Orienteering - Night race (Harvester Leg 1) 1:17:01 [4] 11.1 km (6:56 / km) +165m 6:28 / km
slept:2.0 weight:69.6kg (injured) shoes: inov8 Roclite295 (2)

Prepared for run by ripping my finger open - result being that I couldn't bend left hand and struggled to hold map.

Leg 1. 8.6km. Started out safe following paths, then when I couldn't overtake Mark S in the sand cut through the heather. Didn't take good route to 4 so suspect I lost a bit of time.

Mess on 5 (2 mins) - control was really hidden I was a couple of feet away and didn't see it. Parallel error on 6 but soon realised as veg was mapped fairly well - 1 min. Then lost another min in the circle in the 8ft tall bracken.

Another minute off on 7 - disoriented by bracken and went wrong way, relocated quickly.

90s lost at 8 - again was right next to control but didn't see it due to it being hidden. Found the other elongated knoll and worked back.

On way to 11 turned off one junction too early, realised immediately and went through bracken to recover. Bearing at the end a bit odd so had to go in from behind - found the form line depression first but the control hole was very small and didn't seem in the right place in relation to the bigger one. 30s? Bottom route to 12.

Half way between 13 and 14 right foot slipped off a stone and pulled it a bit too much - still hurting this morning/afternoon. Limped for about 2 mins until the pain subsided enough to try and run again.

Didn't do the urban controls very well. Maybe lost another minute towards the end.

Could well have lost 11 mins or so out there. Still fairly happy with my run.

Running 1:31:52 [3] 12.7 km (7:14 / km) +190m 6:44 / km
slept:4.0 weight:70.3kg shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 10 g

Run with Duncan and Chris S to try and cheer myself up.

Exploring bits of Stoke Bishop. Found an interesting private estate off Old Sneed Road. May have circumvented the barricades around Hiatt Baker by sneaking through one of the buildings...

Saw a very small badger in the nature reserve - never seen one in the daylight before.

Not very quick with lots of stopping, and walking most of the way up the gorge.

Didn't get home until very late - think the last time I was out later was after the Harvester last year, so sure I'll be sufficiently rested for tonight...

Orienteering - Urban race (NGOC Urban Score) 1:01:00 [4] 12.91 km (4:44 / km) +30m 4:40 / km
slept:4.0 weight:71.2kg shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 10 g

NGOC urban score around Pittville Park in Cheltenham. Double sided map - 1 side 1:5000 ISOM (not ISSOM) spec, the other 1:12,500 stick diagram with bits of yellow and green.

Route S-9-10-18-19-17-28-30-21-11-12-13-20-23-22-29-27-24-26-25-2-3-4-14-16-15-8-5-6-7-F. Missed 1 (10 points) and was 1 min late.

Leaving the start was caught out by several fatal mapping errors - a dead end had been obscured by overprinted "crossing point" text, then crossable fence was uncrossable, then underpass wasn't mapped right so I didn't see it - so had lost 90s by the first control.

Soon worked out what was and wasn't mapped. 21 very dodgy as in a field that wasn't mapped as yellow when others were.

Only order of controls I would have changed would be to do 3-14-4-16, and, if map was correct from start, would have got 7 and 8 on the way out. Should then have been comfortably enough time for me to clear had I done this.

Apart from getting a pretty good 10k time (for me), the WIP Ross map going down well and John Fallows possibly being injured has been a pretty crap day.

Running 22:01 [5] 5.01 km (4:24 / km) +20m 4:19 / km
slept:2.0 weight:71.5kg shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 10 g

From home up to Little Stoke park and then around until 5k. Wanted to do more but was pretty dead - combination of lack of sleep/food/drink/warm up, bit too much heat and a bit of a cold from the weekend. Still, 22 mins wasn't too bad...

Very slow jog back. Left knee feels like it needs some stretching.

Orienteering race (Broughton Burrows) 1:12:58 [4] 9.18 km (7:57 / km) +100m 7:32 / km
slept:2.5 weight:71.8kg shoes: inov8 Mudclaw300 Yellow1

7.2km brown course.

