Orienteering - Urban race (Winscombe Urban) 50:35 [3] 9.09 km (5:34 / km) +95m 5:17 / km
slept:6.5 shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 10 g

BOK Urban at Sidcot School. Quite wet. Course was 5.1km+1.3km.

Started out badly and may have gone through some olive green but map was quite hard to read - didn't take long for it to fade along folds due to water.

Slow over the bridge - steps too steep and slippery for me to be confident - but did the long leg to 2 ok. No real misses on the next several controls and was planning ahead quite well. Went back on myself 10-11 and east route 14-15.

Up the hill to 16 could really feel Hopton in my legs so glad I was keeping it steady.

The large scale bit around the school to finish off was good fun. Not enough chance for me to read the descriptions so went the wrong side on 23.

Certainly starting to tire by the end but quite pleased with my pace today after the last weekend.

Orienteering race (SINS Brown Clee) 1:07:43 [4] 8.16 km (8:18 / km) +205m 7:22 / km
slept:4.25 weight:72.1kg shoes: inov8 Mudclaw300 Yellow1

7.2km short brown course.

Got to the start kite with no nav problems but then lost 3 mins on the short leg to 1. Stupidly went to the parallel but unmapped earth bank alongside the gully north of the earth bank I wanted. Mark caught up and found the wrong control, punched and ran off. I went down the gully to find the right one so that I then didn't need to even try the rest of the course to beat him...

Very slow 2-3. No pace in legs at all. Found 7 and 6 on the way but messed up between 6 and 3 as couldn't match the green blobs to anything. Surprised Joe only caught me up at the control. Another balls up on 4 as confused by the big green thicket not existing and lost my bearing in one of the marshes. Relocated from a distinct veg boundary. Didn't do 6 very well.

Going well 6-11, despite the head wind and climb. Slightly off on 12 and lost 45s or so. Went too high up on 18 so had to come back down - may have helped me if the line was broken so as to make the contours more clear. Managed to keep going to the finish.

Pretty bad run, annoyed at 1. As with all days had lost my 4 mins lead in the first few controls, often, I would argue, due to map rather than me. Probably about 8 mins of mistakes in total today - 5 I would accept as being wholly my own fault.

Nice area and nice course at least.

Orienteering race (SINS Hopton) 1:19:44 [4] 7.56 km (10:33 / km) +375m 8:27 / km
slept:4.0 shoes: inov8 Mudclaw300 Yellow1

SINS day 2 at Hopton, 6km short brown.

Started out badly with a 2 min loss on 1 - Approaching from the hill top north didn't work - in wrong place? - had assumed that the runnability direction was wrong. Some way off and hit an unmapped path. On exit, made similar mistake to on entry and missed the junction for turning down to 2 - another 2 mins lost.

Very slow on 3, was contouring and climbing yet ended up several contours lower than I should have, on a huge unmapped platform. I continued on whilst everybody else milling around turned back. I found the control first...

More minutes lost in the grot at 4. Hit a veg boundary that wasn't mapped and got confused. Should have realised I was far too close to the path and continued. Another balls up on 7.

Didn't follow the taped route 8-9 (went diagonally up the hill, as per the non-OOB) so assumed I had to disqualify myself when I finished. The taped route went left into the OOB and crossed the stream by the fence, then straight up the hill - surely anybody who followed went OOB and should also be disqualified?). Then pretty much gave up. Next controls fairly easy but a slog. Got to 16 and was so fed up with fighting through trees, getting my arms and torso ripped to shreds and not being able to run at all (4.8kph av speed) that I broke with convention, found a nice path to run down to stretch my legs and skipped the last controls.

Definitely a worse area than Ringwood, not sure yet of Worlebury standard. Would take a hell of a lot of persuading to get me back here again.

Orienteering - Urban race (SINS Ludlow) 39:08 [5] 7.37 km (5:19 / km) +100m 4:58 / km
shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 10 g

Ludlow urban. 5km men's open course.

Bit surprised to be called up 25 minutes in advance of my time due to them apparently starting the race late. Continues the 100% record of WRE making a mess of start times at the competitions I attend. Did mean there were lots of people out at the same time.

First 5 controls all easy. For 6 went through the graveyard to the south then left to the north for 7. West route to 8 which I think was marginally quicker. Ramp SW of 10 was mapped a bit dodgy - caused a bit of confusion. Through the pub both in and out of 11. Spotted the trick at 13.

