Orienteering race 24:56 [3] 3.39 km (7:21 / km) +70m 6:40 / km
slept:4.0 shoes: VJ Integrator High (1)

Southern Champs at Star Posts. M21S. Rain didn't really give me much incentive to this and very wet walk to the start (despite nice convenient path that avoided the marshes!) followed by a two and a half minute gap between 11:53 and 11:54 starts (me being latter) being called up kind of set my mood for the rest of the course.

Started out pretty badly- unsure if I was on right path to 1. Control was on "middle" spur of two mapped but as it turned out to be in a re-entrant all along I just missed it without seeing and relocated from the other control on a [real] spur (144) up the hill behind it.

Then had trouble trying to understand which paths we could run and and which we couldn't as 1-2 crossed an old one we couldn't use before ending up on a nice new bike track that didn't appear to have any overprint. Then messed up the control by being too high as couldn't make out the contours in the open to realise it was 2 down from the top - comparing with the A3 map afterward and my contours were definitely a paler colour...

Couldn't match the map at all at 3 so should have just worked off a bearing from previous. Overtaken by Mark here so ran with him around paths to 4 which turned out to be a mistake as the hard surface started my knee hurting again (last night fine as the ground was so soft). Went on for 5, noting the massive unmapped gully with a mapped cycle path in it but was pretty obvious that I wouldn't be sensible to run the rest of the course - had I had a good first few controls then maybe I'd have tried more. Looked for 6 in the grot and didn't find it first time so saw no point in trying again. Slow walk back to the finish, stopping every so often to stretch knee.

Hearing Mark and Phil's complaints about the courses afterwards make it sound like I wouldn't have enjoyed the rest of it at all.

Bit of a strange place for an assembly area. Wonder why cars weren't allowed into north parking after 10.15 because courses would pass it but were allowed out from 1pm whilst courses (and many competitors) were still running? Bound to be some/several nopesport moans about the event... Oh well

O - Planning 2:30:00 [1] 5.0 km (30:00 / km) +100m 27:16 / km
slept:4.5 shoes: VJ Integrator High (1)

Knockalls with Joe - mostly checking over the finish, walking white and yellow, checking how distinct paths were, misc map updates etc. And revisiting the control I spent 40 mins looking for in the dark last week - turns out the features to the north line up with the tagged site perfectly, but features to the south lead you to the wrong place - think needs map work but Paul hasn't looked at that site yet.

Had a chat with a group of people pulling out the birch trees on the common - some seemed quite interested in orienteering so gave them a flyer to pass around their group. Glad we didn't map all the birch now! Paul was supposedly out at lunchtime as well as us but we didn't see him.

Planned to follow up with a trip around Aconbury to scout it out for night-o potential but weather had turned by this point and the wind even made driving pretty bad - branch came down and bounced off my windscreen in the car park so opted out and sat around at Joe's instead until just before the power lines came down. Lovely weather!

Orienteering - Night race (WNL Hollybed) 1:01:52 [3] 9.39 km (6:35 / km) +115m 6:13 / km
shoes: VJ Integrator High (1)

WNL on Hollybed Common. New area for me and managed to get there avoiding fallen trees etc on the way - was hoping to be shadowed from the wind by the hills.

Bit of a disaster navigation wise - should have cleared the map with a good few mins to spare, so surprised to be third (and I believe second WNL as neither Iain nor Tom have handicaps?).

Route S-41-58-49-61-43-66-55-44-50-60-46-70-65-53-48-56-64-59-63-52-69-62-68-42-47-67-51-45-57-54-F. 600 points less 19 as penalty = 581. Looks pretty good, now for the commentary...

41 - not used to map scale and poor bearing led me far too far south as hit the rough and had to come back up - 25s.
49 - no idea where I was going, overshot but led back into control by Gwen +10s
61 - again no idea where I was going but saw control and punched.
43 - rough bearing took me pretty much right to control but I didn't see it, went right and hit pond, turned back +30s
66 - should have turned in earlier - had to go back for it +30s and ended up leading a massive group into it.
55 - trivial control - took the road route to the east
44 - unsure if I was on right path to start with. Got into circle and had no idea what feature it was supposed to be on so headless chicken for 20s.
60 - poor bearing +15s
46 - big mistake - poor bearing, couldn't relocate, standing around looking lost, retraced steps back into nothing and went left until glimpsing control +60s
70 - found depression to west but didn't go in the right direction from it +10s
65/53/48 easy
56 - I have absolutely no idea where I went. At the time all I knew was that I was following a path that wasn't on the map. Wasn't looking for control but it just appeared alongside this unmapped path. If I didn't trip over it there was next to no chance I'd have found this.
64-59 - the marsh was wet
63 - cut across from house to NW, found a thicket thought "great" then no control - went onto next thicket - then realised I was on mapped thickets 200m north - should have paid attention to contours +90s
52 - into strong wind so very slow. Control was a bit under water
69 - very slow still into wind, was at right level then climbed up to edge of thickets and found no control - then saw it below me +20s
really struggling with wind so had to take a risk on the cut through - not as bad as anticipated but did rip my arm and top to shreds, stupidly fell off the path as it opened out and had to tread through thigh deep bramble +30s. At least found control easily.
68 - turned off at about right point, went through some passable veg and ended up in open at bottom - had to go back up to find control +20s
42 - took east route around reservoir - stopped and got confused as path ended and turned into a spillway. After 15s of thinking decided to cross spillway anyway
47 - dismissed the ride as incorrect so had to go back +20s.
45 - left 51 on right path but veered right when I shouldn't have - relocated from house lights but not until I'd overshot by over 200m +60s
57 - don't know what was going on here +20s
54 - overshot, seemed to think control would be on my left so started looking that side. Stopped and looked back and saw it behind me +20s.

Run to the finish was very very very very very muddy - tried running it but couldn't, really energy sapping so then had no energy to run the road to the finish. O-kit by far the most mud covered it's ever been (pretty much on a par with Cookworthy...)

Pretty bad run then, but seems a good score and very enjoyable. Assuming Iain and Tom don't count for scoring gives me 993 points - bringing my top 6 total to over 5500 for the first time ever - so confirming my best WNL season with 3 races still to go. More worrying is my handicap league score getting to 6700+ as I was rather hoping not to win it this year...

Running 1:01:18 [3] 11.05 km (5:33 / km) +90m 5:20 / km
slept:5.0 shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 10 g

Run from Frenchay. Good number out tonight with Mark S, Charles and Michael keeping the pace up and putting in some extra distance.

Wasn't going to let Michael beat me up any of the hills towards the end :-)

Left knee hurting again for the first half of run - suspect ITB related. Need to start stretching it again now that I have heating at home and don't spend all evening wrapped up in bed.