I like sand dunes but can't say I enjoyed this. Finished so frustrated with my run that I thought it best not to talk about it.

Overshot 1 - getting used to scale and contours +1 min. Ok to 2 and caught Joe up by here but didn't translate contours at all well. Purposely slowed down so that Joe wouldn't feel any pressure from me being just behind. Saw him on and off in the distance until he was half way to 7.

3-4-5 all clean, read contours well. Then 6 - got through the bushes fine then the bearing went off a bit - should have gone where Joe went - lost 2 mins or so working from the big depression by the fence to the east. 7 - again bearing went slightly out after the bushes. Lost 2-3 mins relocating and couldn't match the contours at all - work with distances from the fence.

8 - 1 min lost as my attackpoint did not exist on the ground. Was the easiest control on the course too, lost 1 min due to poor route choice too. 9 and 10 both clean.

11 a complete disaster. Seemed to have caught Joe again but got pretty much into the control circle and then couldn't line up the contours at all. Found control 229 where I was expecting to find my own. In the end had to find control 12 and work back up. Good 4 mins lost.

13 - went west and then on edge of control circle found a big unmapped patch of bare sand and assumed it to be the bare sand just west of the circle. Went to the east and had to fight through 8 ft deep bushes to climb up only to find that the sand was unmapped and the control was just behind it. Good 2 mins lost.

14 clean. 15 cleanish - thought I was taking a good north bearing but control to my left. Tried to go past 6 to 16 and succeeded. Found control exactly where I expected to. Then no major troubles until the finish.

In total about 14 mins or so of mistakes, and 3 mins I would say weren't wholly my fault. To make my feelings for the day even worse have found a tick eating me for the first time.

With three bad runs in a row think I'm now back to being fed up with orienteering again...

slept:3.5 shoes: inov8 Mudclaw300 Yellow1

Leg 1 for NGOC Wan.

S-249-255-253-252-248-246-244-250-F

Took a straight route to 1 and got it fairly cleanly, too far north at 2. Was still at the front of the pack with Ben Doherty at 3 but then Dane overtook and went off into the distance.

Lost 30s or so on 244 as stopped one re-entrant too early.

Orienteering race (2x2 Relays Leg 2) 27:03 [4] 4.09 km (6:37 / km) +50m 6:14 / km
(injured) shoes: inov8 Mudclaw300 Yellow1

Leg 2: S-242-234-232-243-245-247-254-250-F

Took fence route into 1 - got it fine. 2 and 3 both easy. On way to 4, lost the path out and got confused in the dunes. Ended up relocating from 300m away but lost 5 mins in the process.

Messed up 245 having ran past it earlier - seemed only visible from the other direction. Bang on to 247 and 254 but in the effort to make up lost time ran a bit too hard into the wind and pulled my ankle when contouring around a dune. Limped for a bit then slow jogged the rest of the way back.

At least Joe had a pretty good run to bring us in somewhere above the bottom.

Orienteering race (Cefn Bryn) 29:56 [3] 4.38 km (6:50 / km) +150m 5:50 / km
slept:4.5 shoes: inov8 Mudclaw300 Yellow1

3.9km green course.

Taking it very slow and steady, particularly through the rocky bits to save ankle. Apart from a small miss at one, and not taking the best route choice to 12 (my interpretation of the map did not align with the ground) I think I did everything bang on perfect.

Orienteering - Urban (Portishead urban) 40:06 [4] 7.88 km (5:05 / km) +15m 5:02 / km
slept:4.5 weight:71.7kg shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 10 g

BOK urban in Portishead. 6.2km long course.

Good course with lots of routechoice - best course of action was to make a decision quickly as there was never much in it between two routes. Going steadily but slowly as really struggling in the 27 C heat. Needs a storm to freshen the air - hopefully before and not during the weekend...

Was clean - overshot one junction as forgot 1:4000 scale meant everything came quickly, but only went a couple of paces too far. Found a few things on the map that I didn't think were quite right but thought a fair compromise had been made to keep the map legible. Felt like it was a bit long for an evening race but at 8km running distance, it was fine.

Assume the woman at 20 just wanted to moan and didn't remove the control?

Certainly a good area for an urban.

