Running (Forest) 31:00 [2]

O' Shoes, with ~2/3 forest, 1/3 trails. Foot got lightly sore once or twice at ~5-10 minutes so I slowed up a bit. Near end foot was doing pretty good so I tried a few 1-minute sections of moving faster, still trying not to push off toes much. Probably got to ~8min/mile w/o pain.

Since I reinjured myself doing a hard pace (not-race-pace) mile in January, I'm a little hesitant to move fast. But I wanted to do a test to see how hard I may want to push myself at the Short O' this weekend. I still probably won't push off toes (which will cost 10%+) and I'm out of shape, which will probably cost another 10%, so my goal is just being within 50% of the winner (e.g. Waddington.)

Maybe I'll be faster, but it's not worth pushing hard off the just-recovered foot at this point.

Note

Considering how well my foot did at SVO, I'm modifying this (before even implementing it) to get more terrain run/walking in.

Mon: Water Aerobics
Tue: ~Short walk/jog to gym & Weights
Wed: Terrain Walk/Run
Thu: ~Short walk/jog to gym & Weights
Fri: Terrain Walk/Run (or Water Aerobics if Sat. is Terrain Walk/Run)
Sat/Sun: Terrain Walk/Run

-In Pool: R-foot very lightly sore on some hard water running - eased off and disappeared immediately.
-Out of Pool: R-Foot totally fine. L-foot mildly sore on and off in same spot. Probably from weekend overuse/limping. But considering I ran for most of yesterday's course and my feet are as good, if not better, than last week: Yayayayayay!

Light rain and foot mildly sore in parking lot while standing around before the start. Planned to walk whole way, but ended up slow jogging ~20%. Foot totally fine at end.

Friday Apr 25, 2003 #

Other Aerobic (Water Aerobics) 30:00 [3]
(injured)

Foot very lightly sore on and off during exercises and very lightly sore this morning. Nothing really bad though, and it is supposed to rain this afternoon/evening.

Plus I did 5 minutes of shoulder deep water bounce jogging.

Thursday Apr 24, 2003 #

Walking (Grass & Tanbark) 20:00 [1]
(injured)

Good semi-rough ground, and some fast walk/run steps chasing AJ around. Foot a little sore on one running step, but otherwise fine. Foot fine now in evening. Walking barefoot in the house I still need to limp, and turning right corners is still a big limp thing, indoors or even out in shoes.

Strength 7:00 [1]
(injured)

20 Dual Calf raises and then in-the-air ankle work.

Other Aerobic (Water Running) 5:00 [1]
(injured)

At shoulder depth, bouncing off of bottom. (Named "Mid-Water Jog" below... there's got to be a better phrase for this...)
--
As one angle to get toward running, I want to start doing, say, 10-15 minutes of this, 2x/wk, at slowly shallower depths.

Plus, terrain walks 2x/wk (weekend and Wed/Thu)

Plus, good aerobic/anaerobic swimming & water running 2x/wk.

I think I need to redo my schedule:
Sat/Sun: Terrain Walk+
Mon: Water Aerobics
Tue: Swim/Water Run Mod/Hard + Mid-Water Jog
Wed: Terrain Walk + Gym Weights
Thu: Swim/Water Run Mod/Hard + Mid-Water Jog
Fri: Gym Weights

--
Also of note is that for the 5 days or so, the walking pain/convenience scale has tipped to the point where I no longer wear shoes in the house (I'm barefoot again.) For the first few days I had to limp quite a bit to much sure this was nearly pain free. Today this has been nearly pain free despite almost no limping. (Still, I get some pain when turning a corner to the right, while stepping off the right foot.)

ONA 2. Of note, I have started doing calf exercises again. Today I did 20x on both feet with no support from upper body. Foot did a little light burning at some point in evening, but that may have been the walk.

Walking 20:00 [1] 1.0 mi (20:00 / mi)
(injured)

On grass, in blue running shoes. Foot was a little sore, but not too bad.

