Running (BOK Training Run) 1:06:15 [3] 10.31 km (6:26 / km) +150m 5:59 / km
shoes: Addidas Swoops

BOK run from the Barn at Nailsea.

Lots of uphill to start with and wasn't very quick. Pete and Ifor picked up the pace on the streets of Nailsea at the end and it was quite a struggle to keep up.

Have found a temporary fix for torch (now I've found that the extension cable is the problem) - tieing it around my neck, but it gets uncomfortable over a long period.

Running (UBOC Training) 44:02 [3] 8.06 km (5:28 / km) +75m 5:13 / km
shoes: Saucony ProGrid Triumph 7

Took the afternoon away from my tax paper and promised to go and see how I compared to UBOC's new crop of fast runners. Sadly, none of them braved the slight drizzle so it turned into a jog with just me and Charlotte.

Taking it quite easy after the busy weekend. Wanted to get up to 5 miles so left Charlotte and the water tower and carried on around the Downs a bit to get to the distance. It is a starting point but I'm pretty sure I could do 5 miles comfortably under 40 minutes.

Passed Alice Butt running the other way by Bristol Zoo - waved my hand a matter of inches in front of her face but she appeared to have her eyes closed and didn't notice.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [3] 1.5 km (10:00 / km)
shoes: Saucony ProGrid Triumph 7

Did a proper warm up and warm down for once as it was cold. Even felt like it was doing some good and not tiring me out. First time in many months I was feeling underdressed but that feeling went away once we started running.

How do you spell "Galoppen"?

Map says "Gallopen"
Results say "Galloppen"
Website says "Galoppen"

Orienteering race (BOK Galoppen) 1:05:29 [4] 8.6 km (7:37 / km) +230m 6:43 / km
shoes: inov8 Roclite295 (1)

Blue course at Wavering Down. Was either 6.9, 7.0 or 7.5 km long depending which bit of paper you read.

Had trouble with a few controls - think 3 was verging on unfair because neither the vegetation nor the rocks were as mapped. Ended up relocating from the small cliff to the north but lost 5 mins or so and by that time everyone else who was also struggling to find it had just spotted it.

Got 5 fine but everyone but Tim Haysom and I seemd to go high and overshoot by a huge amount. Went in a bit too early for 7.

Lost 90s to 2 minutes on 8 as I didn't realise I had gone over two lines of crags. Was overshooting but when I didn't find the control quickly I knew I had gone too far.

No energy for hill up to 12. Straight line route to 13 poor - should have gone to the trig point and then down - 1 min lost. Took a wide route around the gorse to 14 as a result. Was quite a nice fun finish with John and Alison Simmons close by and David Hunt almost within reach.

I think the parking team did a pretty good job given the circumstances today - good to see they were still smiling at the end. Still haven't read the sheet of paper that Caroline gave me on the way in...

Running race (Ashton Court Parkrun) 22:40 [5] 5.0 km (4:32 / km) +100m 4:07 / km
shoes: Saucony ProGrid Triumph 7

Much, much better run than last time - but much worse position. Kept above 10kph for pretty much all the uphill, and was only about 30s behind Mark at the half way point.

Into the wind on the "flat" on the way to the turn around and not didn't feel I was going so well as going up. Got overtaken by about 10 people going down the gravel path so upped the pace to maximum speed despite it being rocky underfoot. Got passed by another 5 people on the tarmac but clawed one of the places back and thought I had quite a strong finish.

Continues (after last week too) to support my theory that wearing a Westbury Harriers top makes you not only look like a good runner but does actually improve your running! Got a few cheers on the way round too.

Orienteering - Night race (SARUM Collingbourne Wood) 50:46 [3] 5.27 km (9:38 / km) +80m 8:57 / km
shoes: Addidas Swoops

S-52-41-59-44-73-80-53-50-74-39-54-40-72-F

Very nice and runnable wood - although I thought differently when finding myself in brashings going to my first control.

