orienteering race 1:34:00 [3] 11.0 km (8:33 / km)

Aire Valley long-o. I went along to help at the start, and thought I would have a go at the shortest long course (10.5k) but they had sold out, so I did the longest instead. I chugged along slowly, a bit tired but not feeling too bad, and deliberately walking all the hills, until I conked out at Esholt Village. Then I walked along the river to the drinks point at the west end of Buck Wood, then jogged along the towpath back to Saltaire.

Not really prepared for a long course, didn't have any means of carrying drink. I would have been just about ok on the 10.5k course. Long would have been 21k if I had finished.

running 1:03:30 [3] 7.0 mi (9:04 / mi)
ahr:182

Butcher Hill, Newlay, Kirkstall. HR was still all over the place but I was able to be a bit more positive without being too uncomfortable. I was reasonably quick as far as Newlay Locks (30 minutes) but struggled a bit from there, particularly up the hill from Kirkstall. Hot.

running 31:30 [2] 3.0 mi (10:30 / mi)

Stepping stones, a little quicker and a little better, but still random HR.

running 34:00 [1] 3.0 mi (11:20 / mi)
ahr:149 max:176

Stepping stones, again. I keep expecting a miracle. Today was slightly better. Progress? Nah.

There is a switch in my heart. When I manage to switch it I will be able to cruise round this in about 25 minutes with a HR below 150.

running 34:20 [1] 3.0 mi (11:27 / mi)
ahr:152 max:194

Stepping stones, more of the same. Actually a bit different - rather than randomly going up and down all over the place, my heart rate stuck at 156 for about the first 10 minutes - downhill or uphill made no difference, tried going slower and slower and that made no difference, until I was down to below walking speed. Then it went up on the big hill and was back to normal randomness after that. Probably just my HRM playing up.

running 34:00 [1] 3.0 mi (11:20 / mi)
ahr:150

Stepping stones, same deal as yesterday, just trying to keep the HR down. It was easier than yesterday, not as stiff, but the HR was more erratic. It settled down a bit after the climb at the far end, and the highest HR was lower than yesterday, 182, and the average HR was marginally lower. I don't think I can really call it progress though. I could nearly walk it at this speed.

Cold still lingering.

running 34:00 [2] 3.0 mi (11:20 / mi)
ahr:151

Stepping stones. Very gentle jogging trying really hard to keep the HR down below 150 but it still went > 190 on the steeper hills. Legs were sore from yesterday - too much time with no running - but otherwise reasonably comfortable.
