orienteering race 50:04 [5] 4.5 km (11:08 / km) +245m 8:45 / km

SinS - Middle Race Bringewood. A few AF problems on and off, couldn’t get up hills and made route choice accordingly. One or two controls were a bit dodgy but I really enjoyed it - lots of legs < 1 minute one after the other keeping you on your toes. The forest was a bit more pleasant and runnable today.

orienteering race 1:23:51 [5] 8.2 km (10:14 / km) +320m 8:33 / km

SinS High Vinnals. We somehow managed to be almost late for the start despite having all morning to get ready. Still a bit flustered in the start box, didn't have any chance to look at the map in the start lane, set off with the map back to front and turned right instead of left at the start kite. Then I couldn't find the control anyway. I was within yards of it (a platform) but did not see it. Ran to another platform with a control on it, then ran back again. At least 2 minutes lost altogether. The rest of the course was fine and no AF problems, I just got very tired in the last kilometre and slowed right down. Very physical hilly area, route choice was all about avoiding the worst of the vegetation, but the map was not entirely reliable. One route through green turned out to be quite runnable, another through white was thigh deep in brambles. 83:51

orienteering race 1:14:19 [4] 8.6 km (8:38 / km) +410m 6:59 / km

SinS Brampton Bryan - a bit knackered from packing all the camping stuff and driving. AF on the way to number 1 and for the entire course from then on. I wasn't too uncomfortable but just couldn't get up the hills. 74:19 for 8.6 on an easy area, just a bit hilly.10 minutes behind Peter Ward.

running 33:00 [4] 4.3 mi (7:40 / mi)

round West Park Fields, Beckett Park, Batcliffe, at a decent pace. I was short of time a bit.

running tempo 24:29 [5] 3.5 mi (7:00 / mi) +120m 6:19 / mi

Adel Crag - steady out to the ring road, then flat out for the Adel section, then jog back from the ring road. The fast bit was quite fast, I was moving pretty well but tired (very busy couple of days at work including staying up until after midnight keeping an eye on things).

Diverted along the goit on the way back to check on the progress of the new bridge - already finished, and they're making steps up the far bank.

Note

Given the weather we abandoned plans to do Scafell Pike and headed east instead. From Haweswater up Long Stile to High Street, then down via Mardale Ill Bell and Nan Bield. The weather was only really bad for about 20 minutes but that happened to coincide with us being on top of High Street. Driving rain and wind at that altitude was pretty unpleasant, we were both glad to get down out of it. The sun came out again as we passed Small Water.

orienteering race 59:40 [5] 5.1 mi (11:42 / mi) +200m 10:26 / mi

MIddle race - Bigland. Nothing wrong with the heart but plenty wrong with the brain today. Started a bit ragged, probably trying to run a bit too fast. Lost a minute at 2 when I was in the right place running round in circles, then at 8 I confidently ran past the control and two contours down the hill, another minute lost. Then at 12 I confidently ran past the control and 4 contours down the hill - another minute and a half. I just kept thinking I knew what I was doing when I didn't. It didn't help that I had caught Keith Agmen 2 minutes and I thought I ought to be leaving him behind. I never saw him again after 12 and he beat me by 7 minutes in the end. Anyway the final straw was at 16 when I started reading the wrong leg on the map. I realised after only 100 metres or so and I was more or less on line to the control but I just flipped - I didn't have a clue where I was. In retrospect it was obvious but I just made completely the wrong decision and ended up descending loads before I worked out where I was and then struggling back up the hill. After that I had more or less given up, and of course spiked every control.

Very poor.

running 35:00 [4] 4.0 mi (8:45 / mi) +100m 8:07 / mi

A steady run with some faster bits. I actually set off to do the same timed loop of the park that I have done previously but after the first minute I found the bridge over the goit gone. It is in the process of being replaced but there was no way to get across. That threw me. I turned the run into a fartlek session running faster bits as I felt like.

Adel Crag, very tired still. Lots of effort for not much speed.

I didn't see anything of any interest whatsoever.

running 23:00 [3] 2.5 mi (9:12 / mi) +40m 8:46 / mi

Sent out on an errand at 9pm I thought I might as well turn it into a jog as I was feeling quite sprightly. The feeling lasted to about the end of our road, but I was ok considering. No heart issues (now that there is no pressure - it's all in the mind). Pleanty of leg issues, but they felt a bit better as I went on.