Was going quite well, but ended up in the wrong place both times I looked for 50 - but it's not obvious from the GPS.

Torch decided to die completely in the middle of a big bramble patch - would come on when plugged in, but cut out almost immediately or start flashing SOS in morse code. Decided after 2 or 3 mins of fiddling to return to assembly on the back up torch.

270 points I think. If torch didn't die 40 mins in, I think I would have stood a good chance at getting a further 120 points and that would have put me very close to Ifor.

http://connect.garmin.com/player/131082851

Think/hope problem with torch is due to one of the connections having come undone and got damp. Will test if it's working on Tuesday.

Running - off road (BOK Training Run) 1:03:59 [3] 10.13 km (6:19 / km) +200m 5:45 / km
shoes: Saucony ProGrid Triumph 7

BOK training run around Ashton Court.

Unusually started off quite well rather than struggling to keep up, and thought I was running ok (better than last week at least) most of the time. Still struggling on the downhills - mostly due to caution as one was rocky and leaf covered and the other was slippery with mud.

Shins have been feeling a bit better today and were fine when out running.

Note
(rest day)

Shins been hurting all day today - were fine yesterday. Consoling myself with the gain in ranking points - only 100 points or so from the top 1000! Have gone up 200 points (and 200 places) in the last 9 months so there is still hope that I will get there

Orienteering race (BADO Pamber Forest) 1:06:40 [4] 9.2 km (7:15 / km) +60m 7:01 / km
shoes: Addidas Swoops

Blue course. Generally ok but a few mistakes made through wrong paths, wrong route choices, very hidden controls etc.

Overshot 4 as couldn't see it, or the tiny feature from a distance of a couple of yards. Long route choice to 5 to avoid brashings. Straight line to 6, battling through head high bracken only to find a nice path along the fence...

Lost a good few minutes trying to find 8, whilst within the circle. Found it just as a group of at least 10 appeared and then ran with them until 17. 17 I think was unfair - a small depression marked on the edge of a patch of "broken ground" - there was no definition of where one ended and the next began.

Went to 18 on autopilot so found myself heading down the wrong path. Corrected with difficulty as my rubbish swoops couldn't provide sufficient grip for me to gross a big earth bank. Rest ok.

Not too disappointed with today's run - 6 min or so of mistakes. First time of trying out a thumb compass and having map in left hand: will take some getting used to.

Running - off road race (Worcester Parkrun) 21:51 [4] 5.0 km (4:22 / km) +30m 4:15 / km
shoes: inov8 Roclite295 (1)

Stopped off for worcester parkrun on way to see parents. Didn't try too hard as wanted to save some energy for the WNL. Everyone started off fast but I was comfortably overtaking them on the first lap.

Towards end of first lap a small 12 year old girl overtook me so my aim then was to match her pace for the remainder and go for the sprint finish - started 500 yards from the finish.

Knocked half a minute off my previous PB and could quite easily have gone faster if I had wanted. GPS says 4.9km as they now better mark the route (was 4.85km before). They are still adamant that it is 5km though and as it's a race I'm not going to do extra loops to make up the distance...

http://connect.garmin.com/player/129680900

Noted when stretching beforehand that my right ankle still feels a little unhappy from the "safe" stream crossing point at the November Classic. Didn't give up on me this time but had been threatening to earlier in the week.

Orienteering - Night race (WNL Frith Wood) 55:42 [3] 4.0 km (13:56 / km) +185m 11:19 / km
shoes: inov8 Roclite295 (1)

Didn't expect to be doing well on Frith Wood. It's fair to say it met my expectations.

S-48-49-52-56-58-65-57-53-68-66-43-41-F - 230 points

Brashings among the worst I've encountered when orienteering. The first four controls were un-runnable, same for 65.

Lost time on 49, not helped by control description and contours being wrong. 52 in wrong place but not a problem as on the path. Big time loss on 56 - not happy with the map here when the vegetation is completely different to as mapped. Much as though I shouldn't be harsh on mapper Brian Hughes, I don't think "Vegetation mapped with broad brush. Use to aid route choice rather than for fine navigation" is good enough for night-o.