Note

Created some sneaky new Strava segments along the river between Swineford and Keynsham - think it's only gone back 12 months so far but could be a couple of KOMs to make up the numbers after all the Portishead/Clevedon/Blaise ones I had have now been lost...

slept:5.0 weight:72.5kg shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 10 g

BOK training run from Keynsham. Out to Upton Cheney and North Stoke before coming back along the river.

Not running well for most of it - combination of heat and muggyness, and not having recovered from last Thursday given I was in bed unwell through the weekend.

Good pace along the river towards the end - matched Ifor before he gave up and me and Michael sprinted on ahead. Shame about all the gates as found it hard to get going again after.

Orienteering - Urban race (NGOC Longlevens) 1:01:40 [5] 12.66 km (4:52 / km) +15m 4:51 / km
slept:5.0 weight:71.9kg shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 10 g

NGOC Sprint + Score at Oxstalls and Longlevens. 70 minutes allowed to do the lot.

Very rushed at the start - didn't allow for the 40 minutes it took to get from Patchway to Aztec West or the lack of useful road signs in Gloucester (for A38, read low bridge, for M5, read "Gloucester Business Park") although a 20 minute blast up the motorway recovered a bit of time :-)

Took all of my frustration out on the sprint - no mistakes - and kept running hard for the first few of the score course. Not the best route but wanted the convoluted loops at the beginning rather than when I was really tired at the end otherwise I would have just skipped them.

S-8-7-18-1-9-27-19-25-24-22-13-23-20-3-17-16-26-29-14-15-12-6-5-2-28-10-21-11-30-4-F

7 an awkward control to get so glad I got it early, but probably should have started with 4, 2 and 5 before 8, and then jumped from 6-28 towards the end.

Lost 20s on wrong road at 2, 30s on 21 looking for control and another 15s looking for 30. Kept fast for the first 5k (about 23 mins) and then slowed for a bit before getting into a steady pace. Seems to have been my fastest orienteering pace ever tonight.

One of only two to clear the map in time. Easy victory over Joe G and Burley.

Orienteering - Urban race (Westbury urban) 43:16 [3] 7.98 km (5:25 / km) +50m 5:15 / km
slept:5.0 weight:72.9kg shoes: inov8 Mudclaw300 Yellow1

BOK Urban at Westbury. 5.7k long course.

Right shin and ankle still not feeling great so started out fairly easy. Exited 3 to the south before noticing the marginally better northern route. Went north 8-9 when south probably better. Should have gone through graveyard to 10.

Wondered about going north route 11-12 but south must have been shorter. Fairly sensible routes and planned exit from 16 in advance. Hard to tell the best route 17-18 but I took a better route than Keith and knocked a few seconds off his lead. Lost a couple of mins on 22 looking on the earth bank, but others lost more. Went through the grass for most of 24-25, not so fun.

Not a bad area. Very well planned course.

Orienteering - Urban race (Poundbury urban) 47:34 [4] 9.42 km (5:03 / km) +70m 4:52 / km
slept:5.5 weight:72.5kg shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 10 g

Poundbury urban. 7.5km Men's Open course.

Ankle and shin really been playing up since Ashton Court - hurting to the point where I didn't think I could run in the morning, so glad to get round ok.

Had an ok start but was bored in the middles legs 6-13. Took east route into 6, then west side to 7. Had planned all the way up to 15 on the way. Went into 12 from the west so didn't have any trouble and knew to go round the top to 14, but based on other people there was next to nothing in it.

Last bit in Poundbury itself was a slog but kept in close contact with the map and didn't go wrong. Didn't see the alleyway route to 19 which probably cost me 15-20s.

Good fun. Less than 4 mins down on Mark, and only 10 down on Adam/Geoff so must have been a fairly good run for me. May take some getting used to the heat again.

Orienteering race (Ashton Court) 49:59 [3] 6.52 km (7:40 / km) +140m 6:55 / km
slept:5.0 weight:72.5kg shoes: inov8 Mudclaw300 Yellow1

BOK evening event at Ashton Court.

