muster a "third" for the Y for the season and a personal worst by thirty-one seconds. Top 20% overall and age group. Still third all-time at the Y (out of fifty-nine) by twenty-eight seconds , but this ride would only have been eighth. P:206; C:58.

Catacombs course.

A PR was in the cards as it was my first time on the course! My real goal was to take the local 'season championship' by breaking 11:29. Since the course goes through a valley, ending on an uphill, it was tough to know if I was on pace or not until the last half mile or so. Top 5% overall and age group. I took the all-time record at the Y (out of five) by fourteen seconds. [Interestingly, there is no all-time list at the Y for this (new) ride; I had to combine the two seasonal lists to effectively create this ranking.] P:247; C:58.

Opened up a few seconds on my ghost, but he caught me near the top of the (first) hill. I pushed it back to a three-second gap and got it up to five seconds near the end before beating him by four. For the first time in almost a year, I got the "bad" bike and had to work my buns off just to get a poor (by time) workout in. Rode harder than yesterday, but my pace was worse even though the course was nearly absolutely flat. Logged my worst time ever on the course. Top 10% overall; top 15% age group - missed top 10% by five seconds. Still hold the all-time record at the Y (out of fifty-seven folks) by two seconds, but this ride would have been seventh. Monkey Pass course

So, last week, I thought that I had only Basic rides to go to finish my yearly challenge. There are 14 such rides and my status said "14 to go". BUT, the new ride doesn't count and I was missing a longer one - that I had "skipped" around the time of my vacation. So...

Fell behind my ghost pretty early and wasn't even pacing well to the seasonal record at the Y (held by someone of about my caliber.) Was trailing by 13 seconds after 1.5 miles which wasn't going to make either goal. BUT, I kept pushing and began to reel him in (to my great surprise.) Caught him 0.5 miles before the top of the hill and opened up a lead that grew to ten seconds before it faded to eight. Top 10% overall and age group. Still second all-time at the Y (out of nineteen) but now by twelve seconds. P:236; C:57.

Map Hike at Knox Farm.

As I headed to my first control (#12), I decided to "assess" the semi-open fields to plan for the rest of the day. Lesson: skip anything which isn't "mowed-equivalent". Then, when I got there, I couldn't find the control at all. After that, it was all smooth sailing, although I stepped in a hole going to #7.
(Also, my feet got wet everywhere I went. I had no recollection of Knox being quite that wet.)

Technical handicap of four controls; vision handicap of a light that was really only useful for map reading; physical handicap of my knee injury.

Ran B-A-D-C for the outer controls, then veered off a bit heading to #2. Lost a small amount of time checking for alternate locations at the missing #4, and was otherwise surprised that I could jog (almost) the entire course. Finished dead center of the pack....

Led my ghost until he blew by me near the top of the hill nearly instantly opening up a ten second lead that ultimately swelled to twenty-eight seconds. (I was tired from a sleep-deprived night courtesy of a dead tree falling on the house at 12:30 a.m.) Top 10% overall; top 5% age group. Still second all-time at the Y (out of thirty-one by fifty one) seconds, although this ride would have been third. P:233; C: 55.
