Running (Westbury Harriers) 55:22 [5] 8.0 km (6:55 / km) +50m 6:43 / km
slept:4.5 weight:69.4kg shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 10 g

Six loops of Glenavon Park. Surprisingly consistent at between 2:05 and 2:10 every time despite feeling like I was getting worse.

Left calf started hurting on the way back. Has been doing so on and off since Tuesday - maybe something to do with 70 mins in stop-start traffic on the clutch?

Orienteering race (Long Valley South) 1:19:18 [3] 10.56 km (7:31 / km) +260m 6:41 / km
slept:4.0 weight:69.8kg shoes: inov8 Mudclaw300 Yellow1

MLS at Long Valley South. 8.6km brown.

Started raining as I got to start but luckily passed over. Hesitant to 1 so stuck to paths early on. Went south from 4 as was going ok until the open. Then misinterpreted contours and paid more attention trying to avoid the worst of the tussocks and marsh rather than checking I was going the right way. Shouldn't have cut the corner off as cost me a good 2 mins.

Should have gone straight on 6-7. Brashings around 12, 16, 17 unpleasant so mostly a walk. The green going into 17 would have been ok had it not been for the bracken which was growing horizontally so kept catching on it. Not happy with 19 - caught stuck knee deep trying to go around the marsh only to find control a couple of contours higher than mapped. Should have gone around paths to the north and back in. Found the finish despite lack of tapes.

Not sure what to make of it overall. Some good long legs but controls were either very easy (on or just off paths) or in some crap. Map needs a bit of work in places but wouldn't expect a low key event to be perfect.

Running 1:04:46 [3] 10.6 km (6:07 / km) +100m 5:50 / km
slept:4.0 shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 10 g

From Cumberland Basin along the gorge than through Leigh Woods, back across Suspension Bridge.

Left foot hurting a bit from spending the last 70 minutes constantly on or adjusting the clutch - traffic worst I've known it coming here and been caught out three times before hence allowing 70 mins to do a mere 6 miles. Not sure I'll bother trying to come here next time.

On my own for most of the time along the river so taking it fairly easy. Put in a bit of an effort over the bridge to try and regain a top-10 position on Strava. Have to make do with 9th (was once 6th), only tied with Duncan. Should've tried harder.

Note

Is it too early to start plugging the NGOC Galoppen at Knockalls on Sunday 23rd February? Expertly planned by Joe G and me. Not accepting attendance at British Nights as an excuse out of it...

Late night session with purple pen and realised the courses look amazing. Should hope so too as we're already on the 13th iteration and still haven't sent them to the controller! Still another 4 months to go to reach perfection...

Running - off road warm up/down 15:00 [3] 2.0 km (7:30 / km) +30m 6:59 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw300 Yellow1

Jog to start
12 PM

Orienteering race (WIM Galoppen) 1:05:20 [4] 10.35 km (6:19 / km) +170m 5:50 / km
slept:5.0 weight:68.8kg shoes: inov8 Mudclaw300 Yellow1

WIM Galoppen at Godshill. 8.8k brown course.

Had a very poor start and mostly blame the map - lost 2 mins on 1 as was looking for the veg boundary it was on and overshooting, only to find on the return it wasn't on veg boundary at all. Took some time fighting bracken to 2, again on straight route to 3 where it was hiding some evil ankle turners. Light green veg turned progressively darker than mapped until it was impenetrable so ended up having to go round - +30s. Not sure on 4 - was too far north and lost 30s.

4-5, came out on wrong path and had to go through some awful thigh deep brambles that weren't on the map - maybe +30s - to get to main track. Veg at 5 nothing like the map. 6 ditches not as mapped but followed the main one until the control. Into the open for 7, no idea where I went but I couldn't and still can't get the map to fit the ground.

8 ok, 9 bingo, got to within 5 steps of control but couldn't see flag or feature for bracken - +30s. Took the sensible route via 17 on 9-10 so made back a minute on the pack that had got away from me. The fight on 14-15 indistinguishable from open forest elsewhere so went straight. Fairly straight on 17-18, found the bend in the path and headed for the vegetation. Almost certainly crossed an OOB marsh on way to 19 but impossible to tell on the ground. Not convinced map right around the control and turned off too early +45s. Non trivial finish.

