Raid the Hammer (team name: Heading Yeast) with my daughter Sarah and a fellow pastry-chef friend Grace - both rookies.

We made it through the muddy sprint and headed to the Cat In-Cat Out where Grace got a taste of thick woods for the first time. It went fairly well and we headed to the matrix with the girls going for 'c' and 'd' while I went for the other two. I bobbled and ultimately met them on the road with tales of Grace having gone in to thigh-deep water to get 'd'; spirits were high nonetheless. After a bit of conversation, the girls wanted the Bermuda Triangle so that they could say they did a "double-black diamond" even though it was worth only 50 points (what was the thinking behind that - it was just too short?) We made it to B3 only to find two (then three) other teams claiming it was B2. Yelling "Check the numbers! Check the numbers carefully!" we finished this section quite cleanly. Took a long slog to the other map and made our only real error going for 'b' in the "blue square triplet" [Came out, crossed the road and turned west instead of east when the flag wasn't at the first cliff; lost 2-3 minutes.] Time was low and ankles were sore, so we bagged the second triplet, got #3, and #4 and went for the bonus controls (see comment on Bash's log) before finishing. Girls slept the whole way home after we cleared customs, but later said that it was a great race!

Note

Grace, who had never done any orienteering before, commented that of all the things that most surprised her, the kindness, encouragement, support and general friendliness of the other competitors - especially the truly 'competitive ones' - was at the top of the list. She said that the attitude of the other racers made the race much more fun - more so than the road races (which are also much shorter) that she runs. Shout out to all involved for creating such a great atmosphere!

P.S. I will say that while I am no longer surprised by this behavior, it is one reason that I keep coming back as often as my schedule will permit!

First (out of eighteen) all-time at the Y (by twenty-six seconds. Had been tied for second) P:239; C:58.

Wicked Workout. Wanted "under 30" but was hoping for a PR. Was within one second (usually ahead) of my ghost for the first third of the course, but then opened up more distance. Ultimately beat the old PR by seventeen seconds. Top 10% overall; top 15% age group. Still second all-time (out of seventeen) at the Y (by seventy-seven seconds.) P:226; C:59.

Fourth (out of sixteen) all-time at the Y (by 87 seconds; nineteen shy of second). P:215; C:58

Fun "Adventure Run" style event after annual meeting of BFLO at Emery Park. 24 "controls" on a 1:7500 map with no flags, but a multiple-choice question at each location. Two of us had to "file a protest" when we got #7 wrong; fortunately that was the one closest to the start and the protest committee (the two protestors plus one of the course setters) ruled in our favor. That playground platform does have only three levels, not four! (Two of the platforms are at the same level, so that's three levels!) Good time had by all out on the course, though.

Rough Rider course. Got beaten to the good bike by about ten seconds, so there was no chance for a PR. Goal was to break 30 which was likely to happen and then to break last year's time (also on the bad bike), but I couldn't recall it and forgot to look when I started. Ultimately missed the second goal by five seconds that probably could have been eked out. Top 20% overall ; top 25% age group. Still third of sixteen all-time at the Y (by 15 seconds) but this ride would have been fourth. P:203; C:56.

Monkey Pass course. Three goals were under 35 (assumed), under 30 (hoped for) and under 29:03 (new PR), but I got the bad bike which I still say is 10% slower than the good one. Top two goals were dead in the water from the moment I started. I only held off my ghost for the first (flat) third of a mile. I made the top of the hill nearly on pace and cruised downhill to the finish, but I was still 10% off my PR. Top 50% overall and age group. My PR is still good for second all-time at the Y (by twenty seconds, out of nineteen) but this ride would only have been tenth. P:183; C:59. [And, yeah, I think the power reading is off, too.]

Outlaw Rock course. Preliminary goals were 37:53 (seasonal record at the Y) and 35:00 (round number) but the real goal was a PR (33:36). I got a bit ahead of my ghost at first, but he caught me at the 2 mile mark, spurring a bit of a push. I then opened up on him slowly the rest of the way. Top 15% overall and age group; only fifth (out of eighteen) all-time at the Y, less than a minute out of second, but almost three minutes from the lead. P:221; C:57.
