orienteering 1:00:00 [3] 2.0 mi (30:00 / mi)
weight:167lbs shoes: Falcon VJ - Footlok

The map and course was beyond my ability to navigate, even slowly. Frankly I'd just be sour-grapesing to say much about it. I did find the first control in a reasonable (slow but careful) time, but the information-overload within the 2nd control circle (8 cliffs of varying sizes plus some contour lines) had me unable to figure out what I was looking for. After 40 minutes of wandering, finding someone else's control and general despair, I QUIT, hoping I could find my way to the finish.
So, I finished up the much-anticipated U.S. Champs/N.A. Champs weekends with a colossal FAIL; and I'm not able to think much about the positive right now. The winning time in my class, my course, was at 1:51 and change, or over 26 min. per km. This was Tony Federer, again, a fine orienteer. I am thinking that the courses were unreasonably difficult, at least for us old folks. I realize how whiny this sounds. Maybe I'll delete/edit some of it later.

Nice course, nice day - a little drizzle - and an OK performance. Not, however, a confidence-builder, since I had difficulty with route choice on the one long control, #7. I ignored trails (I know, I know) and went through some awful downfall areas (clearly marked on the map), added some unnecessary climb and lost about three minutes. This would have been enough to win the day, but nemesis Tony Federer beat me by under three minutes. Nevertheless, a second place in the NA's was not bad. However, the trouble with the long leg did NOT set me up for the next day.

Sprint relay. I'm just not very good at sprints. Had plenty of energy, weather was coolish drizzle and no excuses. Just don't seem to be able to think fast enough. Several errors including a 180. Lost 5 - 6 minutes.

Day Two. Extremely humid. Again great map and courses. Worked a little harder, tried to give the day away in my class, but no takers. So I managed a win and a two-day total time win. Happy with effort - but acknowledge that it will not be good enough for the North Americans next weekend. Good time. Of to Fiona, Justin and Avery's for three nights. Probably lost 3 - 4 minutes.
