orienteering race 40:55 [4] 4.2 km (9:45 / km) +300m 7:11 / km

YHOA middle distance champs, Knapton, Brown course. Enjoyable course in a pleasant if slightly vertical area with a bit of contour detail. Felt laboured running and particularly struggled uphill. Caught by Karl Marshall on a big climb about half way round. He was making enough mistakes for me to get briefly back ahead but he left me behind again on the last big climb. He did 38:33 so must have started less than 2 minutes behind me. Charlotte Ward also beat me, 37:20. I was about the same time behind her in the prologue last week, so I will regard this as progress.

It was a bit annoying at the start. I wanted to start on my start time and go through the full pre-start procedure but they were trying to persuade me to just punch and go. What is the point of allocating start times if they just ignore them. It shouldn't really have been a championship - hardly anybody there.

7% climb - no wonder I was struggling.

Stepping Stones. Sore legs, tight chest and laboured breathing.

Note

Walking - Grand day out in the Lake District. From Lanthwaite Green (Crummock Water) - Whiteside, Hopegill Head, Crag Hill, Sail, Ard Crags, Knott Rigg, Newlands Hause, Robinson, Hindscarth, Dale Head, Honister, Fleetwith Pike, Haystacks, High Pike, High Stile, Red Pike, Scale Force and back around the bottom of Crummock Water. I decided against including Mellbreak at the end, running out of time and very tired.

Legs were still suffering from the day before and it was hard work from the start. Straight into the cloud to start with but it cleared up around Crag Hill and was mostly sunny for the rest of the day, apart from the tops of the highest hills and the occasional snow shower.

23 miles, 2700m of climb, 10.5 hours

hill running 2:06:00 [3] 8.0 mi (15:45 / mi) +800m 12:01 / mi

Beda Fell, Angle Tarn Pikes and Place Fell from Martindale Church. Started nice and steady and went up Beda Fell and Angle Tarn Pikes without any problems, then on the climb of Place Fell my legs just seized up. Walked about half the climb, then trundled off downhill feeling fairly sore. I cut across the ridge of Beda Fell to avoid a bit of road at the end and had to walk all the way up, then walked up the road to get back to the church . Very sore, cannot cope.