Gave a lot of though to 15 early on and disregarded the route most people in my group took - thought about going right round but as so high at 14 went by 1 albeit slowly. Went up the road 19-20 rather than through the nettles and didn't lose much as it conveniently got me into the castle just in time to see the rest of the pack realise the control was under the bridge.

Had visited Ludlow Castle three or four times - most recent being 1998ish. Surprised how much I remembered so navigating from 23 to the finish was almost effortless.

Good fun. Hard running. Restored my faith in orienteering somewhat.

Orienteering race (SINS Croft Castle) 1:05:14 [3] 8.77 km (7:26 / km) +235m 6:34 / km
slept:5.5 shoes: inov8 Mudclaw300 Yellow1

7.3km short brown course.

After 1 found veg much worse than expected from map. Backed out of going acros and went by the big thicket so as to hit the path. Then turned off too early and lost 2 mins looking in the wrong place - think the black X on the map was lower down than mapped.

Tired by 3. Didn't spot best routechoice to 5 and lost a lot of time trying to find a way of getting down. Not fun. At least found nice contouring track 5-6 although lost 1 min finding control (warned in start lanes it was dodgy).

No pace up the hill out of 9, 10 ok; alongside Paul had issue with mapping of paths on way to 11 then messed it up. Not convinced by it's location but GPS implies it wasn't wrong in the way I had thought. Kept just above the steep bit to 12 then Mark S overtook as I fought my way over brambles.

Going well across the common to 16 and 17 but had lost the path and thought I'd gone too low so went wrong way for control.

Worked out I'd lost around 10 mins in total. Apart from 4-5 being awful terrain for me, it was quite nice but wouldn't be rushing back here in a hurry.

Orienteering race (Warmley) 33:00 [3] 6.28 km (5:15 / km) +60m 5:01 / km
slept:5.0 weight:73.9kg shoes: inov8 Mudclaw300 Yellow1

BOK event at Warmley. 5.4km long course.

Running pace felt steady but not quick. Managed to keep going throughout without slowing but surprised at how hot I felt.

No mistakes, good route choices. Only problem was that I found I didn't seem to get the chance to read the map fully so was missing features in the circle.

Was within a few seconds of having overtaken all starters ahead of me. 20s off Burley, about 5 mins down on Adam. Good to see so many fellow NGOC out, sounds like there could be enthusiasm for some of my ideas...

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/316646526

Have to hope for more ok runs like this if I stand any chance of holding off Mark (1-2 mins behind) and Joe (4 mins) on any of the days this weekend...

Running 43:03 [3] 8.89 km (4:51 / km) +40m 4:44 / km
slept:5.0 weight:73.7kg shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 10 g

As BOK run a bit far away went to the Downs instead with the aim of improving some splits on Strava. Bumped into Tim L before I started and had a long chat with him. As he said something about Hiatt Baker being knocked down went down Parrys Lane and, naturally, had to put in a hard effort up Hollybush Lane to try and steal Ifor's KOM off him. Haven't got the pace on the flat to challenge the real runners on the other segments.

Downside to putting in the odd efforts early on was that I tired myself out completely - really am not feeling fit at the moment. Struggled around the last 4km enjoying being outside in the warm and sunshine.

Pushing up the numbers of ex-UBOC members out tonight, Ben Littlejohns said hello as he ran past me just before I left.

Orienteering race (BKO Bloom Wood) 57:46 [3] 8.32 km (6:57 / km) +220m 6:08 / km
slept:5.5 shoes: inov8 Mudclaw300 Yellow1

BKO regional at Bloom Wood. 7.1km blue course.

After a lot of faffing around in the start box trying to fix the broken strap on my hired emit card ended up starting two minutes ahead of Colin Dickson so had the aim of holding on to him when he overtook me.

Started out ok but could definitely feel yesterday in my legs and so the pace was slow. No real mistakes until 7 where I was possibly a contour too low and this was where Colin caught me. Took his route through the brambles rather than around to 8 but was being so careful with my footings that he got well ahead. Last I saw of him was him disappearing into the green on leg 9-10.

