Orienteering race (Relay) 20:47 [5] *** 4.0 km (5:12 / km) +100m 4:37 / km
spiked:14/16c shoes: Cross country/track spikes

NZSS Relay champs. Started last and had the fastest time altogether. My team with Shamus and Matthew Turner came 2nd behind Napier Boys.

From start to 1 I followed the track past the junction and looked for the hill on the left. Them cut into the forest and lost about 10 seconds faffing about around the other little depressions (1:56)
I then took a bearing to 2, passing to the right of the big hill and over the ridge. Laura was ahead of me at this stage and i ran fast to catch up with her but she took another route (3:02, 1:06)
Took another bearing, stayed on the left of the ridge then as I crossed the track into the green i went to the top of the small hill to make sure where i was. Dropped into the depression and spiked 3 (4:51, 1:49)
Out of the depression, over the ridge and down into 4. Saw Joshua Campbell coming the other way which was funny cos he started before me on the same course (5:30, 0:39)
Took a bearing to the east-west track, ran left, along to the main one then up to the road. Climbed up and sidled to the left of the hill with a clearing. Bearing strait to 5 (8:56, 3:26).
Bearing to 6. Massive catching feature there (9:34, 0:38)
Strait for the 20m to 7 (9:46, 0:12)
On the second low spur i came up to the right. The small hill looked lower than the map showed which made me hesitate but i kept going. Spotted the hill with green on it and hit the control dead-on (11:50, 2:04)
For 9 I ran strait and out of the depression onto the ridge. Saw the low hill to the east of the control then punched it (12:59, 1:09)
I followed the northwest-southeast track to 10 which was a bad idea because it took me to the top of the hill and was extremely sandy. Ran down it and along the bottom of the ridge. When the track turned to the right I kept running and the control was just there on the low hill (15:51, 2:52)
Strait to 11 over the small hill and low ridge (16:39, 0:48)
I recognized the area where 12 was and thought it would be the same site as 7 yesterday but it wasn't. I ran over the hill a little to the left which wasn't too god but not a disaster (17:20, 0:41)
Strait to 13 (18:09, 0:49)
Same to 14 but it was really hard to see through all the toitoi (18:56, 0:47)
Aimed to the right of the hill for 15 then followed it southeast and spiked the control (19:37, 0:41)
Strait to 16 (20:07, 0:30)
Up the track to the finish (20:47, 0:40)

Orienteering race (Long) 39:40 [5] **** 7.0 km (5:40 / km) +200m 4:58 / km
spiked:15/19c shoes: Inov8 Oroc 280s

NZSS Individual. Ran Senior Bows Championship and won by 1:03, with Duncan in 2nd and Bj in 3rd.

From the triangle I picked up the hill on my right, by the track. Then the hill on the left, sidled on the next one on the right and went to the far end of the ridge (1:50)
Ran strait to the hill before 2, went a little to far to the right went going around but soon adjusted and followed the re-entrant on my left to the control (3:55, 2:05)
Took a bearing to the track junction, slightly too far to the right, re-took my bearing and ended up on the next track just north of the crazy stuff, exactly where I aimed for. Ran southeast along the track to the next junction then ran in on a bearing to 3. was about 10m too far to the right but thats ok (10:18, 6:23)
I saw Dominic Melchers so I ran fast to catch him. Spiked 4 (11:44, 1:26)
Ran to the western junction to avoid the steep bank. Ran along the track for about 200m, then cut into the forest. Dom followed my obviously so i picked up the pace to try to loose him, but he hung on, all the way to 6. Ran a little to the left but realized quick, then saw the ridge before the big depression. Followed it to the right then up and into 5 (15:14. 3:30)
Strait towards 6, picked up the hill and ended up on Coast road about 40m to the left of the forestry track heading into the coastal block, exactly where i aimed for. Ran through the forest, crossed the track then up the rough open re-entrant. Followed past the 3 depressions and into 6 (18:26, 3:12)
Ran along the indistinct track up the open spur, past the distinctive tree and over the low hill to 7 (21:03, 2:37)
Strait towards 8 and over the low ridge, past the spectator control and onto the low hill. was a little to right but soon found the control (22:58, 1:55)
Ran through the clearing, up onto the hill and followed the scarp to the right (26:01, 3:03)
Strait to 10 past the ridge (26:40, 0:39)
Aimed to the left of the hill for 11 and into the depression (27:23, 0:43)
Started doing the pivot the wrong way around because the map was folded and i couldn't see the number. However, I saw someone running towards me, checked the map and realized. Ran to the right of the hill and up, but i was a little to the left (29:20, 1:57)
When running towards 13 i never realized I crossed the track, and did the same thing when going to back there for 17. It must have been really indistinct or i wasn't in contact with the ground very well. Saw the big hill past 13 and realized i was close. Then I looked to the right and saw it. Caught Joseph Wood at this stage and stayed with him till 16-17 (30:32, 1:12)
Through the clearing and into the depression to 14 (31:47, 1:15)
Much too far to the left of 15 (50m) but i think that was because i saw another control there and ran to it. To do that leg better I think I could have used the hill to the west of the depression, not the depression itself (33:07, 1:20)
Ran back to 11 for 16. Tried to use the same hill I used to get there when it was 11 but it looked completely different. However, I found it anyway and managed to burn off Joseph after the control (34:28, 1:21)
Ran to the left of the hill when going back to 13 for 17 and saw the low hills with toitoi on it, spiking the control (36:23, 1:55)
Hit the track at the bend, just to the east of the hill, then followed it to Coast rd. Into the control, just up the bank and past the hill. There was another control about 5-10m away which is illegal in a non-sprint event, where they have to be 60m apart. Luckily I chose the right one (38:27, 2:04)
Straight out to the road for 19 and got it fine (39:22, 0:55)
Followed the tape into the finish (39:40, 0:18)
