Event: OK Nuts

Orienteering race (OK Nuts Hankley and Elste) 1:17:40 [4] *** 11.4 km (6:49 / km)
spiked:23/26c

Cor, we were lucky with the weather! Started at intensity 5 as this was a mass start race but eased back a bit after big mistake at 17. First three controls were a bit of a procession tbh, and I only glanced at the map to make sure the pack was going roughly the way I wanted to go. Was OK through butterflies on Elstead but found going hard in the heather and knew that my rubbish speed in terrain was costing me. Was onto third map after about 35 mins and was OK through 1 to 3. Then, leaving 3 in haste, started to navigate from 4 (it was an identical feature) and got really confused when I hit a path junction. Started to take cues from other runners and got a heather ride confused with indistinct path about 40m from the b****y flag so backtracked pointlessly. Probably lost four to five minutes and all those I'd been running with. Binned about 60 more secs after not taking time to read tracks and contours near 8 and just running away from the flag randomly at 11 without checking map. Poor result but enjoyable run on quality area and back not good but not bad either. Still necking ibuprofen though.

Muddy footpath run from Jan's instead of Petworth Park as flooding had closed roads.
