3 hours isn't great but it potentially could've been worse.
Still in the toilet queue when then race starts isnt the best strategy. Then trying to pass a couple of thousand runners to catch and yhen pass the 3hr pacers before leaving Phoenix park was also more stressful than i hoped.
So, with 44min for 10k, then 1hr 25 for 21k I'd clawed back time but at a cost. Plan A was to run another 85min half.
I held on for another 5k.
With 16miles done and 10.2 to go. I broke.
The adrenaline of passing through the field had ebbed away, a caffeinated gel may have helped (it worked for Belfast) but I wasn't carrying any.
Mentally I turned on myself, "I should've stuck with the 3hr group, what was I thinking?", just loads of tired, negative stuff. I was moving forward but with no motivation I was waiting to get caught and passed and I felt like an idiot.
This slump lasted for maybe 5miles. 3hrs was feeling like a failure. The one daft thing that pulled me to the finish was to beat my previous Dublin time. To show that it wasn't the course or the distance that beat me. It was that I beat myself. I sabotaged my own race unnecessarily and hopefully I'll learn something from that.
