Walk/Hike (Trail "run") 2:30:00
shoes: Saucony Progrid Ride 6
Overcast, not too hot, but icky humid.
Joined Bryon for some trail "running". While I've been injured all summer, Bryon has gotten the trail running bug. I've been promising him I'd join him once September rolled around, and well, time was up.
We parked at the Elks. Where are we going? "Up past the reservoirs and then north." Do you have a map? "No." Compass? "No." Gps? "No." Do you know where you're going? "Not really". OK, sounds perfect, but I'm only up for a hour. So wherever we are after 30 minutes; I'll just turn around. Lead on.
First the good news. Bryon is really slow on trails, so I never felt pushed, quite the opposite. Now the fun news. Bryon is a hopeless navigator, and I have no powers of assertion.
OK, there's 30 minutes. Time for me to return. "Oh come on, we're almost to 202. You can turn around there." OK.
OK, there's 202, time for me to turn around. "Oh come on, let's do a little on the other side." OK.
"Strange the trails aren't the way I remember. Let's go left. No, maybe its right. Hmmm, what about down here. Oh look a road. It must be 141. (141 is 5 miles away.) Oh, look a piece of marked trail. Let's follow it." Ah, Bry, its now been an hour, and we're lost, maybe time to turn around? "Well, OK, party poopper."
"Hey, look 202, see we aren't lost anymore."
Um, Bry, I think this is where we need to turn left. See that pond, I'm sure we passed it on the way ... "Steve, Steve, no, it up this way. I'm sure of it. Follow me."
Um, Bry, I think we are long past the turn ... "No, no, I'm confident, keep going."
Um, Bry, you can see a big lake down there. We must be way past ... "No, no, just a bit further."
"Look at the great view!" Um, Bry we didn't have this view on the way out, so doesn't that mean ... "Just a bit further!"
Total time, 2.5 hours, I think, because my garmin died due to drained battery. OTOH, if I hadn't gone with him, Bry may have been still out there! Terrific fun.
