orienteering 1:41:16 [4] 7.0 km (14:28 / km) +340m 11:38 / km

Shamrock day 2, Shrone Hill. A bit of an epic. 14mins/k was actually quite a good result, 8 mins down on Charlie and 6 on Martin. I lost about 6 minutes on #2 but after that I was quite good. #2 was a long leg and about 2/3 of the way along it I got stuck in some crags. I should have read the map and descended out of it but instead I climbed, got stuck on another crag, climbed a bit further. By now I was way off line and also I had lost any sense of how far I had gone. So I stopped, dithered, descended a bit, stopped again, dithered, descended a bit more, and so on until eventually I relocated just above the control. Everybody else just looked where it was relative to the road below it, which would have made life easier. After that Colm O'Halloran caught me. He was running quicker than me but was losing enough time for me to keep with him until the very end, where I lost a couple of minutes on the third last in the forest with a poor route. At that stage I didn't really care too much.

It was so slow because there were no paths, there were many impassable crags, and between the crags was knee deep grass and tussocks.

The weather was nice apart from the odd shower. Just as well really.

orienteering race 44:47 [4] 4.9 km (9:08 / km) +140m 8:00 / km

Shamrock Day 1, Cobdubh. Cloud was down making things a bit tricky. I never felt that I was totally in control but I got round with maybe a minute lost at 3 and a minute and a half at 11 (which was below the cloud level and should have been easy). Happy not to have a disaster like Martin. 9 minutes down on Charlie.

Adel Crag, plodding along. Tired legs but this was easy enough.

hill intervals 5:49 [5] 0.6 mi (9:41 / mi)

Short hills, Carnegie. I have to get better at pacing myself on these. It seems easy until suddenly it seems very hard.

30, 32, 34, 34, 36, 34, 36, 37, 38, 38

Not bad.

Note

Planned to go for a run but my legs were sore from Saturday and I just sat on the sofa all day with Evie.

Sunday May 24, 2015 #

running 39:58 [2] 3.3 mi (12:07 / mi)
ahr:116

Bywater, after a long day loading all of Martha's belongings, driving back to Leeds and unloading them again. Knackered, set off very slow and sort of bonked coming back across the ring road and wobbled home. Shouldn't have bothered really.

hill running 1:47:40 [3] 7.5 mi (14:21 / mi) +800m 10:47 / mi

Aran Fawddwy from Cwm Cywarch. Up via Drysgol, down via the fence leading south west across a bog, then a steep rocky descent beside the stream into Blaencywarch.

Aren't mountains brilliant!

running 39:00 [3] 4.0 mi (9:45 / mi)

Woodhouse Ridge and Sugarwell, feeling a bit heavy-legged. Had a couple of days off mainly due to work issues but I don't feel better for it.

hill running 1:26:00 [3] 7.5 mi (11:28 / mi) +450m 9:40 / mi

Weary run from Bamford up Win Hill, then a loop out below Hope Brink and back along the ridge to Win Hill again, and back to Bamford. Legs sore. Lovely late afternoon sunshine.

running tempo 52:03 [5] 6.5 mi (8:00 / mi)

Adel Crag, trying hard. Still not feeling 100% but this was still my fastest since 2012. Kept the pressure on but it never felt comfortable.

Thursday May 14, 2015 #

running 29:45 [2] 2.5 mi (11:54 / mi)

Park, Meanwood Grove and the Hollies with Tasha. Very slow start, not quite so slow at the end. Too much chat - not from me obviously.

Still not feeling great.

orienteering 45:09 [5] 4.9 km (9:13 / km) +145m 8:02 / km

British Middle champs - Naphill and Park Wood.

Feeling a bit wasted before I started. I had strained myself a bit in the sprint final, and I had not got a very good night's sleep and I was basically tired and grumpy. Coped for about half the course but my running speed was well down on what it should have been. I was making sense of the vegetation most of the time but it couldn't be relied on. Lost a minute at 18 - I thought I knew where I was above the control and came to the earthbank when I wasn't expecting it. Instead of just deciding that I was on the earthbank and hunting for the control I went looking for another earthbank somewhere else. Lost two minutes at 22 - I was looking for the path leading to the control but it wasn't very obvious and I wasn't 100% sure I was even in the right block of forest. Crossed the area twice before following Nigel Bunn into the control. Lost all impetus after that. A disappointing run but I was never in the mood for it.

14th place, 12.5 minutes down on Bill. Would have been lower placed but there were several dodgy DQs.

urban/sprint race 19:20 [5] 3.3 km (5:52 / km)

British Sprint qualifier. Didn't really like the area much - too many similar buildings. I confused myself on 4 - having reversed myself out of 3 I then turned left instead of right and of course the next building along looked the right shape. Found a control, not mine, panicked, worked out what I had done and sprinted back the other way past 3. Maybe 40 seconds lost, and I thought that was my chances of qualifying for the A final gone. Clean enough for the rest of the course. Tried and failed to keep up with Parkino when he came past, then Ifor appeared from nowhere and I stayed with him for a few legs before he disappeared and eventually finished behind me. Turns out Ifor had missed a control out. So had Dave Peel and Kevin Fielding was DQd for crossing the uncrossable, leaving me in 5th and in the A final.

urban/sprint race 16:42 [5] 3.3 km (5:04 / km)

British Sprint champs final - Aldershot Barracks.

My aim for the day had been to make the A final, but having been a bit lucky with my qualification I really wanted to make this a good result. Three mistakes - on 7 I went right which I think was ok but I hadn't worked out the end of the leg and nearly got caught in some hedges and had to do some extra weaving around - maybe 15 seconds lost. Number 12 I didn't see that there was a gap in the uncrossable fence so reversed out and went up the road - another 15 seconds. Number 15 I went right instead of left - slightly longer but I only saw the route that I had already taken up the hill. Can't have been more than 10 seconds. 12th place which I am very pleased with.

Short hills, Carnegie

39, 38, 36, 36, 36, 35, 36, 37, 39, 38

I had put a lot of effort into running away from that man yesterday, and it was also a bit slippy underfoot so I was a bit slow today.

hill running 1:16:43 [4] 7.8 mi (9:50 / mi) +300m 8:47 / mi

Dearncomb Beck, Round Hill, Lippersley Pike. Same run I have done a few times over the last 1.5 years but this time I reversed the direction. Started off not really trying very hard but picked up once the climb up Round Hill started after half an hour or so. Finished quite quickly.

I had a brief encounter with a gentleman who was enjoying the freedom of the hills unencumbered by any clothing on his lower portions. Fortunately I was approaching from the rear so all I saw was a pair of wrinkly white buttocks. He had his shorts in his hand ready to slip them on if he saw anybody coming but my excessive speed took him by surprise, and by the time I reached him he was still panicking with his shorts round his ankles. 'Alright' I said. 'Hiya' he responded cheerfully as I passed him. I didn't look back.

hill running 1:49:30 [3] 9.5 mi (11:32 / mi) +500m 9:54 / mi

From Holmbridge - Digley, Black Hill, Holme Moss, Yateholme, Moss Edge. Same as the run I did with Chas in February, except this time I didn't bring him with me. I was so slow in Feb that I just assumed I would be much quicker, but there wasn't as much difference as I thought. Tired by the end.