Really disappointed with this. Thought the map was pretty poor in places and memories of last year's WIM Galoppen are still pretty fresh. Only kept going as there was a chance of un-overtaking Dale and of beating Mark. At least I can be sure that NGOC's Galoppen offering will be much, much better.

5th when I left, 6 mins down on Jack, 4 on Dale, 2 mins up on Mark and Gavin. Finished the course so much better than Clive.

Event: League 2

Orienteering race (NGOC League) 48:55 [3] 6.56 km (7:27 / km) +165m 6:37 / km
slept:4.5 weight:69.3kg shoes: inov8 Mudclaw300 Yellow1

NGOC League at Bixslade. Dressed as Michael Hallett. 5.8km blue course. Lots of brashings meant it pretty hard going for me and recovering ankle struggled. Map needs some work.

Hesitant to 1 and overshot - lost 30s. No idea what was happening at 2 and brashings were enhanced so pleased to eventually find it - suspect lost 1-2 mins. 3 ok, found path to 4 ok then missed 5 slightly and lost c40s stranding around in centre of circle trying to spot it.

Out of energy by now and combined with rough underfoot walked a lot of the way 5-6. On 7-8 went along wiggly track to 14 first. Ankle tried to go on the way out of the block after 8.

Pleased 9 so easy, then lost a fair bit of time descending into valley when, in hindsight, staying high would have been better. After 10 decided to descend to valley again as the drop at 11 looked horrible on the map. Paid off in dividends as there was even a half track through the brambles onto the ride that went right to the control.

Took first path on 12-13 which probably was a mistake, cut straight across light green towards end was fine.

End result, about a minute down on Joe and 4 or 5 on Kit. Given not at my best and the steep descents and brashings were about the worst combination of terrain for my balance and ankle it seems a pretty good result.

Running (Westbury Harriers) 49:53 [5] 9.34 km (5:20 / km)
slept:4.0 weight:69.5kg shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 10 g

Westbury Harriers.

Battled through the horrendous traffic as far as Filton roundabout then Southmead Road all clear - think 18 minutes is a record fastest drive time, they should shut the M4 during rush hour more often!

5x 3 mins with 90s rest than 3x 1 min with 1 min rest, on the grass. After last week didn't want to take it too hard so that I will feel okish for the weekend. Fairly steady - although dreading the session I find 3 min efforts easier than 90s or 2 mins, and 1 min short enough that I've barely started by the time it's over.

Still felt like I wanted to be sick for most of the session.

Neil ran the session instead of Mike and was quite encouraging.

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/394966577

Think over the last month I've pulled back the km deficit from the start of the year so now back on track to exceed last year's total. Just need to keep coming to these sessions and start doing the Army events on Wednesdays now I'm down to a 4 day week for the rest of the year.

12 PM

Running - off road 8:00 [3] 1.2 km (6:40 / km)
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw300 Yellow1

Jog to start as running a bit late (or thought I was)
1 PM

Orienteering race (CS Trophy Final) 1:25:00 [4] 12.07 km (7:03 / km) +380m 6:05 / km
slept:2.0 weight:67.6kg shoes: inov8 Mudclaw300 Yellow1

CompassSport Trophy. Non-comp on brown. Straight line 10.3k.

Wrote off the race before I'd started. Jogging to the start had exhausted me and I'd fallen into a walk by the start kite. Probably something to do with lack of food/sleep and generally feeling crap over the last few days.

Being a late starter meant I got to benefit from advice of finishers - longer road/track routes often better than straight. Put this to the test on 1-2 where I ran pretty well right up until just on the edge of the circle where I turned off the track 100 yards too soon. +60s? Mistake allowed Duncan to get past me.

Don't think I did 4 that well but it seems from splits that everybody else ballsed it up. Lost some time on 6 in the bracken. Found a depression and worked back from it.

