not completely error free, some navigational decisions would've been different if ran in daylight. ground was really wet with shin deep mud in places.
1 was fine. i lost a bit of time deciding route choice to 2, was happy to stay in forest but it was a mud fest. 3 i cut into the forest too soon, should've gone further around the running track, mishortkut passed me here. 4 fine, 5 was happy with the running over the long leg but wasted time before & after punching control due mix up of SI units 109 & 105. declan had caught me before i'd left. 6, 7 & 8 were fine declan punched 6 ahead of me as i'd slightly overrun but i think i ran better routes to 7 & 8 and was ahead running to 9. hesistated, checking paths to 10. wasted a bit of time in the green at 11. went for 12 but was 20-30 secs over the 45mins.
collected controls 5, 14 & 15 and in someways was glad i hadn't got as far as 14 & 15 as the ground was saturated and a complete mudfest

included the Pre-O which caught me out on two controls and the other one was right but i marked the wrong box!! little did i know it was a sign of things to come. got a bit of running done waiting to start

i don't think i've had a race fall apart so spectacularly before. 4 big mistakes and a loss of 16 mins. i should've been round this course in 35mins easy. i'd left my garmin at home on charge which would've been interesting to put on routegadget just to show the complete fall from the top.
i don't think i was really running my own race & was distracted by other runners making bad choices that i hope i wouldn't normally make.
4. badly overrun & too high -lost 3 to 4mins
8. same again, caught by the wall but stayed too high for too long -lost 3 to 3:30mins
9. bad route choice & too slow -lost 1min
10. cut into forest too soon, then went too high for far too long -lost a ridiculous 8mins!!!
annoying thing is on the head to heads i had 56 wins, 1 draw & 3 losses but still finished way down the field in 19.

C Course - visit 15 controls in order in 45 mins
i had gone for a bit of a trail run for the warm up, was then told after i'd entered that the C course was too long to run in 45mins!! little did i know then that i wouldn't get 1/2 way round the course and still cover over 7km!
i hadn't eaten which may reflect my grumpiness but as far as training and/or racing was concenred this hadn't been thought through. this was more trail running with the occaisional control thrown in.
controls 1 to 6 were grand but i was sick of running the tracks & paths when there was plenty of runnable forest. after 6 i thought i'd see how runnable the marsh was a the southern end of the lake was as i was already soaked through but gave up & headed back to the road! i'd ran near enough 5km by control 7. not wanting to run back up the road i'd just come down i ran alongside the lake, crossed the bridge and ran up to the track junction where i thought i'd take a bearing through the forest. this wasn't wise or successful. i used up another 1km, got back on the road, went back into the forest, found McCloy, eventually left the forest (another 1km used up) & then the long dreaded road run back to car park already knowing we'd be late.

think i've found the place for interval training as i still haven't got out to the track sessions with NBH. a flattish loop of about 800m, fairly clean, possibilities for xc training too. only downside is it's within smelling distance of the docks!!
1. 4:52 ...a few more road junctions to cross getting there; 2. 4:35 ...quiet streets, less traffic; 3. 4:10 1st lap, running unknown track; 4. 3:56 2nd lap, rolling start; 5. 3:52 3rd lap, rolling start; 6. 4:35 4th lap, easy recovery pace; 7. 4:35 ...returning home; 8. 4:25 ...can get lucky with trafic lights.

NWOC Champs M/W Open 5.3km
probably a bit slow to 1 & 2, arrived at 3 ahead of billy so the race was on with the long leg to 4. i seemed to have the edge and crossed the track, ticking off control 10 slightly ahead with my route choice but was hesistant following the earth bank and billy stole in to the control ahead of me. then followed some good running & orienteering between us both. i thought i'd got the edge running a good route from 7 to 8 and had crossed the river first south of the control then running NW into the circle but i was possibly too high or the control too low. good running into 9 i then got ahead into 10. made the wrong route choice into 11 & lost time (billy was ahead & crossing track from 13 to 14 as i ran into forest to 13). 12 was fine, as was 13 & 14, ran a good line into 15 & was heading into 16 but self doubt crept in & i lost a few mins running the wrong way along the river. legs & motivation were fading for the last few controls but coasted round the remaining controls.
should've been sub 50 mins. sub 45 won it.

the "pressure" of a mass start meant i overran 1 slightly & then was 1/2 way to 3 before heading back to 2. this lost some time but the park is so runnable i could step up a gear or two. had caught paul by 7 & passed him after 8.
made an error at 13 that put myself back under pressure and although 14 was ok i overran 15 by quite a bit.
sub 30 was definitely possible & maybe close to 20mins if ran in daylight.
it was good to run on a map & be a bit competitive. the other venues should be more technical.

a large number of folk out for the 1st years anniversary. surprised that i only turned up to just 20 races over the last 12 months. happy enough with an average points score of 93.8 per race. but would really like to get below 18mins for this.
not as competitive field as usual with various xc races on. it was only right that matt lead start to finish. i tried chasing too hard for 1st half & then inevitably got caught & passed by david with 1.5k to go.
