Orienteering - Urban race (Didcot Urban Race) 1:02:37 [4] 9.77 km (6:25 / km) +35m 6:18 / km
shoes: Saucony ProGrid Triumph 7

An urban race to get me back into orienteering again. Overall fitness is encouraging when compared with the end of the previous two summers.

6.2km course translated in to 9.77km on the ground. Aimed to keep to 10 min miles but started slipping behind after half an hour. Had several short burst of energy at times, and was surprised to be pulling away from surrounding runners - did however mean that I was then leading them into the controls though. Even did the hills (albeit, not really that much climb) quite well today.

A clean run as I spotted all the uncrossable features in enough time to change routes, although I was very close to going the wrong way 13-14.

Got very pissed off with my GPS software tonight as TrailRunner has been buggering about and the Garmin software for Mac is particularly useless. Managed to work out how to upload on to Garmin to find that the web based program does everything that TrailRunner does and more, without telling me to make donations!

Running (Forest of Dean) 1:15:00 [4] 8.0 mi (9:22 / mi) +210m 8:40 / mi
shoes: Saucony ProGrid Triumph 7

A run to cheer me up after 2 weeks of jury service.

"Ran" around the cycle paths of the Forest of Dean, from Cannop Cross down to Mallards Pike Lake, then back up to Dilke Hospital, being cutting across Crabtree Hill and then stopping. Because I struggle with the heat/humidity I was, as I normally do, stopping for rehydration breaks after each mile. Took a half hour lunch break between miles 4 and 5.

Times per mile:
1 - 7:43 - 0m climb
2 - 10:33 - 70m climb (a long, long drag for me)
3 - 9:51 - 20m climb
4 - 9:09 - 0m climb
5 - 9:23 - 35m climb
6 - 9:20 - 40m climb
7 - 9:50 - 20m climb
8 - 9:07 - 25m climb

Really misjudged pace at the start, and may have been racing some cyclists and tried (and failed) to keep a steady pace on the big uphill. Miles 3, 4 and 5 seemed to be the most comfortable and I found miles 7 and 8 a real struggle.

Having thought I wanted to stop at mile 6, and cut back along the Spruce Ride, I think I've learned that I'm stubborn enough to ignore my pains when I want to. Stopped when I did because of blisters on my left foot and my back complaining more of carrying a rucksack. Still, I think I probably could have done another 2 miles at around 9:30/mile.

Not very quick at all by many standards, but for me it is very good to be able to maintain such a fast pace for so long. Probably about time to see how much of that pace I lose by going off the tracks...