2 minutes or so lost on 58 - entirely my fault I suspect. Got 65 and 57 fine but think the platform is mapped in the wrong place relative to the path. Was pleased to find 68 and 66 without any problems and this bit was probably the most runnable bit of forest I went through.

Not the best route tonight, but as I knew I'd do badly whatever it wasn't worth going to the south end of the map. Think 10th place was as good as I'd have got anyway.

Running (BOK Training Run) 1:05:08 [4] 11.31 km (5:46 / km) +100m 5:31 / km
shoes: Saucony ProGrid Triumph 7

Struggling tonight - every time we came to an uphill I was down to pretty much walking pace. Coupled with the standard struggling to keep up for the first half it meant I had to cut out the odd corner just to stay in touch with the others.

Pace on the flat much better in the second half (as always seems to be the case) but I really had to push it on Monk's Park Road to keep up with Charles, Ifor and Rob.

Few plusses - nice to be off road again, and despite it feeling terrible the pace was a bit quicker than these Tuesday nights normally are.

Negatives - was the victim of a very vicious and unprovoked attack by a bramble; the most bloody my legs have been since Stoke Bishop.

Now to rest until Saturday night so that I have some energy to compensate for the fact that I can't find any of the paths on the Frith Wood map...

Orienteering race (Devon Galoppen) 1:15:28 [4] 8.94 km (8:26 / km) +215m 7:32 / km
shoes: inov8 Roclite295 (1)

6.9k 200m climb Blue on Holne Moor

Quite technical course, made more challenging by the mist coming down for half of it. Spent almost all of the course on my own, with nobody in sight for getting on half of it.

Slow in to 1. Think I made a mess of 2 but can't be sure. Horrifically ballsed up 3 as my bearing was out - Jackie made the same mistake. 4-5-6 all ok!

Got into circle of 7 ok, but I think the control description was misleading/wrong - I was in the southernmost gully and the control was in the middle one! Bearing slightly out at 8 so relocated from line of pits south of control.

10 and 11 found by luck - for 11 I'd gone the wrong way to what I wanted so to just guess where to go worked well. Terrain around 13/14 awful but controls found fine.

Big big miss on 15 - bearing totally wrong, but it seems that everybody else did that too - was a good 200 yards east of the control, probably east even of 16... Recovered quite quickly. Remainder fine but unhappy with mapping of thickets at 17.

A good 10 mins of mistakes today, but was 10th of 45 finishers when we left. Very enjoyable course even though I did make a huge mess of it.

Running race (Ashton Court Parkrun) 23:38 [5] 5.0 km (4:44 / km) +100m 4:18 / km
shoes: Saucony ProGrid Triumph 7

Didn't feel fully recovered from Thursday and really struggled with the hill.

30s down on last time at the half way point but didn't lose any more time on the return.

Thought I was going down much better than last time but just had to ease off a bit on the steep bit.

Am still pretty sure that I ought to be able to do a 22:30 without much further improvement in fitness.

Running warm up/down 5:00 [3] 0.5 km (10:00 / km)

Tried warming up since people keep telling me it's a good idea. Result was that I was tired out before I started the run...

Running hills (Westbury Harriers) 1:00:26 [5] 9.32 km (6:29 / km) +120m 6:06 / km
shoes: Saucony ProGrid Triumph 7

Another chance to try Westbury Harriers training to justify joining.

Back in the old/slow group - the next group up was quite a jump - back on the same hill as last time.

6 reps of 150m with 15m climb. Was quite consistent on 38s despite varying amounts of holdups due to other runners and slippery leaves. Was expecting to burn out pretty quickly so surprised that I finished about as fast as I started.

Did seem pretty dead when coming back along Canford Lane afterwards - was all I could do to keep Caroline Potter in sight let alone keep up with her!