Note

I had what is likely my last podiatry visit for this exercise:
- No plan for new orthotics unless ramping up activity fails.
- Semi-conflicting advice:
"Take it to the next level" vs. "with all your exercise, imagine me whispering in your ear 'take it easy'..."
- Sprints are hard, so I shouldn't do any of those until I can do lots of normal, easy-pace running with no pain at all.

Walking 30:00 [2]
(injured)

Walking around rocky forest trails and some off-trail, in running shoes. Foot (R-normal spot) would get very lightly tired/sore occasionally, but would recover in seconds if I stopped. Stretched out well before and moderately after.

Other Aerobic 12:00 [2]
ahr:130 (injured)

Pool was closed (not enough bromine !?) and so I did some very slow stair-climber work and arm bike stuff. The stair climber made my foot lightly sore after 4 minutes, and the arm bike made my arms tired, but I wasn't breathing too hard... plus it was dull... blah. So I went for a walk for general foot strengthing.

2 minutes of ankle in the air stretch/exercise (very tiring actually) followed by 25 minutes of footwork (for R and about 10 for L). I was barefoot for this and it only got sore at the end... Pretty good.

As far as walking goes, while in shoes I don't think I limped all day. My foot was only very lightly sore on occasion, with a fast walk across a parking lot as the most noticiable. (Clear & sunny...)

Foot was a little sore this morning (it's raining...) so I did just regular foot work, but quite a lot, while I was working. It was a little sore during the ~10min phase, but then settled down, and now is only very lightly sore after I finished.

Lots of walking and standing at airports and on planes. Foot lightly sore all day.

Since Monday (4 days) I've been wearing my blue running shoes, which don't feel as good as the O' shoes, so it's not too bad considering, but it's not looking strong enough for much Spring O'.

With sub. instructor that made us do a lot more shallow water exercises. My foot was definitely sore on and off during the first 10 minutes or so of bouncing exercises in the pool, but warmed up and wasn't bad during the rest of it. I also did ~5 minutes of foot and ankle exercises under water.

Now, 4 hours later, my foot has a light burn going on. Not great but not really bad. I should do my regular footwork soon before I get in the car to drive to CT (to friends that live closer to West Point.) Hopefully it won't be too bad after the foot work.

Strength (Foot work) 30:00 [1]
(injured)

Oops. Just did normal foot-work today, and then did 10 seconds of 'rolling' at the end. I was working and wasn't really paying attention to my foot exercise.

During the first 5 minutes, it was a little sore, but not much worse than it was before I started. After I stopped it was a little sore too. Maybe I should stretch. Also, the 10 seconds of 'rolling' at the end definitely increased the pain slightly by the end, so 'rolling' is still doing the more realistic (and more painful) thing...

(I think the fairly active water aerobics and/or my more recent level of activity may be worsening the average state of burning/pain..., however it has been rainy for a few days in a row now, so hopefully it's just that ??)

Grasping at straws...

Strength (Gym Weights) 15:00 [2]
(injured)

Most of USOF 1. Still need to do foot, back and stomach.

Walked to and from gym down and up hill twice (left key at home.) Foot a little sore in middle of gym exercises, and when walking around a grocery store the afternoon it was pretty achy and sore from minutes 2-10 or so, but then it got a little better. Back in the house now, mostly sitting it's still got a very light burn/ache going occasionally, but it's not too bad.

Not great either. The optimistic track had me walking a White course this weekend and I'm not there yet. The weather has been cold & windy & overcast and will remain so through Sat. morning. If my foot perks up a lot this weekend then it may be largely weather sensitive, but still, it's not good. Also, on a down though, my great progress last week may have been largely due to the cortisone shot the prior Friday, and the foot muscles themselves may still not be very strong/functioning well... I think the odds of a Billygoat are dropping. Darn, darn darn..

