Terrain running 1:13:40 [4] 7.5 mi (9:49 / mi) +350m 8:35 / mi

This is a run I devised when I mostly trained from my office in the middle of Leeds, designed to maximize the amount of terrain I could get into a lunchtime run. It is as physical as I could make it without being gratuitously unpleasant. Starting the run from home misses out a bit of tarmac and grass running in the centre of town. It is a run that requires strength and aggression. Today I attacked it with feebleness and timidity. I was just being a bit rubbish. Woodhouse Ridge, Scott Hall Woods, Sugarwell Hill, Stainbeck, Carr Manor Fields, Meanwood Hospital Woods, Meanwood, the Hollies, with as much up and down and off-path running as possible.

running long 1:48:00 [4] 13.0 mi (8:18 / mi) +350m 7:40 / mi

Kirkstall Bridge, Calverley Bridge, Hunger Hills, Runway Lights, Oil Mill Beck, Butcher Hill. Tired after a difficult week at work, then Duncan made me stay up til 1am drinking beer and listening to Geography teacher music. Once I got going I was fine though, no trouble with the heart, legs comfortable enough, cruising nicely. Found the hills hard work mind.

running 32:00 [3] 3.5 mi (9:09 / mi) +120m 8:16 / mi
(sick)

Overtired from missing half a nights sleep on Tuesday and still not really recovered. It makes the AF worse and it was going on and off throughout this jog. Legs felt fine, I did a couple of bursts of faster running but couldn't sustain it when the AF kicked in. Parkside, Weetwood.

running tempo 29:48 [5] 4.0 mi (7:27 / mi) +120m 6:49 / mi

Tempo run round Lawnswood. Trying my arse off, not going very fast. Some chest soreness I think from carrying a wardrobe upstairs on Monday. Also a very stressful day at work that continued into the night - firefighting at 1 in the morning.

orienteering race 1:04:47 [5] *** 7.7 km (8:25 / km) +300m 7:03 / km

Stoodley Pike, Brown course. My heart was giving me problems and keeping me awake overnight and I wasn't sure if I was going to run but it settled down eventually and the run was fine. I was a bit tired, I made a silly 1 minute mistake, otherwise fine. I was coming off the moor and down the big hillside and thought I knew exactly where I was going from a distance away, except I was wrong and when I got there I didn't have a clue where I had got to. Fortunately I hadn't gone too far astray. I felt very slow on the slog around the hill but picked up for the last few controls through the quarry. 4th place, After Martin (61) Jon Malley (62) and SteveW (10 seconds ahead of me).

orienteering 25:00 [3] ** 4.5 km (5:33 / km) +50m 5:16 / km

I have been very tired all day and I had DIY and furniture shifting to do so by the time I got round to going for a run I was well tired and my heart was beginning to play up which is what tends to happen when I get very tired. Actually the run was ok, I went round the permanent course in Beckett Park, the recommended light green standard course. I had to actually navigate for about 5 of the controls. All the posts were there. It was getting a bit dark for the last couple but I knew where those ones were.

running 49:00 [3] 5.75 mi (8:31 / mi) +120m 8:00 / mi

Adel Church. Feeling well out of it, and my legs like somebody has been hitting them with a hammer. Maybe I was trying a bit too hard last night, but I think I might need some new shoes. Slow. I took a shortcut through the churchyard because it is better lit than the road.

running 55:15 [4] 7.5 mi (7:22 / mi) +200m 6:48 / mi

Potternewton, Gledhow Valley Road, Stonegate Road. Started off feeling a bit sore in the legs and a bit slow, picked up after Scott Hall Road and I felt pretty good for a while, but I was suffering towards the end. Better up the hills than I have been. One of those runs where I seemed to get held up every time I tried to cross a road.

Heart clunked a few times early on but seems to be fine. My HRM, on the other hand, has given up. It has been saying low battery for two years but now I might actually have to replace it.

Mrs Frostbite still away

Monday Oct 18, 2010 #

Note

The last time I ran at Burbage was at the Home International in December 2006. That was the last day when I didn't have a heart problem. Browsing the splits the next day I got palpitations and ended up in hospital for a week.