Via Susan's house, Brookfield, Tannery, Hustler's Row, Weetwood Mill Lane.

orienteering race 37:23 [5] 4.3 mi (8:42 / mi)

British Relays - Tankersley. Palpitations Saturday evening were quite worrying but they stopped eventually. In the end I didn't really have any trouble today. I was never very fast but I kept the mistakes to a minimum and was 4 minutes off the leaders pace. We were in 5th at the end of my leg but slipped back after that.

orienteering race 1:19:02 [3] 9.6 mi (8:14 / mi) +270m 7:34 / mi

British Champs - Wharncliffe and Greno. Started well - in the lead up to number 6, and lost less time than most in Greno. Heart started wobbling a bit on the long leg to 15, but I was sound round the loop to 19 and still clear in 3rd place at that point. AF started between 18 and 19 as I climbed the hill. I could go on the flat alright but hills were a real struggle. Then I lost 2 mins at 20 - went into the circle with no idea what I was looking for, wandered around for a bit getting further away from the control, then wandered back, all a bit rubbish. I was still 3rd with 2 controls to go but had nothing for the last hill and got overtaken by Jon Cross. Beforehand I would have been very happy with 4th place - in the circumstances it seems like I threw 3rd place away. Last year I was 14th. Apart from 20 I lost 40 secs at 7 looking round the much smaller quarry short of the control, and I started climbing away from the road at the start of leg 15 because I got confused about where I was. I probably lost 27 seconds there.

running tempo 14:01 [5] 2.8 km (5:00 / km) +100m 4:15 / km

Dragged my tired aching body round a fast lap of the park, just to see how unfit I have really got. Surprisingly quite a good time. This means I will have to run on Saturday after all.

I'll have a nice rest tomorrow.

orienteering race 35:50 [4] 4.3 km (8:20 / km) +170m 6:57 / km

Aire "sprint" in Meanwood Park. It was a bit long and a bit rough for a sprint, exacerbated by the surge in the undergrowth in the last 2 weeks. I hope Wharncliffe isn't like this.

I was struggling a bit with the running but ok until I got caught in some windblow/bramble/nettle. The map showed a path but there wasn't one. I should have reversed and gone round like Supersaint did, but instead I ended up trying to cross rotten tree trunks covered in brambles. I could see clear ground in front of me when a bit of tree gave way, I toppled backwards and landed wedged between two trunks with my legs in the air. I must have lost a minute extricating myself. I plodded round the rest of the course but the pulse was wobbly and I had really lost interest.

Now I am sore with minor strains to stomach and shoulder and a graze across my back and I feel really, really old. It's all superficial though.

running 31:00 [4] 3.9 mi (7:57 / mi) +130m 7:12 / mi

Jogged out through Meanwood Park for 10 minutes then sped up to do Adel Crag - not too bad and reasonably quick but still felt stiff and awkward from not enough running. Slowed down again when I got back across the ring road because it was getting a bit like hard work. HR was too high the whole way for the pace, although it is now back to normal 42 when at rest.

Note

Had a long chat with the consultant today about the results of the tests. Basically there is nothing new to worry about, which is good news. He had forgotten he had asked for an MRI until I reminded him. It took about 45 minutes to track the results down and fortunately there is no new damage to the old myocardium and the MRI people don't want to do any more tests on me. That might be a money thing I suppose. There is an issue with a long P-R interval and occasional dropped beats but there isn't any evidence of AV block and the P-R interval came down under exercise as it should, so I don't need a pacemaker just yet.

hill running 49:00 [3] 5.0 mi (9:48 / mi) +300m 8:16 / mi

From the Pedley's to Stoodley Pike with a slightly longer return. Struggled with the initial climb as Mike set the pace, then we both slowed down but I slowed down the most. A struggle from start to finish. Lovely day though, and slightly envious that this is Mike's default run. HR stayed normal throughout (below 150) but it was the legs that were the problem. Just knackered.

running 32:00 [3] 3.5 mi (9:09 / mi)

Along Woodhouse Ridge and back, then through the allotments and up the donkey steps. Resting HR is now down to a more normal mid-50s. Started with ten minutes at 130, 5 minutes at 140, 5 minutes at 150 then jogged the rest. Not too bad, but my legs have turned to mush.

running 30:00 [3] 3.5 mi (8:34 / mi)

HR still too high (resting HR 70+). Went slowly round Beckett Park (HR165 when jogging) and tried a few faster sections to try and force the heart back into rhythm. (Well it works sometimes). The result was sort of promising, with the rate coming down when I was going fast, then going down to normal jogging level 130ish when I slowed down, then jumping up and down and all over the place as I recovered.

orienteering race 25:00 [3] 3.0 km (8:20 / km)

Aire spring sprint at Bramley Fall. I've never orienteered at Bramley Fall before (despite having spent 5 years living a mile away and having run through it hundreds of times). I felt the map didn't really convey the ground shape in the quarried area very well - everything is mapped as a set of individual hills which isn't really how it is on the ground. Anyway, the heart rate is still too high, I jogged/walked round with a HR about 175, and Steve W beat me by 7 minutes. I also nearly missed a control out and had to go back for it, maybe 1.5 minutes lost.

A bit rubbish.

Tuesday May 3, 2011 #

Note

Having trouble with the heart rate. It is regular but too high, resting heart rate about 70, which is very wearing. It should be 40ish. I think I have a mild chest infection, maybe.

Note

Went to Coniston and had breakfast at the top of the road leading to Walna Scar. Then we did Coniston Old Man going up through the mines and down via Goat's Water. Nice, and not too windy apart from the Goat's Water bit. The kids were ok, I think they managed more sleep than we did. Had some trouble with palpitations - from having a cold or lack of sleep or both.
