As I’m writing this, probably the last XC ‘race’ for me this year.

10k time trail after the regional race. Spent a lot of time cheering the boys on in the freezing cold and snow as we were having a rough day vs Mines. Got extremely cold but managed to control the shakes and warm up in the van before I went out to warm up. Knew it was going to be a horrendous one when my headphones froze and stopped working on the warm up and my coat turned into a rigid sheet of ice from the rain freezing on contact with it.

Started off into a strong headwind which wasn’t around for the main race and the course was a bit more churned up, so knew it was going to be a hard task to run times close to the other boys on the team. We were helped out a bit though with two of the ATP boys pacing us, big shout out. Legs took about 3-5km to warm up properly meaning I lost contact with the front and was just churning it out by myself.

Once my legs got going I started to move well and had my head up with Jackson and the two CSU boys out front in my sights. Took off the arm warmers, meaning it was time for business. Big effort on the last lap (3km loops) meant I’d passed one CSU guy and had closed to within touching distance of the front two. However, they upped the pace here and gapped me a bit again. It proved to be enough as even though I dropped the filthiest finish I’ve ever managed in a XC race I could only pass the CSU guy down the straightaway, finishing 2 seconds behind Jackson.

It’s supposed to be 70 seconds conversion for a 10k at this altitude so basically ran close to my PB over the country and in the worst XC weather conditions I’ve ever ran in. Finally something to be proud of and signs of improvement. So much more suited to 10km XC and filthy conditions. Beat Danny’s time from the main race and was 4 seconds behind Josh and 12 behind Paddy. The conditions were significantly worse though and I believe in a race vs time trail setting I’d have gotten more out of myself so possibly could of been around 5th guy on the team including Jackson. Don’t think it’ll be enough to get a national berth but over the last 2 weeks I’ve shown significant improvements and I believe I’ve now adapted to Alamosa, so fingers crossed it’s onwards and upwards from here. Let’s see how this big rig can handle his first indoor track season!
