Orienteering 2:00:30 [1]

Control pickup from EAR.

Parked off the map and headed in from behind Ellicottville School - a new location for me. On the way to my first one, I realized I had no map (I started with the bikers map that included the parking lot); 200 m back, I found my map - I had dropped it in the woods, bad omen! It took me surprisingly long to locate myself on the new map and I was almost 45 minutes to my first one. I took an overly ambitious route up the mountain and bypassed my second planned control to get the one on the ski slope. Third and fourth were clean and efficient. For the fifth, I ended up too confused in the stream system and had to bail, but not before dropping my compass in the middle of nowhere. Despite no compass - and in one case attacking from a side I had never been on - I spiked the last two and headed out, but couldn't quite beat my goal of two hours.

Orienteering 16:20 [1]

Drove to the top of the hill to try a different attack at the one I missed (with a spare compass). Spiked it and got the heck out of there before I died of embarrassment.

Orienteering 45:00 [2]

Control placement for Ellicottville Adventure Run. Sadly, after having run out to #100 and back, I was asked if I could fill the water stop (at 100). I wasn't thrilled about carrying 5 gallons out there, but was told that I could drive the ski area roads and would only have to carry them fifty yards. Wait! This couldn't have been coordinated with control placement?!?!?

Orienteering race 3:20 [3]

Quick dash out with a "clean" dibbler to #96 and back. We were trying to outsmart the event software to correct a runners score; we finally did succeed!

Orienteering 2:15:00 [1]

Control placement for Ellicottville Adventure Run. Was able to take trails for all but about 0.5 km so it was really mostly a nice hike on a gorgeous day (except for the climb to the summits of Mardi Gras and Cindy's chair lifts).

Biking 37:00 [2] 8.0 mi (4:37 / mi)

One full loop and one campus loop of the Allegheny River Trail to get back two minutes before office hours began. (I hate lunch time meetings that interfere with going out of doors.)

One lap of the Allegheny River Trail. It was cold and windy and we decided to go grocery shopping instead of doing a second lap.

ROC event at Letchworth East

Went out well to #1, but did a 90 leaving and blew #2. #3-#5 were clean, but I got pulled left to #6. #7-#9 were clean, but I went through the circle at #10 and overshot. The last ten (including finish) were clean although I was a bit sloppy at #11 and too slow throughout.

No real idea how I did. I was 3rd of 3 finishers when I left, but there were many folks in the woods. Doubt I broke the top half, though. Can't choke on three controls like that...

Late edit: Win-splits says I lost ten minutes, almost all on #2 and #10 with no error at all on #6. I also came in 4th out of 11 finishers with 3 DNFs. So much for my own analysis.

...and the Y reopens... Studio floor is so clean and refinished that it looks like a new floor. On the other hand, lockers were removed from the Men's locker room and not reinstalled so it's off to the Boys' locker room until the new lockers go in... Damn those short showers and small lockers...

Field Checking 2:01:32 [1]

More Ellicottville Adventure Run vetting... More or less cleared the beginners course in only 93 extra seconds while walking and periodically retracing steps due to the need to verify control sites and (in one case) choose one from a group of five.

Compost work... Just beat the heat. It was cool when I walked out, and I worked in the shade, but it was starting to get steamy when I walked back to the garage through the sun...

Vetting for the Ellicotville Adventure Run

Tried to start early before the heat - and to arrange that my steepest climbs were relatively early. Spiked all but two - one was a bad route choice that dropped me off "not where I thought I was". The other was a trail junction in an area with many new trails. Those new trails aren't all yet mapped, but they will be! Near the end, I decided to go for an "optional" control that I could have skipped. On the way back to the car, I noticed all sorts of folks swimming in the pond at the top of Holiday Valley. So, one quick attack for the last one and then into the pond! Yeah for the karma of finding the swimming opportunity as a reward for the extra control!

Swimming 1:00 [1]

Okay - one minute of swimming and ten minutes of enjoying the cooling water and watching the kids get tossed into the air by their fathers/uncles.
