running 40:00 [4] 3.0 mi (13:20 / mi)

Round the Hollies and Meanwood with Evie. I've been trying to persuade her that she needs to do something other than steady running if she wants to get faster, so we went to do some tempo work in the Hollies. My idea was that we would do a longer hilly loop, but I set off too fast and Evie exploded on the first big climb. She took a while to recover and then we did the climb again at a slightly slower but still quite quick pace, then jogged home. She did well to have another go because she was not happy at all after the first effort.

It's about a 4 minute climb in in 3 sections with flat bits in between.

running 40:00 [2] 3.3 mi (12:07 / mi)

Verrrry slow to Bywater with Tasha

Tuesday Mar 28, 2017 #

running 37:26 [5] 4.7 mi (7:58 / mi)

Bit of an effort to seven arches. I was a bit heavy legged and it felt slow but it wasn't.

orienteering race 1:12:25 [5] 9.9 km (7:19 / km) +360m 6:11 / km

Midland Champs, Bentley Woods. Lovely sunny day, nice woods, mostly fairly easy orienteering. I might have been the only person to go right of the lake on number 3 but I don't think it cost me anything. Some people were faster than me, but they would have been anyway. I was also fairly happy with my line on the long leg to #9. Other than that, maybe a 5 second hesitation at #8 when I was dead on line and 20 metres short and couldn't see it, then a similar hesitation at #23 when I was looking for a depression and all I could see was a thicket. Should have read all the way to the end of the control descriptions. So I don't really think I could have gone much faster and I felt I was running pretty well. I lost a few places after the second road crossing, when we were just running through fields mostly.

6th on M45, 3 minutes down on Daniel Gooch, 2 down on Andy Thorpe, Ifor, Rich Barrett and Al Landels.

I was also behind 7 M50s, Charlie fastest with 64.

running 36:00 [3] 3.3 mi (10:55 / mi)

Jog up to Meanwood Park Hospital, then a fast mile lap (6:40) and jog back. A bit chilly.

running 41:43 [3] 4.7 mi (8:53 / mi)

Spen Lane and Adel

Tuesday Mar 21, 2017 #

Terrain running 35:00 [4] 3.5 mi (10:00 / mi)

Terrain intervals, Castle Hills. Better than last time, maybe because I had a better idea of where I was going. 3:34, 4:13, 3:31, 4:28. A bit slow on the last one, not helped by face planting with 100m to go.

Monday Mar 20, 2017 #

running 29:45 [3] 3.3 mi (9:01 / mi)

Parkside and Weetwood with Evie. Reasonable pace. Unreasonable weather, cold, windy, wet.

Saturday Mar 18, 2017 #

hill running 1:25:30 [5] 8.0 mi (10:41 / mi) +500m 8:57 / mi

Solo effort at the Malhamdale fell race, because a) I was going there anyway to pick up a pillow and b) when I did it at new year I was feeling ill and chaperoning youngsters so was I wanted to try going quicker.

Happy enough with the time. I beat Sarah Pedley. It was much wetter underfoot than at New Year, and quite windy too, big headwind for the last hill. Also climbing Gordale Scar was a bit hairy, not the climb itself but the bit at the top where wading through the raging torrent was required. Fortunately I am hairy enough to match it.

running 46:30 [2] 4.7 mi (9:54 / mi)

Seven Arches. It was dark by the time I finished. Just a very slow plod.

Thursday Mar 16, 2017 #

Note

It started raining and got much colder just as I got home from work. I can't be expected to go out running in those conditions.

Wednesday Mar 15, 2017 #

running 48:43 [3] 5.3 mi (9:11 / mi)

Gledhow Park and Chapel Allerton. Easyish. Lovely evening.

Tuesday Mar 14, 2017 #

running 33:30 [4] 3.4 mi (9:51 / mi)

Weetwood and Lawnswood, with 6x2 mins. Did a longer warm up than normal to avoid congestion. Jogging ladies all over the pavement.

orienteering 1:05:38 [5] 7.4 km (8:52 / km) +250m 7:35 / km

Compass Sport Cup, Cringle and Cold Moors, Short Brown. Very enjoyable but really quite easy romp round the moors. A bit on the physical side, lots of heather, bracken and hills to contend with, but I coped ok. Had a bit of company on the way round from Luke Parker and Alexander Mathers but I got away from both of them in the end. Also saw a lot of Rob Baker who started and finished the same time as me but on the Brown course.

3rd place, 1 minute behind Al Powell and a whopping 14 minutes behind Duncan Archer, who cruised past me about 1/3 of the way round.

Saturday Mar 11, 2017 #

running 35:00 [1] 2.6 mi (13:28 / mi)

Jogging round Meanwood and the Hollies with Tasha. Very very slow.

Friday Mar 10, 2017 #

running 22:00 [5] 2.8 mi (7:51 / mi)

Stepping Stones, big effort. Only 12 seconds slower than my best time last May and tonight was muddy and darkish. Fast to the beck, then lost time getting up the muddy bank up into the Hollies, then fast from there.

Thursday Mar 9, 2017 #

running 49:11 [3] 5.75 mi (8:33 / mi)

Adel Church, moderate pace. Feeling a bit sore after yesterday, both from scratches and from struggling muscles.

Wednesday Mar 8, 2017 #

Terrain running 37:00 [4] 3.1 mi (11:56 / mi)

Terrain intervals at Castle Hills on the way home from work. I last came here 6 years ago, when I said it was a pleasant wood mostly free of undergrowth. Unfortunately the few bramble patches there were then have now expanded to cover half the wood. This meant the direct route I was taking from one end to the other of the wood last time was now a bit painful, and I had to take evasive action. Slow and confused, each leg was different to all the others. Never felt comfortable.

720m downhill 3:47
750m uphill 5:10 (includes getting stuck in the quarry)
730m downhill 3:43
720m uphill 4:37

I'll need to try somewhere different.

orienteering 1:10:00 [3] 6.0 km (11:40 / km)

YHJS training, Tarn Hows.

loop mostly on the fell to the south of the road, going into the woods for the last couple of controls. I was keeping an eye on a couple of the youngest girls but observing from the heights rather than shadowing them.

loop that started on the fell but mostly in the woods south of the road, just by myself and without paths on the map. Good.

control collecting in the woods to the north west of the tarn. Had to jog out onto the fell to sweep up one of the juniors who hadn't actually reached the contols that I was collecting. Started off a bit vaguely but got into it.

Saturday Mar 4, 2017 #

orienteering 1:10:00 [3] 6.0 km (11:40 / km)

YHJS training.

Morning, Holme Fell. Shadowing Euan on an 'Attack Points' course on the fell, then a line by myself in the detailed semi-open woodland. Felt very much in control.

Afternoon, Tarn Hows Wood. Control Pick on a map with paths removed. Very much not in control, just couldn't get to grips with the map at all. I don't think 1:5000 scale was really helping but I was frequently off line and distance judgment was poor.

Thursday Mar 2, 2017 #

running 54:45 [5] 6.8 mi (8:03 / mi) +250m 7:14 / mi

Headingley Hill, Kirkstall Hill and the Normans. Big effort to just beat the time I did a couple of weeks ago. Cold and breezy.

Wednesday Mar 1, 2017 #

running 27:43 [4] 3.2 mi (8:40 / mi)

Weetwood and Lawnswood, 6 x 2 minutes. Flagging a bit but not bad.