Without such expert help I made a huge mess of 10. Not at all sure how the mapper distinguished forest walk with and without undergrowth but there was no obvious difference on the ground. Not nice. Bearing off, ended up on the path to the north and had to go back in. Should have been an indistinct path but I didn't find it so resorted to looking everywhere until I found the control. 11 was even harder, still in the horrible bit. Luckily in my struggles I found control 6 and worked from that.

With these mistakes, the person who started a minute ahead of me had caught me so ran hard down to 12. Ankle not happy. Contouring 13-14 was a bit rough but I seemed to lose a lot of height at the end and found a different control on a knoll.

15 was a bit of a disaster. Needed to find the ride junction but couldn't see any. Assumed that, as per the rest of the map, the big distinct mapped rides were not distinct on the ground so carried on. After a while of finding nothing worked out by elimination that I had gone 400 yards too far up the hill and took a sharp turn south and found it. 2.5 mins lost but at least loads of other people thought my NGOC top made me infallible and followed me the wrong way.

16 dodgy map then it was just running all the way to the finish. Think I lost 5 mins overall. Was 6th/53 and just 7 mins off the lead when I left.

Orienteering - Urban race (Dorset Sprint Champs) 15:43 [5] 3.12 km (5:02 / km)
shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 10 g

Round 2 around Bournemouth University. 2.25km course.

Weather had warmed up by now and, despite previous run, felt that I was more steady and comfortable with the pace now. Was, of course, running a bit more slowly.

Got everything cleanly apart from 3 where the map was very hard to interpret. Caught a Torquay school kid before 2 and had him follow me up until I dropped him at 14.

No real mistakes other than 3 (20s) so quite happy with this run and managed to recover one of the 5 places I had lost in the first run. As per last week, all I had to do was go to all of the controls in the right order to beat my main competition...

Orienteering - Urban race (Dorset Sprint Champs) 15:22 [5] 3.48 km (4:25 / km)
slept:5.0 weight:73.9kg shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 10 g

Dorset Sprint Champs Round 1. 2.375km long course around the Talbot Village housing estate.

Course was very criss-crossed and control numbers hard to see. Spent so long looking for number 1 that I didn't get chance to read the map properly so turned off one junction too early and ended up at 2. 30s lost. Then had to really pick up the pace to make up for this.

Felt very unfit throughout, found it all a struggle. Very glad to see the finish. No further mistakes and think I took the best route choices.

Mistake at 1 cost me 5 places.

Orienteering - Urban race (Bath Uni Sprint) 24:09 [3] 4.49 km (5:23 / km)
slept:4.5 shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 10 g

3.3km sprint around Bath University.

Very technical area, especially so at 1:5,000 scale. Had to stop several times just to read the map. Interpreted it well but probably didn't take the best route choices on some of the legs as it seems that the main staircase was always the fastest. As is the way with sprints, I would have lost more time stopping and thinking than I would by taking a non-optimal route.

So no real mistakes but maybe 2-3 mins lost on route choice/trying to read map.

Brilliant fun.

Down by the river to Frampton Cottrell and back the direct way. Had good pace at times but didn't feel like I was running well.

Was a bit damp.

Orienteering race (NGOC League 7) 58:10 [3] 8.05 km (7:14 / km) +180m 6:30 / km
slept:5.0 weight:73.4kg (injured) shoes: inov8 Mudclaw300 Yellow1

NGOC League at Mallards Pike. 6.5km blue course.

Started out ok, going into bits of wood we don't normally see. Found a nice path but otherwise was finding the brashings pleasant when compared to last week.

Bit lucky on 3 as I used the turn and hope approach. Hadn't even started looking for the control when I stumbled upon it. Went along the cycle path to 5 and saw the control from some difference. Straight lined 5-6 as far ad the first stream, then went around the paths, going around the dark green then resuming the line.

Bit off on 7 - could've lost a minute. Then very gentle crossing the stream. Ankle went a bit getting onto the path just before 8. Limped for a minute or so and then it felt fine again. Poor line into 9. Left going towards 11 then realised I had to go to 10 first. Fighting through the hawthorn, wished I had skipped it - lots of scratches right down my back and was impaled for a time before somebody else freed me.

Mess on 11 - on wrong earth bank. The standard mapped bank was much bigger than the form lined one. 60-90s lost? Next few controls quite straightforward but hesitant into 15. Went roughly straight to 16 but would have been faster around by the road.

slept:5.0 (injured) shoes: inov8 Mudclaw300 Yellow1

BOK informal at Oldbury Court. 5.3km brown course.