Note

My mobile phone is brilliant in every way except for it telephoning more people on its own than I do. Apologies to Tim/Laura Britton who appears to have been tonight's victim.

Running (BOK Training Run) 58:23 [3] 10.22 km (5:43 / km) +120m 5:24 / km

BOK Training Run from the Windmill in Portishead.

As seems to be normal, didn't really get going for the first half - forcing myself to keep up with Charles and Pete for the uphill, but was fine on the flat and for the last bit of uphill.

Didn't feel very well in the pub afterwards but suspect that is because my body has now been conditioned to not eating large meals.

The one road closure given an interesting route choice for driving home. Was quite happy with mine but I still ended up (just) behind Ifor's van.

Orienteering race (November Classic) 1:38:15 [4] 12.89 km (7:37 / km) +75m 7:24 / km
shoes: Addidas Swoops

Never seemed to get into this run, nor did I feel that I was enjoying myself although I did seem to have more energy than yesterday. Struggled to work to bearings with both the compass and emit brik on the same hand and found it very hard to be sure where I was because of the lack of good point features to work from.

Had to relocate from the clearing to the south in order to get into 2. Fine 3-6. Ended up in the clearing to the SE of 7 and compass was telling me the clearing went due north - lost two minutes trying to be sure I was where I wanted to be, would have been easier if the small clearing just to the south had been more visible on the map.

Found a great big thicket where I thought 9 should be and assumed it to be the one that breaks the control circle to the south. Spent 4 minutes going around, relocating off a gate to find that the thicket was where the fence corner N of the control was.

10-14 ok. Thought 15 was a bit unfair because of the unmapped clearing next to the control but cost me no time. Lost lots of time on 16 getting stuck in brambles finding all sorts of ditches and gullies that weren't on the map.

Did something to my ankle on the "safe" stream crossing point (there was a 6 inch tall step in the tarmac beneath the water) and paused to get the ankle working again. Then came to a left turn and assumed it to be my path - it wasn't and probably cost me another 4 mins from extra distance. On the plus side, my attackpoint into 18 was bang on despite there being no reference point.

Small loss on 19 and hated having to go through forest fight on the run in. I'm sure BOF event guidelines (for ranking events at least) require the final leg to be taped as the finish has no control description.

Lost a good 20 minutes out there.

Orienteering race (NGOC L2 - Mallards Pike S) 1:07:19 [4] 7.46 km (9:01 / km) +245m 7:45 / km
shoes: inov8 Roclite295 (1)

Quite a nice course. The first time I've run on the south part of Mallards Pike since my first "real" orienteering back in 2007. Seemed to think the map had gone a bit strange - between 9 and 10 and 15-16 there were a lot more contour lines on the map than height change on the ground. First event I've seen to adhere to this new regulation of printing the event number on the maps.

Slow to 1 because of brashings and getting used to lack of grip. Track route to 2 because of poor speed on terrain - didn't bank on the control being some way further south than was mapped.

Ended up running with a Gordano lad from 4 to pretty much the finish, and, I think, Nick Dennis from 4 to 12. Could have turned into a procession but generally people in Gordano tops go the wrong way so I knew better than to follow...

Didn't pick a good entry off the track into 11, could have done 13 much better and thought 15 was too high. Lost 2 or 3 seconds on the run in because of slow people not getting out of the way.

http://connect.garmin.com/player/126586164

Spoke to a good few WNL regulars today. All understanding re Ashton Court. Having the chance to see David Palmer, Pat Mcleod and Pete Ward seems to have clarified that the Brierley WNL will not be happening at Brierley. Not as much opposition to the suggestion of going south and using Stock Hill as I had thought.

Thursday Nov 3, 2011 #

Note

BOK WNL fixture update:

12th November - Ashton Court - access refused by ranger
21st January - Brierley - area forfeited by Mark Dyer and Mike Forrest for use by NGOC on same day
10th March - Silk Wood - no organiser

Going well...