Feeling much better today, but very tired. I'm frustrated by the time I lost at the end yesterday but lots of people missed the same controls, and overall I think it was a pretty good result after a bad week.

orienteering race 1:24:35 [5] **** 9.8 km (8:38 / km) +265m 7:36 / km

Compass Sport Cup Final, Burbage Moor. Started off steady and kept up a decent speed without really pushing too hard - I knew it was going to be a long hard course. I lost 3 minutes at a control in the rocky bit of woods and went to pieces a bit after that, really tired. A better finish might have gained me two or three places. I kept seeing Tim Britton running all over the place, and Ronnie Falk running steadily until he made a big mistake at 11, but it wasn't until after #13 that I got in a pack and they left me behind as soon as we went uphill.

32nd, 1 minute behind Martin and 3 behind Andy Thorpe.

running 30:00 [2] 3.0 mi (10:00 / mi) +120m 8:54 / mi
max:163

jogging with a few faster stretches trying to test the heart rate out, including a couple of 1 minute sprints up Weetwood Mill Lane. It went up to 163 without being too uncomfortable but it's still not right.

I'll have to see how it goes tomorrow.

conditioning 10:00 [1]

Only messing around really. I was warned not to try any abdominal exercises for a long time after my operation. For most of the first year it was too painful anyway - just trying to lift myself into a sitting position was bad enough. Now I don't get any pain but I really am starting from zero strength. I tried a few fairly gentle exercises (with helpful advice and accompaniment from Evie) but I need to do a lot of work just to get to the level of doing the exercises properly.

running 46:30 [3] 5.75 mi (8:05 / mi) +130m 7:33 / mi
ahr:148

Feeling a bit better than yesterday and made sure to stay in my comfort zone today. A fairly tame run - Adel Church and back, out via Sir George Martin Drive, back via Otley Road.

running 19:00 [2] 2.0 mi (9:30 / mi) +40m 8:57 / mi
(sick)

Set out to do a tempo run round Lawnswood. I was doing ok until I hit the first climb, then the heart started to wobble and the legs were struggling. I was still doing a decent speed but it got too hard and I jogged half a minute or so while the heart got back into rhythm, then picked up again until Horse where it kicked off again. Jogged back via Weetwood, reasonably comfortable at a lower speed. In the night afterwards I was getting lots of flutter keeping me awake and now I feel proper ill.

Easy jog, Oxley. Except it wasn't that easy. My legs are shafted.

hill running 2:24:00 [4] 13.0 mi (11:05 / mi) +850m 9:12 / mi

Kettlewell, Great Whernside via Dowber Gill and Hag Dyke, Buckden Pike, Buckden Lead Mine, Starbotton, Kettlewell along the river - as in May. I felt quite perky at the start but when I climbed out of the valley there was a big headwind that slowed me down on the climb of Great Whernside - 43 minutes to the top. After that it got hard, all the way across to Buckden Pike was 4 miles of ankle deep bog, except in the places where it was thigh deep bog - it nearly did for me. Once I reached the summit ridge it wasn't too bad. It was sunny all day in the valley but Buckden Pike was in cloud the whole time, and with the wind as well it was a bit unpleasant up there. On the way down I was just concentrating on keeping going. 2:24 in the end, quicker than last time but it was much harder work.

Lawnswood. I was suffering and thought I would be slower, but I'm quite happy with that.

running 59:50 [3] 7.0 mi (8:33 / mi) +250m 7:42 / mi

Hilly Kirkstall run. The middle part of the run contrives to go up and down lots of short steep hills in the streets leading down to the Kirkstall valley. Just plodding, comfortable at first but struggling at the end, still suffering from going too fast the night before.

running 54:45 [4] 7.5 mi (7:18 / mi) +200m 6:44 / mi
ahr:157

Potternewton Lane, Gledhow Valley Road, Stonegate Road. Still feeling a bit tired from the weekend and I thought I would struggle to match last weeks time. I put quite a lot of effort in and in the end was comfortably quicker, which is quite pleasing. Got a sore neck - must be from working too hard.

12 PM

running long 2:38:00 [3] 16.0 mi (9:52 / mi) +500m 9:00 / mi
ahr:136

Ilkley to Headingley, via White Wells, Rocky Valley, Burley Woodhead, Menston, Chevin, East Carlton, Horsforth Station, Clayton Wood, Butcher Hill. Very very wet - stream crossings were problematic, paths were several inches deep in water and I had some friction issues in road shoes. It took a long, long time but I am ok now.
