Running warm up/down (Road) 10:00 [3] 2.0 km (5:00 / km) +6m 4:56 / km
shoes: Inov8 Oroc 280s

Warm up for winter classic. 1 lap of Karori Park up and down

Orienteering race (Middle) 30:00 [5] **** 2.9 km (10:21 / km) +180m 7:54 / km
spiked:16/18c shoes: Inov8 Oroc 280s

Winter Classic map 1. Was first back but I didn't realize until afterwards which is a good thing because I probably would have lessened the pace. Don't have any splits unfortunately because it was clipcards

1 Strait across the field and up the path. Past the clearing and in on the left. Across the field me and Tim were racing and we were first up the bank and I was first to 1.
2 I got out of the control fast but when I started going up the stream the area marked as run was actually felled pines. Everyone else was running along the bank so I lost time being the guinea pig.
3 Followed the stream up and to the left at the main junction. When I hit this I climbed above the stream which was good because thats how high the control was.
4 Strait up the stream and onto the spur.
5 Brigham Watson left me at this stage which was worrying because I thought I'd gone the wrong way. However, I convinced myself I went the right way so I wouldn't follow and then I was at the control. Saw Rachel, Stuart and George at this stage but they didn't look like they were going very fast.
6 Headed directly north until I hit the track. I was going to go north west but there were too many pines. Followed this up until I hit the first bend and ran through the blackberry onto the main track. Ran SW and then up the single trail until I hit the next junction, where I ran in to the right. Didn't climb quite high enough but I found it quite quickly. Saw Magnus punch just as I arrived and leave.
7 out to the single trail and up the cliff. Beat Magnus on this 30m leg uphill.
8 I planned to leave and run fast away to loose Magnus. However, I didn't focus on where I was going exactly, just the cleanest route amongst the fallen trees. Ended up on the spur with the track, so I followed this down but there were heaps more tracks than shown which was super confusing. A long way down the hill I realized I should probably work out where I was going and realized I'd way overshot 8. I then had to relocate off tracks that were not marked, but after a bit of aimless running I spotted a control so I ran over to it and thankfully it was mine.
9 Down to a track which lead me strait in to the control. Jonathan Wood told me to calm down when I punched it which was funny.
10 Down the hill, down the track and then into the forest on a bearing. The bearing is pointless though because it is so hard to hold when there is so much crap on the ground to go around.
11 Ran strait, along the track to the junction and then up and in. Saw mum at the junction but I don't think she saw me.
12 I ran up to the main track, north along it until the earth bank was gone and then ran up to the ridge. Overshot the depression slightly but I quickly found the flag.
13 Up to the ridge, along the track and then along the bank to the storm water outlet.
14 Strait down the re-entrant and across the bank.
15 Almost took the wrong the track but I quickly realized and punched the control.
16 Strait to the pivot again.
17 West to the track and then down it and across the grass. Was running pretty fast now because the speed in the forest was real slow and I had a lot of energy.
18 Strait along the bank which was real slippery and felt I was about to slip into the stream many times.
F Strait

Had a Leppin at the map change which made me feel great. Everyone says you're meant to have them with water but I didn't and i was sweet.

Orienteering race (Long Distance) 1:25:51 [5] *** 8.2 km (10:28 / km) +605m 7:39 / km

Winter Classic map 2. Ended up winning by 36:18 ahead of Tim, and a further 3:40 ahead of Kyle.

1 From the Karori Park Clubrooms I took a left and ran up the road, taking the second right into the bush. Took the left hand track and hit the wall here. I just had no energy to run uphill and didn't even want to think about the rest of the course. However, the Leppin kicked in slowly and the more I ran the better I felt. When the track left the valley and turned left up the hill i followed the ruined fence up to the right and then took the re-entrant into the control.
2 Contoured until I met the bottom of the valley and followed this up until i saw number 2
3 Was going to take the western track around and then up through the forest, but I took the eastern track which was super windy and a dumb idea.
4 Followed the windy track up the ridge, counting bends until I met the junction. Went on a little further and down into the clearing. However, I took the wrong one so I had to go along to the next. The earth here was really slippery and there was a bit of stinging nettle but I managed to punch the control without too much difficulty.
5 Ran up to the drink station and I think I was the first here as all bottles were unopened. Ran along the road and on the second bend I came into the forest. The bush right at the edge was so thick I had to wriggle through but I found the control in the pit alright.
6 Ran up the road further until I saw the open area and then dropped of to the left.
7 Was going to jump the fence and run down to the track but it was a good two meters high and strung entirely from barbed wire. I don't know how that constitutes a passable fence but alright. Ran back up the bank and down the zig zag track. First right and first left, and then down off the bench. Some rogainers having a picnic right by the control so that made it a bit easier to find.
8 Back up to the track and along, then in off a bench again. Some more picnicking rogainers again, what is it with these people, they only have 3 hours not the whole day.
9 I chucked the map in my mouth again and ran strait up the re-entrant and found the flag with no difficulty. Huge catching feature here.
10 Up to the building, and around the track. The single trail leading off this was very indistinct at the opening but I found it alright. Almost dropped in off to the left but I remembered the control was on the track.
11 Up to the road and then to the left. Followed the track past a right and left bend, then inn via the linear clearing. Saw Laura coming out here and freaked out she was on my course so I picked up the pace.
12 Tracks, pretty strait forward
13 I was going to go in off the track bend and down through the white forest, but there was no opening through the fight. Ran down the track and then across the field. Just as I was heading in to the control site I saw Laura and got excited - I was catching her. Didn't use my descriptions as they were on the map and not loose so I lost a little time checking in the ruin and not behind it.
14 Across the field and into the forest, saw the distinctive tree and then spotted the flag. So much crap on the ground here it sucked to run through.
15 Strait down the stream and in at the first re-entrant. The big junction was my catching feature.
16 Sort of took a bearing but it was so hard to hold it through the green. Spotted a flag which turned out to be mine so that was lucky.
17 Ran up from here but went too far to the right and got stuck in the green. Went back down to 16 to relocate and then up again, picking the right route and speeding up the hill. Down the other side and then to the left down the stream. Felt like I had gone too far but I kept going and eventually I arrived.
18 Kept going along the stream, then went up the other re-entrant to the north. Once I crossed the possum trail I took a bearing to the stump, and then carried on towards 18. came out a little low so I ran up and got it. Should have took the higher route around the Parade Ground because it would have been faster running.
19 ran all the way down the re-entrant, north along the single trail to the possum trail. Followed this west until I crossed the shallow re-entrant and there was the control.
20 Continued along this trail and then right and up to the cliff
21 Back down to the trail, along and then up the next, making sure I stayed to the left to take the right one.
22 Strait up and spiked it
23 Up to the track, found a small passage through the black berry and then down the possum trail a little further. Off to the left, down the re-entrant to the single trail and then left to the road. Followed this down to the bottom, with Nick Engleback just behind me which made me run faster as I thought he was on my course. At the bottom I ran across the road and to the left of the private property and in down the driveway, with the flag just behind the buildings.
F Out and across the bridge, then strait.

Lost 10-5 in Monday Nights league B grade. Scored once. When I looked at the score board I thought we were winning 8-5, and i lessened the pace. However, I later realised it was actually the other way round, and they just hadn't changed the score around from the first half, but by then it was too late.
