today's training #1 was at a small local race. i thought i would be okay now to put a bit more speed into my orienteering but nope. i think i was checking my map and direction about half as much as i should and i ran a lot in the wrong direction (one good leg out of 11 isn't good :-( ) at 11 (coming in from totally the wrong direction) i started running back to 10 (also in not quite the right direction). so then i stopped for a bit and wondered how it could go so badly and then i jogged round the last bit.

at least my legs were feeling more normal after a good night's sleep and lots of food, feeling stronger in the tough terrain than i have been recently.

and to make 4 trainings in just over 24hrs, one last small course. ran with Johan and David, thought i could learn something from them. the legs i took the lead i wobbled about a bit. they thought i wasn't looking up enough but i was trying so hard to get a good direction all the time (not succeeding always). maybe i wasn't holding the map/compass so well?

then back in the bus back to Turku. not really a good feeling. now is not a good time to be unable to orienteer, there's no time to give my technique the overhaul it needs (NORT on Saturday). not so much looking forwards to it if i'm going to keep running like this :-(

Jämsä training, fresh from the ferry and 3hrs in the Linné bus. more working on compass routines and getting better, looking more often to my map and compass and having more confidence in it. also ran best in the small WOC long-relevant bit :-) (mostly tough and green and tbh quite minging)

physically not so great again, eating better now but not much energy, one big mistake when i got low on blood sugar and stopped knowing what i was doing.

quick recovery lake dip, food shopping and time for training #2. also took this easy even though it was a gaffled relay training. better legs now and still good compass, once or twice mind wandering a bit on longer legs when i got bored at that speed. felt like it's going somewhere with the orienteering again.

Nåsten contour only, focus on compass. quite pleased, mostly a good feeling but some controls on non-contour features (not on my map) in the green were harder to be confident for.

really empty in legs, having some kind of virus or maybe stress and finding it hard to eat enough.

quite a minimal jog and a few drills. would have been better with a hard training on Thursday instead of tonight but love a bit of City Cup and it's always on a wednesday. so a quick turnaround but then quite easy until Sunday.

Orienteering - hard race 16:30 [4]

Bit of a stressy one at City Cup! chaotic car journey down and rush to warm up, didn't manage to take any time to focus or think about what i wanted to work on before i started. hard to get my brain ahead of my legs for most of it. quite a nice course with some route choices but unfortunately the red lines covered lots of important details (steps etc) and i got caught out a few times. crashed into some people and got scared by dogs, all part of the Stockholm experience. some good controls on the simpler bits and maybe the best routes for some legs, need a closer look.

moving quite okay but very stop-start due to lack of "flow" in orienteering, not really how it should feel! looking forwards to being back in the forest now, will be there the rest of this week (both in Uppsala and Jämsä).

Running - hard intervals 30:00 [4]

Linné terrain intervals in Nåsten. 5x 3-2-1 with 1min rest throughout, no extra rest between sets. really fun intervals round a wide corridor where we all kept together by running shorter or longer lines in the terrain. Mixture of quick forest, heavy marsh and everything in between. tough but i kept at it for the full session and enjoyed feeling strong.

no training this morning, surveying instead for some hours. taking some extra rest now up to WOC, the focus will be more on getting a little bit extra from my harder trainings and recovering between them. love doing lots of hours but it's not winter any more...

turned into plan B when i got the what i'd thought from the map was an aquaduct but turned out just to be a 5m gap where the bridge was missing. my long jump PB is about 4m20 from when i was about 12 so decided not to try my luck. i was next to backbana so ran 5 of the hills at easy speed, then home again. saw two snakes enjoying the sun.