Strength (Foot work) 30:00 [1]
(injured)

Did 15 minutes, and got light strange but uncomfortable tingle at 8 minutes which died off in about 15 seconds. Later did 15 more minutes with no pain during normal exercise, however, I added a modificaiton.

Normal 'Foot Work' exercise (i.e. what I've been doing for 3 weeks): While stilling push down with toe to go up on toe, then pull up toe to go up on heel, up on toe, heel, toe, heel, etc...

New 'Rolling' Foot Work exercise. While sitting in chair, lift whole leg, then put down heel, roll through until weight (of calf) is on toe and push down on toe to help lift whole leg, and repeat continously.

The 'rolling' exercise simulates the walking/running motion better - and is much harder for my foot.

For minutes ~20-29, I spent 10-15 seconds doing rolling and then went back to regular for the rest of the minute. The reason I only did 10-15 seconds per minute is because foot started to hurt by the end of just that much of the more realistic 'rolling' foot work. Fortunately, it would quickly recover when going to 'normal' foot work, without stopping the exercise.

I think that rather than add weight, like I thought I would do a few days ago, I'll try to change more and more of the exercise to this more realistic 'rolling' motion.

Now, later in the evening, it's mostly normal. If anything it's on-and-off lightly tired/stiff. Not really painful or burning at all.

Oh and the L-foot hasn't hurt at all in a couple days. Whew.

And in the big picture plan, prospects indeed seem to be dimming a big on much of any major O' competition this Spring. I'll need to do another look at the Excel sheet before deciding just how hopeless the Spring season is... or isn't... :) :( !!..

Oh and ps, I did some situps, but no back work. Not too bad.

Note

Had a migraine this morning so didn't do much ex. a little walking around the house, and a short walk outside. Foot at near 100% for walking. Almost no pain and no limp thus far today (and it' 3pm.) (Even L-foot is fine, although I did feel it once.)

It could be the combo of cold medicine and Excedrin for my head numbing the pain in my foot?

I think I'll skip the PM weights today so my head recovers more. Gotta drink some more and maybe have some more tea too for faster cold recovery.

Strength 37:00 [1]
(injured)

Normal foot work for 6 min, then 31 min. Very light soreness at ~10 minutes overall, but totally fine at 37 minutes and after I stopped. If I can do 30 minutes tomorrow just fine, I think I should add a little resistance (say a 5lb weight on my knee?) on Thursday.

Other Aerobic (Water Play) 20:00 [2]
(injured)

Actually I was swiming with AJ for about 90 minutes, but some of it was mildly aerobic. Foot was a little sore early in the water play, esp. when I tried jumping off the bottom, but it recovered and was 95%+ fine all evening, and (through 9 am) on the next morning.

Monday Apr 7, 2003 #

Other Aerobic (Water Aerobics) 30:00 [2]
(injured) (sick)

Still congested and coughing a bit, but better than last week.

R-foot was mildly sore early in exercise (although it had just started snowing, so - weather?). By the end of the exercise my foot was fine, even though I did a little foot specific work at the end.

Other Aerobic (Water Running) 5:00 [4]
(injured) (sick)

Decided to do something hard, albeit short. I've got to get in cardio shape so that when I do start running again, I'm not _way_ slower than my competition... When I'm healthier, I think I'll add some swimming and water running to the end of the water aerobics class for better cardio work.

Strength (Foot work) 6:00 [1]
(injured)

Varied foot work, in water, at angles, followed by good calf stretch in and out of water.

Note

5pm: My R-foot (the injured one) has been doing really good all afternoon, including some walking around in the snow, without any complaint.

I took a funny step earlier today which really pissed off my LEFT foot in the same spot. And it's still a little tweaked (light burn on and off.) What the h***? Note that the L-foot has hurt occasionally, in the same spot for about 2-3 weeks now. I hope it's just some mirror image or compensation thing that's going to go away soon. I don't understand how it would have the same issue. I didn't do _anything_ hard recently to that side.

