orienteering race 57:00 [4] 5.3 km (10:45 / km) +150m 9:25 / km

White Rose 2. Apart from being pretty tired, felt much better than yesterday. I enjoyed the first bit on the slope, struggled a bit with the climb onto the plateau, then started to find it hard going. I thought I had a much better run but was well beaten by Sarah Noot amongst others.

orienteering race 1:09:00 [3] 6.1 km (11:19 / km) +200m 9:43 / km

White Rose 1 - blue course. Struggled all the way, walked slowly up all the hills, made a 2 minute mistake. Not very happy, but good enough to beat the other M/W40s. Not good enough to beat the M60s though, and nowhere near the M16s.

running 27:00 [3] 3.0 mi (9:00 / mi)

Stepping stones. A bit better than of late, I actually ran all the way. HR not exactly stable but it didn't seem to cause me so much trouble.

Note

went for a walk. didn't feel like it so I couldn't be bothered to go anywhere adventurous. Through the park, Tunnel How Hill, Heads Beck, Roundhay Park, Wyke Beck, Primrose Valley, Temple Newsam, Skelton Lake, along the canal to Fleet Bridge then along the river to Cas. Made a diversion to go and have a closer look at Oddball the walking dragline. 22 miles, 5 hours and 40. Got a very slow bus back from Cas. A bit ropey for the first hour or so but felt ok after that.

running 45 [2] 2.5 mi (18 / mi)

Ran out through the park hoping things would get better. They didn't. Gave up on it at Parkside Road and walked back through the Hollies - beautiful in the sunshine. Then did a sprint up the Donkey Steps and a couple of sprints up Moor Drive - these felt ok. Sometimes the sinus rhythm overrides the false rhythm from the AF if you get it going fast enough, although mostly it doesn't. I've read of other people finding the same thing. I can't sprint everywhere though, and afterwards it didn't exactly settle down.

running 34:00 [2] 3.5 mi (9:43 / mi)

A bit better today - heart rate high but it never felt like it was misfiring. Just about beat 10 minute miles, woohoo.

Monkbridge, through the park, up the ring road, back through the Hollies and along Weetwood Lane.

Note

Feeling a bit perkier today, striding out on the climb to Great Shunner Fell from Hardraw. It really is a very easy climb, but long. Then across to Lovely Seat, followed by a fairly rough descent across the moor towards Sedbusk then back through the fields to Hardraw. 13 miles, 700m climb, 3 hours 45.

Saw some bits of the Wensleydale Triathlon going on (although at the time I wasn't sure what was going on - I could work out that there was a bike race and a hill race going on but it didn't occur to me that they were connected). Saw some very swift cyclists going over the top of the Buttertubs, and some very slow runners (presumably on the half distance course) when I got back to Hardraw. The full run goes to the top of Great Shunner Fell, the half only to the intake gate.

Note

Walking - from Cautley Church, both tops of Baugh Fell, Swarth Fell, Wild Boar Fell, across to the Howgills for Randygill Top, Yarlside, the Calf, back down to Cautley over Great Dummacks.

Very hard going, most of the way without paths. I died on the last climb to the Calf (where there is a path), just had enough. Had to have a sit down. I wasn't really feeling great all day.

About 21 miles, 1800m of climb. Lots of climb. About 8.5 hours.

running 20:00 [1] 1.0 mi (20:00 / mi)

Attempted slow jog. Got as far as the park before I decided I was wasting my time and walked back.

Sunday Aug 5, 2012 #

Note

Walk, from Scar House reservoir around the head of Nidderdale. Little Whernside, Great Whernside, Sandy Gate, How Stean Beck then back over In Moor. Found it hard work, uphill was a strain and much of the way is pathless.

The last hour or so was very dramatic with a thunderstorm moving around to the south and east of me, but I was in sunshine. The rain caught up with me for the last twenty minutes.

16 miles in 4.5 hours.

running 50:00 [2] 4.0 mi (12:30 / mi)

Another expedition to find the pink trig point, this time armed with better information. Success, but I'm not surprised I didn't find it last time, surrounded as it is by nettles and brambles and hidden in head high bracken. I must have been within 30 metres on Thursday but I didn't know it was next to the wall. It would have been easier if the OS had put it on top of the hill, but they didn't.

Runningwise this was pretty dire - heart rate all over the place even when going downhill, without any sign of it settling down.

Caught in a very heavy cloudburst which was quite pleasant really, took my mind off my struggles. Sunny again within 10 minutes.

Wildlife notes : Saw a weasel on Tongue Lane - it nearly ran under my feet, panicked and continued to try to run under my feet for several yards.
Saw a dead deer next to the ring road - I was shuffling along looking at my feet trying desperately to keep moving then suddenly there was a dead deer next to my feet, looking up at me. Made me jump.

running 51:00 [2] 4.5 mi (11:20 / mi)

very gentle run trying not to provoke my heart problems. Just about ok - i wasn't very comfortable but it was nice to be out. Meandered round the Hollies then headed up to Tunnel How Hill to look for the pink trig point, but I couldn't find it. I'll have to come back in the winter. Then back down Church Lane.
