Hiking throughout Nine Mile Creek State Forrest with the colonel from the local ROTC battalion while various cadets worked their way through a winter land nav exercise. We'd speak to each cadet (or group of cadets) when we came across them. Most were pretty impressive and none seemed to be fazed by the weather at all. Pretty impressive.

Gut Buster course

After cramping yesterday, I hoped only to break 40 minutes today with a PR (36:54) being a dream goal. Was passed by my ghost after only 0.6 miles. I was still within a minute at 9 miles but he opened up a bit more before I closed some at the end. All things considered, I am reasonably pleased with the ride. Missed top 20% overall by four seconds; top 25% age group. Still fourth all-time at the Y (by almost four minutes, out of thirteen). P:210; C:58.

Lost Valley

After a week off due to illness and recovery, I was hurting. I was hoping to break 40 minutes with the stretch goal of a PR (38:39). I felt weak, but worked hard to keep ahead of my ghost. I had about twenty seconds on him until the cramps started. With 1.2 miles to go, I had them in both legs and I lost a lot of time, including getting passed by the ghost in the last mile. Top 20% overall; top 25% age group. Still first all-time at the Y by 17 seconds. Note: today would have been second by one second; I would have hated myself. P:222; C:56.

Ocean Plunge - first ride ever on a new (this week?) course. Was guaranteed to set a PR and the all-time Y record - as well as turn in my worst performances ever on the same metrics - but was really shooting for under 40 minutes. The distance said it was doable, but the hills were quite steep and I was working hard the entire time to make the goal. Wasn't real confident until the last half to three-quarters of a mile. Top 15% overall; one position off top 15% age group; and, of course, one and only all-time at the Y - although the website says I am not on the all-time leader board despite recognizing that I am on the Winter 2017 leader board. Odd. P:223; C:61.