Sunday Apr 6, 2003 #

Strength 25:00 [1]
(injured)

25 min. of foot work (30min. + interrupts) plus 2 hours of standing and light walking around in O' shoes in terrain in AM, and then 2.5 hr. of slow walking in PM.

Foot was doing a very light burn occasionally in AM O' shoes, and was 'tired' in Thu. PM walk, plus was a little sore/tingle slightly behind the normal spot in PM. Mid-PM-walk I did a full set of leg & arm stretches and my foot was almost 100% after that.

Saturday Apr 5, 2003 #

Strength 19:00 [1]
(injured) (sick)

Lots of walking today. Probably on my feet for ~4 hours, at mall, out to lunch buffet, then outside doing car errands, then inside doing lots of cleaning up toys and cooking and stuff.

Foot had a few sharp pains on and off, but they died away pretty fast. I'm walking with very little limp. For the first 5 steps or so at the mall, I took no-limp fast walk steps before noticing a light, but sharp pain on a few steps and then I slowed up.

Late in the evening, my foot was only doing an occasional light burn, and then I did 10, 7, and 2 minutes of foot work. At the end of each chunk it was starting to burn lightly so I stopped. Now, late in the evening, it's doing a very light, but continuous burn. Probably overdid the total foot activity a little today, but it's not too bad considering.

Tomorrow should be a little less strenuous than today. And weekdays even lighter. But I'll still be doing some work. Hopefully with my foot getting totally normal next week?

And my sinus infection seems to be finally getting better this evening.

Friday Apr 4, 2003 #

Other Aerobic (Water Aerobics) 30:00 [2]
(injured) (sick)

Took it a little easy in the pool due to lingering sinus congestion.

Last night I walked ~300m around a restaurant and mall and was on my feet for ~20 minutes, in my new shoes/orthotics and my R-foot was burning a little in the spot especially when putting weight on my R-foot. It recovered quickly when Angelica drove home, and then I switch to O-shoes at home. Not 100%, but no stepping pain, just light pain at the limits of walking.

This morning I wore my old blue shoes and old (Spenco) orthotics and my foot was more or less fine outside walking around, like inside. I've probably lost 75% of the limp AND 75% of the pain compared to just 8 days ago. Yay.

Still, I can't walking normally with no pain, but at this rate I might be at that level by next week. I plan to keep up the water aerobics and light foot exercises only for at least a week after there is no pain at all (so probably until ~4/18) at which point I plan to add some intentional walks for exercise. If I can get that up to 20 minutes of hard walking, I'll start inserting a little running in the middle of that.

Probably O-shoes and walking on flatish grass to begin with.

Strength (Foot work) 37:00 [1]
(injured)

37 min. continuous. Foot totally fine at 30 minutes, by 37 it was burning a little and now, 15 minutes later, it's still burning a little. Oops. Hopefully it'll recover soon.

Note

After foot exercise, foot burned and ached very lightly for much of next 2-3 hours. Then I went swimming again (with the family this time) and my foot was even a little sore in the water. Later in the evening though, it got better, and only hurt once - when I balanced myself by pushing off my big toe with the leg out sideways and the ankle twisted outward to get the best push on the toe. That cause a light, but sharp, pain that took ~5 minutes to go away.

All-in-all, a little more pain today than normal this week. However, it's supposed to rain tonight and tomorrow morning, so I think my foot is reacting to that.

Boy this cold sucks.

But the foots doing okay. 28 minutes in 3 seperate blocks. stopped at momentary light pain and 2nd and 3rd blocks, and pain stopped in seconds.

Foot in O' shoes all day, no brace. Foot very light burn on and off in evening. Walking with far less of a limp than the brace-like walk I was doing originally, and I did walk around as much as normal today if not a little more, although I didn't go out...

More normal activity + still very low pain = good!
