Coastal Run course

Got the bad bike again. Knew that I could break fifteen minutes, but probably not ten. PR was 9:50, but last year's ride was 10:25. Then I saw that the season leader's time was 10:19 and I really decided to shoot for that. Once it became clear that I could beat it, I pushed for under ten minutes and made it. Given that I was on the bad bike, being only eight seconds off my PR is probably my best ride ever. Top 10% overall; top 15% age group (need six seconds to make it top 10%.) Still 3rd (out of 55) at the Y by ten and twelve seconds. (Might have to go for the Y record on this course after my annual challenge is complete.) P:235; C:56.

Got the slow bike so it was a challenge just to make it through; knew that my PR (12:01) was out of reach, but wanted the local lead. Top 15% overall; top 25% age group. Still 1st all time at the Y (out of 44), by thirteen seconds. This ride would have been 4th all-time if my earlier results were removed. P:236; C:61.

Letchworth West

Quite a different course and quite a different result. I blew two controls badly, including #3 (still not sure how - after finding it, I swear I'd been standing there earlier) and #11 (overshot when I interpreted overgrown yellow as green). Winsplits says I was slow to #10 also, but I don't get that one. Combined finish for the two days was 8th out of 14 so I missed my usual goal of "top half" by a distressingly small amount.

Control pickup - more controls in a more compact area. I'd crossed this area twice earlier and also in a meet years ago, but had never been through it in this direction, so the pickup was unfamiliar and more fun.

Letchworth East

For the second time in a row, I had a course with mostly even legs, so I decided to try for 7 min/leg as a target pace. Drifted high on #2, but relocated and lost minimal time. Then did well until #12 when I cut in one stream too early; I realized it almost immediately, but paid the price by slowly crossing a wet seep. Blew #13 by drifting to another control. Blew #14 by being slow and coming out in the wrong part of the field. Still, all in all, a decent run.

BFLO Camp Schoelkopf Sprint

Solid run. Took the popular, but unmapped trail from 2 to 3. Took the unmapped trail from the clearing to the road from 5 to 6 for a slight bobble. Took trails all the way to 7 (which might have been optimal.) Went via the dike to 8 and it was straightforward after that.

4th overall. Tom won in 18:19. Dave Cady (19:55) also beat me.

BFLO Camp Schoelkopf Red Course

Quickly noticed that the course was fourteen legs of roughly equal distance and set my goal of 5 min/leg and was never more than 2.5 minutes off that until the very finish. Probably cut in a bit soon to #1, was a bit sloppy to #4 and drifted right to #11, ultimately hitting the band of yellow to the right, but there were no real goofs. The GO control was common with the sprint and I was only 3 seconds slower than my earlier run. All in all, I'll take it. Tom won in 54:18, but I came in third and no one else broke 60, so...

Schoelkopf control pickup.

Got #1-3 on the Red, plus a nearby Orange control. Tom W. gave me a ride down the road to the parking lot near #1. It was a 45 second walk to the control. (That was probably the winning route choice.) It was interesting to see that my times to #2 and #3 walking when I could recognize my route, weren't all that far off from my original running times. Of course, herd paths helped.

Wanted to beat my PR so I tried to get a lead on my ghost and slowly open it up. Near the end, I made a half-hearted effort at breaking 12 minutes, but slacked off once I missed, probably costing myself two seconds. Top 5% overall; top 10% age group (missed top 5% by seven seconds); #1 all-time at the Y (out of 45), doubling my margin over #2 to 41 seconds. P:267; C:59