Shins have been playing up since the weekend and lack of a run yesterday meant I was still a bit stiff. Ankle not in a good mood at all and tried to twist about 10 times on the course - mostly because I couldn't see what was under my feet.

Lost 90s at 3 trying to find a way in that wasn't shoulder high nettles. Lost 4 mins at 4 because it was mapped wrong - knew I had turned in too late and didn't find it so turned back when it was quite a bit further on.

Went out of 12 the wrong way and then had to go the long way round - probably a minute. Then lost another 2 mins on 16 - went down the crag on the line but going straight out of it ended up some way south.

New map looks good but think the old one was better. Another orienteering race I really did not enjoy. Generally getting fed up with life at the moment and unless I start the O again soon I'm going to have to find something else to do with my time instead.

Note

Was going to do the BOK run tonight but stupidly thought 45 minutes would be enough time to get there. Sadly didn't allow 35 minutes for getting from Cribbs to Avonmouth and as it was already 7.15 by the time the Avonmouth slip road came saw no point in carrying on.

Orienteering (BOK Wavering Down) 1:27:25 [3] 10.39 km (8:25 / km) +335m 7:15 / km
slept:4.5 weight:72kg shoes: inov8 Mudclaw300 Yellow1

8.4km brown course.

Don't like Wavering Down at all after the last day event we had there but going to 1 was ok. Began to deteriorate after that though - got to the thin strip of open between the two thickets next to 2, thought it was so overgrown to be the wrong place, went further down looking for a gap and found some steep bare rock that I knew I hadn't the grip to descend. Result was that I went back to the "gap" and crawled through hawthorn and brambles - took 1.5 mins to do 30m.

Lost heart after this and got more fed up by the scrambling up bare rock, fighting with undergrowth and being not at all convinced the dark green was unrunnable at all. Found an extra large depression just east of 5. Knew where 6 was but got stuck in undergrowth getting to it. 7 in the wrong place relative to the thicket - think the map is wrong as it was the nearest crag, just not anywhere near as close as it should be.

Then spent 3 minutes at 9 - because the crag was in the wood on the map I stupidly fought my way in and expected to find it somewhere in the wood. It was in the open and (along with the crag) very definitely the wrong side of the veg boundary to what was mapped.

Completely fed up by now, punched 10 then did another lap of Crook Peak and then head back via the easy controls to try and get my money's worth.

Never been convinced that the lower half of the slope had been mapped well. Print quality shockingly awful (green and yellow were pretty much the same - worse quality than the night o maps that Ifor apologised for) so wasn't really much chance I was going to enjoy this. Should have stuck with my original plan of arriving then just going for a run and bypassing the orienteering.

Orienteering race (End of Season Score) 56:59 [4] 8.8 km (6:29 / km) +210m 5:47 / km
slept:6.0 weight:73.3kg shoes: inov8 Mudclaw300 Yellow1

NGOC End of Season Score on Cleeve Hill (bottom end).

Route S-10-9-8-7-6-12-20-22-21-23-25-24-17-16-15-14-13-19-18-11-5-4-3-2-1-F

Started out in a good group and decided to hang on to John Embrey for as long as possible. Sadly he was led the wrong way into 8 and then dithered over where to go after 6 and 12 whereas I had my route planned out. Led the pack to 20 and 22.

Didn't like descent from 22 to 21 direct and the climb up to 21 wasn't nice either. Small loss on 23 but could work off the crags fine. Then realised I had completely ballsed up the route-choice as had assumed there would be controls on the top left corner. Descended out from 23 well but by now was very tired and slowing. Clean to 16 and 15 and seemed to lose no time on those who skipped 16.

Very slow finding the path, and descending to 19 and could barely walk up from 18! Set at time limit of 51 minutes for reaching control 4 before heading to 5 and just made it. From there on was a hard run to the finish.

Nice the clear the map for once - a lot of people seemed surprised that I had, although I think I only came 6th overall (pre-handicap). Pleased to be only a minute down on Joe G after the amount my calf has been hurting since Wednesday - can't let him think he's that much better than me...

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/321182410

Think the best route (maybe a bit longer but misses most of the climb) would be same as I did for most, but from 22-16 should have done 22-25-24-17-23-21-16
