orienteering 1:10:47 [4] 8.5 km (8:20 / km) +225m 7:21 / km

Yorkshire Champs, Hawkswick Clowder.

Tired but much happier than yesterday, managed to keep running reasonably strongly. Lost 45 seconds at #8, came down the craggy slope too far left and made the knolls in front of me fit. I should have checked the slope when I crossed it to see where I was. Went right, the long way round, for #10, like most other people. Mark Seddon punched #9 just in front of me and then stood still. I had already worked it out so got a few metres on him. He soon passed me and gradually pulled away but he took less than a minute out of me on the whole leg - much better than yesterday.

13 minutes behind Andy Thorpe, 9 behind Charlie.

orienteering race 1:22:03 [4] 9.6 km (8:33 / km) +270m 7:30 / km

Northern Champs, Monk's Road (north of Malham Tarn), M45L. Feeling fairly tired before I started after a week of fretting about entries and an hour and a half on car park duty. Lost 45 seconds at number 1 (wasn't sure where I was, saw a control in a reentrant that wasn't mine, too high, worked it out quite quickly). From there to number 6 I was chasing RashRouteRicky - I could see him climbing the other side every time we crossed a valley, but he seemed to be getting further away. I was trying to push to catch him but nothing was happening. Dom Dakin overtook me, then Pippa Dakin overtook me, then Mark Seddon overtook me and disappeared ahead of me immediately. After #6 Ricky disappeared and I settled down to just trying to finish at a more comfortable pace. It was a slog, but I got there without any more mistakes.

17 minutes behind Andy Thorpe, 13 behind Charlie.

A frustrating run to Adel Crag. First of all held up for about 45 seconds at the Ring Road which is always a lottery. Then held up by an Alsatian which jumped up at me very time I moved away from it. The owner flapped ineffectually nearby. Eventually he did manage to grab onto it, I ran off and in about 200 metres the dog was on my heels jumping up at me again. I sent it back, it did it again, I sent it back and that was the last I saw of it. It was, as the owner pointed out, quite a soft dog and not in the least bit scary, but it was still big and in my way.

After that I took a few minutes to get going again, then speeded up considerably on the way home to get the time back close to last week's.

running 44:18 [2] 3.6 mi (12:18 / mi)

Bywater, coming back through the Hollies, with Tasha. Very slow because she can't run and talk at the same time, and she is prioritising the wrong one.

7 arches. Had to concentrate to keep the speed up, I kept drifting off.