Long leg 6-7 couldn't run it. Towards the end of the leg got the veg boundary and fence symbols the wrong way round and fought through some crap only to find myself not where I expected. Lost 30s or so and got overtaken by the last brown runner. Went past 11 on way to 8 and got to see Duncan making a mess of finding it.

10-11 went straight and regretted it. Was verging on inpenetrable but I just about got through but cost me about a minute. Then too high on 13 and lost 2 mins.

Went past the Rising Sun on last long leg to 15 then cut across just south of the ponds, seems a good route. Then elephant track to 16. No energy at all left but wanted to beat Joe's time of 85 something. Was tight. Walked to 17 and luckily led into it by a WIM. Run in hampered by some walkers who refused my request for them to get out of the way because "we're walking here" and then started to mouth off - her husband pulled her out of the way when he realised I wasn't stopping...

Just missed out on third NGOC. If I was competitive I wouldn't have counted unless I shaved off 5s somewhere. About 5 1/2 mins of mistakes out there seems quite a lot - really not happy with messing up 2 and 13. No idea how much lack of energy cost me.

Quite enjoyed the memory test for getting back to the cars - seems all the tapes and signs had been collected in and deposited in a pile at the end of the C track!

Running - off road race (FoD Parkrun) 21:17 [5] 5.0 km (4:15 / km)
slept:3.5 weight:68.6kg shoes: inov8 Roclite295 (2)

Second go at Forest of Dean parkrun. Was running better than last time but feeling much worse. Embarrassingly only 4th best orienteer but still managed to regain 7th place token. Got shouted at to save my energy for tomorrow about 2/3 of the way round, didn't get chance to explain I was n/c...

10 AM

O - Planning 40:00 [1] 4.0 km (10:00 / km) +100m 8:53 / km
shoes: inov8 Roclite295 (2)

Another quick trip to Knockalls for the Galoppen.
1 PM

Orienteering (NGOC Parkend) 52:55 [3] 7.16 km (7:23 / km) +300m 6:07 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw300 Yellow1

NGOC informal at Parkend. 5.8k blue course.

Found it hard going with all the crap on the ground. Also feeling the morning a bit. Lost time on 3, map dodgy, look forward to when it gets redone with lidar. Lost 2 mins or so on 6 - contoured as per map but ended up far higher than the control.

Not sure on 11. Map needs some work. South route 12-13 ok but not much to work on in the wood. Straight 14-15, round 15-16. Didn't like the finish, really struggling to get through the undergrowth. Just about avoided the worst of the rain.

Pretty much matched Joe exactly on all splits and my time loss on 6 about the same as his on 12.

Can't say I enjoyed it. Not sure I'm enjoying anything at the moment.

Westbury Intervals. 10x 90s on the grass.

Started out quick but soon tired - found 4th the hardest before getting more steady around 410-420m per 90s. Found I was going quicker towards the end.

Hard session.

Running 51:20 [3] 8.9 km (5:46 / km) +70m 5:33 / km
slept:3.0 weight:69.9kg shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 10 g

Around Thornbury.

Shorter than normal as everybody else felt lazy. Wasn't really in the mood for running and was going fairly effortlessly throughout.

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/391014547

Note

After some effort from Greg to first persuade me and then contact Mark Dyer on my behalf, am now running non comp on Sunday.

Start somewhere between Iain Embrey and Duncan so will make a pleasant change to be running alongside peers of similar standard to me.

102 minutes before courses close for 10.3k should be doable so long as I'm clean. Can't be allowed to start earlier for fear of giving NGOC any further advantage after the start times were allocated as consecutive slots at half hour intervals... Probably shouldn't point out that I'm starting only 4 mins behind Andy Craig then...

Orienteering race (NGOC Standish) 52:38 [3] 6.34 km (8:18 / km) +270m 6:51 / km
slept:3.5 weight:69kg shoes: inov8 Mudclaw300 Yellow1

NGOC informal at Standish. 5.6km blue.

Being very careful with ankle from start so should have a rubbish time on 1-2. Around by car park to 3, hit ditch at wrong point yet again. Bit lucky on 4 but struggled on descent.