Still lacking energy from the weekend and then started badly landing badly on ankle just at the corner of the car park and it then feeling like it would go properly right across the grass to 1.

Big mistake on 2 as thought map implied the control was not right next to the stream. Lost at least 1 minute. Bottom route to 3, via the top to 4. Went straight 5-6 which was fine but brambles bad coming out.

Via the top to 7, along river may have been better but it's boring. Went via the top 11-12 and 12-13 and 13-14.

Thought I was going well after 7 but not pushing it at all. Very careful on all the descents and where there were any wet rocks/roots/twigs.

slept:5.0 (injured) shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 10 g

Dorking urban. 7.5km mens open race.

Not feeling good going into this and the heat wasn't going to help. Slow getting into the map so slow into 1. Improved from there and was doing a good job planning ahead so did 12 quite cleanly. After 13 got stuck waiting for a gap in traffic for at least 30s and then was completely exhausted once I'd got to 14 - even walking was a struggle.

Plodded on, no mistakes and just about made it to the finish before collapsing.

Saw an oldish woman cross the wall by 1 and quite a few people ran across the OOB tarmacced playground by finish but at least I didn't cheat.

Emitag was good.

Running warm up/down 10:00 [3] 1.3 km (7:42 / km)

Slow jog to the start. Would have gone even slower if I knew the starts were running 10 mins late!

Orienteering race (British relays) 41:58 [4] 5.62 km (7:28 / km) +145m 6:37 / km
slept:5.0 (injured) shoes: inov8 Mudclaw300 Yellow1

British relays at Holmbury. 4.8km men's short leg 2.

Pat came back some way behind the main pack so started out on my own a bit. Went straight through the undergrowth to 3 and caught a few at 4.

Then messed up 5 as couldn't match the vegetation at all. Then not good to 6 as unsure where on the path I needed to cut. Relocated from path below.

Went up cycle track on west to 7 then straight to 8. Should have gone round paths. Another mess on 9. Found gullies but my control, despite description, was a reentrant. Maybe lost 45 s.

Remainder ok but too high into 12. Impressive skid taking turn too fast to 13 and amazed ankle wasn't even jarred.

Very scrappy run and terrain very rough around 7-9 but enjoyed this more than yesterday. Didn't see Pete at all on course but seems I recovered almost all of his 13 minute lead. Pleased to see NGOC beat BOK in the end!

Orienteering race (British Champs) 1:19:54 [3] 10.6 km (7:32 / km) +310m 6:35 / km
(injured) shoes: inov8 Mudclaw300 Yellow1

British champs at Winterfold. 8.4km 21 short course.

Didn't get in to this at all well. The hurried rush to the start meant I was in wrong frame of mind and then finding faults with the map on way to first control got me concerned.

Really struggled getting through the wind blown stuff and ankle really complained right up until I lost feeling in it at around 4. Best route always seemed to be long path rather than straight.

On long leg to 7 tried cutting corners so lost loads of time on what I would have managed going to the bottom of the map and around the paths. Overtaken by Mark but without me to follow he made a huge mess within the circle at 7.

Could feel my foot again after 11. Didn't see best route to 12 and took one that required a lot of thinking. 14 to 15 should have gone straight rather than round.

No real mistakes but terrain too unpleasant for me to be able to run so didn't enjoy this at all. This was my first British champs and had expected there to be some sort of atmosphere. Thought the Briyish was supposed to be something special?

Orienteering - Urban race (Coombe Dingle Urban) 42:41 [3] 8.05 km (5:18 / km) +30m 5:12 / km
slept:6.0 (injured) shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 10 g

Urban race from Coombe Dingle. 5.8km long course.

Still didn't feel like there was any pace in my legs so very slow through first controls around the pitches. Then slow through the hard to read bit.

Took west road route 10-11 as didn't want to jump the stream. Then tired out by now so took it easy for the rest of the course.

Went back on myself 13-14, then up the steps and along the road - the people behind saw me and followed. Along the main road 15-16 rather than down the steps.

Fairly steady for the remainder.

Lovely day to be outside and some good legs to make you think. The amount of running I've done this last week has come as a bit of a shock to my body so rest until Saturday would be good.

Ended the day with a 15 minute shift on download. Think I should be charging contractor rates for this now?
