Orienteering (JK Relay) 34:20 [3] 5.3 km (6:29 / km) +185m 5:31 / km
slept:5.0 shoes: inov8 Mudclaw300 Yellow1

JK Relays. 5.1km 225 climb 2nd leg.

Mark came in a bit earlier than I had expected so still running against some faster people. Didn't see much of other people after 2 mins though.

Walked most of the hill to 1. Hesitant to 2 and 4. Didn't realise 5 was beyond the first path so lost 10s checking. Contoured low for 8 as easier for me to run. Tripped a bit on the descent to the spectator control and lost two places. Then saw Ifor behind me and knew I didn't stand much chance against him on the descents.

Unlike Ifor, I found his control 13 bang on but mine was a bit further. Walked hill to 14 as per Saturday then quick-ish for me to 15 but saw the control and disregarded it as being mine, thus letting Ifor past. Held up to 16 but couldn't descend very quickly. Closed the gap right up on the run in so must have been down to a second or so at handover.

Glad I didn't have to run any further.

Was ahead of Mark Burley's time at the spectator control for the same distance. Paul had same gaffles as me and I was ahead of him up to 7! Roughly 1-2 mins down on Mark S, Keith and Ifor's times for the short leg.

Probably my best JK to date.

Orienteering race (JK Day 3) 1:15:05 [3] 10.27 km (7:19 / km) +185m 6:42 / km
slept:4.0 shoes: inov8 Roclite295 (2)

Cold Ash. 8.2km, 225 climb M21S course.

Started well but then had a disaster on control 1. Had attacked from the wrong pit and was running parallel, the other way to what I thought. 3 mins lost. Slow to 2, ok to 3. Got to around 4 fairly quickly but then thought I had hit the other ponds so wasn't confident - 30s. 5 ok, 6 ok but again not at all confident.

7 was the next disaster. Got through the rhododendrons, found a control that wasn't mine, turned the right way and then hit the most distinctive vegetation boundary that I had ever seen - saw none on the map so turned around and went back the way I had come, but lower down. Hit a control on a knoll and relocated from that. Turns out my control was just beyond the veg boundary, yet said boundary was not on the map at all. At least I wasn't the only one to do this...

Then just slow the rest of the course. Thought 15 was on the rootstock not the veg boundary, and didn't read the contours well to 19.

Probably at least 10 mins of mistakes today - compared against 2 mins yesterday. At least the ranking points for yesterday being nowhere near a top score and today's being higher for a terrible run - will obviously incentivise me to do more orienteering...

Orienteering race (JK Day 2) 1:06:13 [4] 9.76 km (6:47 / km) +325m 5:49 / km
slept:1.5 shoes: inov8 Mudclaw300 Yellow1

M21S course at Hambleden. 8.5km with 425m climb.

Steady start to get used to the scale. Then came a hill and I walked it along with everyone else. Took an ok roughly straight route on the long leg to 5 but didn't execute it well as was walking/running so slowly.

Hill 5-6 was hard. Came out at the wrong junction but relocated from the drinks station. Then messed up 6 by going to a different control - lost me about 1 min. Got 7 ok but the feature was dubious. Again walked hills up to 8 and 9. For the latter did identify that the fence was not in the same direction as mapped so cut a corner and didn't lost any places.

Cut straight to 10 but was too far west and then turned the wrong way. 30s-1 min lost? Control picks to 13 went well and wasn't distracted by all the other courses. Did the hill to 14 quite well.

Rest of the course fairly easy. Picked the pace up to hold on to Mark. Tried for the run in but a good 10s down on the fastest.

Event: JK 2013

Running 20:00 [3] 2.5 km (8:00 / km)
slept:5.0 shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 10 g

Extended warm up. Went to find the elite warm up area.

Orienteering - Urban race (JK Sprint) 19:28 [5] 4.0 km (4:52 / km) +15m 4:47 / km
shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 10 g

M21E course around Reading University.

Overshot 1 - lost 5-10s. Then just slow around the next few controls. Went the right side of the buildings each time so no other real mistakes.

Very hesitant going into 11 via the underpass as it looked to just be a building - probably lost another 10-15s. Very tired by the finish.

Only about 6 mins off the lead but better world ranking points (although much worse BOF points) than I achieved at the British Sprints last year.

Would argue that I lost around a minute combined due to trying to punch the controls when they seemed to always be aligned intentionally to be the wrong way. Might have helped if the flashes were instantaneous but some were taking 4-5 seconds to confirm the punch.