Pretty good on 5-9, 9-10 a bit dodgy on the slope and hit the ditch miles too high as I always do. Lost a bit on 11 too - didn't understand the contours as control circle hid them a bit.

Descended from 12 surprisingly well and climbed from 13 ok. Took north route 15-16, think south a bit better.

Probably the best run I've had here.

Running (Westbury Harriers) 52:04 [4] 8.42 km (6:11 / km)
slept:4.5 weight:69.5kg shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 10 g

Short pyramids (30s, 1 min, 2 min) on the grass. x3

Felt best on the last pyramid. May have taken a while to get going in the cold and was distracted a bit before the start so had to rush salt/fluid intake before running.

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/388531538

New GPS watch has almost arrived, not sure it'll be any better but surely can't be much worse? Bit annoyed that amazon seem to have abandoned Royal Mail so I now have to arrange for it to be redelivered rather than go down to the sorting office.

Orienteering race (Cherhill Down) 50:20 [5] 7.44 km (6:46 / km) +310m 5:36 / km
slept:4.5 weight:69kg shoes: inov8 Mudclaw300 Yellow1

NWO at Cherhill Down. 6.6km blue course. Hot

Paths to 1, bit too far along gully. Bit east on 2 but a fairly obvious feature. Contoured to 3, think straight was better as shorter but same climb.

5 much further west than mapped, then exit through the overprinted paths - map not quite right so stopped/hesitated before crossing gate and carrying on. Rapidly losing pace - walked up to 6, then 7,8. Tried jogging out of 9 but didn't last long.

Leaving 10 too exhausted to hold compass flat so ended up following the contours rather than crossing. Wasn't the only one to do this. Got 11 ok, slightly off on 12 but at least did find it before 13. Hesitant on 13, walked 14 in same time as Phil M ran...

Straightish on 15 but turned off at wrong junction - lost 50s or so. Crossed the ditches to 16 slower than path, not much to work on for control.

Definitely the worst I have felt physically during a run for some time (Llanthony fell race?).

Running - off road race (FoD Parkrun) 21:31 [4] 5.0 km (4:18 / km)
slept:4.0 weight:69.4kg shoes: inov8 Roclite295 (2)

Trying out the Forest of Dean parkrun as everyone says it's good. From description thought the best tactic for me was to get some space away from others so that I could see where my feet were landing.

Started out toward the front with a back about 30m ahead of me. Steadily overtaking all the way until I ended up in 7th. Another 100m and I'd have got 6th. Seems all the good people ran it last week.

Running - off road 31:00 [3] 4.5 km (6:53 / km) +140m 5:58 / km
shoes: inov8 Roclite295 (2)

Short jog around Knockalls to get the GPS plot of the new paths and fences.

Sadly, new GPS watch is worse than shit and has drifted almost 100m off line in places. If it's that bad it's unusable - so much for progress as the previous two were fine under trees.
11 AM

Note

3 hours mapping the Archenfield estate - came across a fellow orienteer whilst doing so. Then walking in the woods behind Cinderford - much nicer than I was led to believe.

slept:4.5 weight:69.4kg shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 10 g

Westbury Harriers training. Woodland Grove 880m loop x6.

Work been very hectic over the last few days (all of our reporting files got decommissioned by our supplier - a company affectionately known as "Crapita") with the due to arrive tonight only 3 days late - only found out at 5.45 that I was able to leave to make it to Westbury.

Legs not feeling happy on the tarmac and combination of lack of preparation and cold meant that I was feeling pretty bad. Put a half hearted effort for the first half lap, then tried the second half to set a time of 2:52 or 2:54 - about Ifor's strava time - but for the other 5 loops I pretty much just jogged at normal pace. Feeling terrible.

Given how I felt, times fairly good when compared to the previous two times I'd done this session.

From Bradley Stoke leisure centre out to Aztec West then back around the nature reserve tracks.

Running fairly well despite legs not feeling great. Opted to do the effort around Aztec West on my own as prefer to do try and set my own pace on longer efforts and work on the mental side.
