Note

walk. Leeds Country Way from Golden Acre to Robin Hood, 32 miles, 7 hours 40. I tried to go a bit quick early on and was suffering a bit at the end. It was a long way.

Sunday Sep 23, 2012 #

Note

Went for a walk - at least this went ok. Fox and Rabbit - Levisham - Saltergate Bank - Lilla Howe - May Beck - Falling Foss. Quite easy walking but very pleasant - the path across Levisham Moor is great, a ribbon of cropped grass through heather. The only unpleasant bit was from Fylingdales to Lilla Cross, which is virtually a road.

15 miles, 3 hours 50.

running 50:00 [3] 3.0 mi (16:40 / mi)

Set off vaguely heading for Newlay Bridge but it wasn't working out. Jacked in going across West Park fields and jogged at walking speed into Queenswood and tried a few sprints but nothing was going to work then jogged very slow home again. Time to stop trying. Again.

running 25:00 [3] 2.5 mi (10:00 / mi)

Set off to do Stepping Stones. For 4 minutes I was running properly - a decent pace (7 minute miles-ish), heart rate sound if a little high (155-160), feeling quite good. Then I slowed to go through a stile and bam - heart rate 195, legs wobbly. I just jogged from there, and came back by the top bridge and Weetwood Lane. HR settled down again after a few minutes.

running 23:30 [3] 3.0 mi (7:50 / mi)
ahr:179

Stepping stones, going a bit faster. Not too bad running, but HR still all wrong. Cruising nicely on the flat, cannot go uphills.

running 30:30 [2] 3.0 mi (10:10 / mi)
ahr:145 max:175

Stepping stones. A bit more reliable HR, but still not ok.

Thursday Sep 13, 2012 #

running 25:00 [3] 3.0 mi (8:20 / mi)
ahr:174

Stepping stones. Easier to run but HR still all over the place. Tried quite hard in the end to get 25 minutes, I couldn't have gone any faster.

running 26:30 [3] 3.0 mi (8:50 / mi)
ahr:166

Stepping stones. My back was still sore when I started but a bit of deep heat and a few minutes jogging sorted it out. I knew there was nothing really wrong - just old man stuff. Speeded up then but still with an unreliable HR. I just ignored it because the rest of me was feeling reasonably good, and I was almost doing real running. Colder.

Note
(injured)

I believe that hoovers should be left where they were last used. This makes them handy when they are needed again. Other people believe they should be put away in cupboards, which is how I did my back in. Quite sore now, but I don't think it is anything serious.

orienteering race 1:34:00 [3] 11.0 km (8:33 / km)

Aire Valley long-o. I went along to help at the start, and thought I would have a go at the shortest long course (10.5k) but they had sold out, so I did the longest instead. I chugged along slowly, a bit tired but not feeling too bad, and deliberately walking all the hills, until I conked out at Esholt Village. Then I walked along the river to the drinks point at the west end of Buck Wood, then jogged along the towpath back to Saltaire.

Not really prepared for a long course, didn't have any means of carrying drink. I would have been just about ok on the 10.5k course. Long would have been 21k if I had finished.

walking/jogging back

Saturday Sep 8, 2012 #

running 1:03:30 [3] 7.0 mi (9:04 / mi)
ahr:182

Butcher Hill, Newlay, Kirkstall. HR was still all over the place but I was able to be a bit more positive without being too uncomfortable. I was reasonably quick as far as Newlay Locks (30 minutes) but struggled a bit from there, particularly up the hill from Kirkstall. Hot.

running 31:30 [2] 3.0 mi (10:30 / mi)
ahr:152

Stepping stones, a little quicker and a little better, but still random HR.

Thursday Sep 6, 2012 #

running 34:00 [1] 3.0 mi (11:20 / mi)
ahr:149 max:176

Stepping stones, again. I keep expecting a miracle. Today was slightly better. Progress? Nah.

There is a switch in my heart. When I manage to switch it I will be able to cruise round this in about 25 minutes with a HR below 150.

Wednesday Sep 5, 2012 #

running 34:20 [1] 3.0 mi (11:27 / mi)
ahr:152 max:194

Stepping stones, more of the same. Actually a bit different - rather than randomly going up and down all over the place, my heart rate stuck at 156 for about the first 10 minutes - downhill or uphill made no difference, tried going slower and slower and that made no difference, until I was down to below walking speed. Then it went up on the big hill and was back to normal randomness after that. Probably just my HRM playing up.

Tuesday Sep 4, 2012 #

running 34:00 [1] 3.0 mi (11:20 / mi)
ahr:150

Stepping stones, same deal as yesterday, just trying to keep the HR down. It was easier than yesterday, not as stiff, but the HR was more erratic. It settled down a bit after the climb at the far end, and the highest HR was lower than yesterday, 182, and the average HR was marginally lower. I don't think I can really call it progress though. I could nearly walk it at this speed.

Cold still lingering.

Monday Sep 3, 2012 #

running 34:00 [2] 3.0 mi (11:20 / mi)
ahr:151

Stepping stones. Very gentle jogging trying really hard to keep the HR down below 150 but it still went > 190 on the steeper hills. Legs were sore from yesterday - too much time with no running - but otherwise reasonably comfortable.

Sunday Sep 2, 2012 #

running 1:03:00 [3] 6.5 mi (9:42 / mi) +150m 9:03 / mi
ahr:183

Not great. Got up to Adel Crag and back, pleasant afternoon in the sunshine. Heart rate all over the place, generally up around 190 when it shouldn't have been. No worse than a week ago, but no better either. At least the cold has more or less gone.
