Another bad race. direction was much better but couldn't make sense of any details near the controls, often really close but not matching the map to the ground at all well. most worrying though was how disappointed i felt even though it was only a local race, something approaching shame, and feeling like i'll never get any better :-(

Pre-running a Long course at Östfora. this was the wrong day to leave the long socks at home. it was tough, legs now mangled. some easier to warm up and down but large bits of the middle at race speed. mostly good apart from getting the exact right spot in the circle. mostly my fault but also it was hard to see the map well at the end.

Had planned for some hard training but realised that after yesterday it wasnt a good idea if i want to train well the rest of the week. mixed surfaces easy run, then drills, bounding up some hills and a bit of agility instead.

Sprint training 5. Pre-ran Friday's sprint. felt like i didn't get as much from this training as i could have, not focussing on any technique aim. always weird to run in your own back garden but just not really having my head in the right place - never great with orienteering when you've got a meeting to rush back for!

turned out there was some running involved. had to do a quick change into running kit in the back of a bus, emerge like a teambuilding superhero and run across Uppsala, pretty quickly so i wasn't late for any of the places i was helping out. then helped out in the evening too. not a typical day but fine once in a while for training and good fun :-)

Middle race (no elite classes). Wanted a hard training, couldn't use my compass properly, lots of mistakes and bananas. *sigh* it's getting a bit embarrassing to make mistakes so much, i think people expect me to do well these days but i'm not really that good yet.

Sprint training 4. Rest morning but got out for a run and then ultrasprints at Glimmervägen and Bloden. Aim was to keep close contact through all the direction changes. Went quite well, just another thing that needs a little time and energy allowed for. Improving at these.

started my two day coaching stint in Stockholm by showing how not to orienteer! actually out a good bit longer but took off my faff time. never been so lost so close to the controls. had some real problems visualising the slightly different map and 5m contours - not always good to run as you would in Uppsala! gave myself a nice challenge playing catch up in the chasing start in the afternoon...

... luckily, redeemed myself here and did all the overtaking i needed. much more sensible min/km, felt like i'd got the hang of it a bit more (helped to be on slightly less complex bit of terrain), my picture matched what was on the ground much better.

Sprint training 2: innebandy! i think this makes good agility training, one thing that's missing if i want to improve at sprint, so finally gave it a go. 2 vs 2 meant it was hard work. Hockey experience from many years ago of limited use but it was great fun.

ran home-Bloden, then back to KG, down to run a course in Nåsten, then an ultrasprint on Kung Björns Hög. after this i was really on my last legs so plodded back to KG for water then finished at the shop so i could have maybe the last ice cream of summer.

Day 1. travelling back to Uppsala. really pleased that my legs are a pretty good state after the summer, maybe even better than ever. still good with a rest though before trying to get stronger. need to do some strength training, been getting away with doing nothing recently but it wont last for ever...

Night Hawk day bit. hrrrm better than last night but thats not saying so much, still way too many mistakes and one huge one near the beginning, undoing all Sofie's good work with catching time and overtaking! still managed to go past Konnerud but not counting as a "stabil insats" at all :-( pleased to have some strength in the terrain after running last night too and we were the top team where all members ran twice. i am quite motivated to go and learn how to orienteer a bit better but now it's time for my Annual Week Off...

Night Hawk, the night bit. lots more time out there than i should have been. managed lots of compass mistakes (some pretty huge), reading the vegetation wrongly, panicking and trying to "gain time" when it was already lost and always time to read the wrong leg too. there's some gps carnage somewhere with my name on it. legs okay but it didnt really help much when i couldnt find anything!

after more travelling and lots of sleep, Nighthawk training in the hills near Asker, Oslo. shocked by how good the legs were (though i have been resting, coming down from the altitude and out of the heat) but brain still in the jungle. really have my work cut out to get my head more into this v different kind o orientering if i want to run cleanly. especially tomorrow night. eek :-D

Relay. back to sort of okay but not great physically, missed a lot of the action running alone (front) but in the final loop got to 3m from the control and couldnt see it in the undergrowth. took almost a mintue til i found it (when Annika and Sara came) and so i lost my lead. could i have done anything about it? dont think so. not the result we wanted as a team but there's something good to come one day.

Middle race. legs still not moving great but the terrain and course was a bit kinder to people who couldnt move so fast. faffed a lot of the decisions, lots of seconds here and there, but kept chilled out enough to avoid blowing up anywhere. average but an improvement. lovely to be out the city and swim in the river after.

Sprint race, really bad :-( maybe i can blame my hillrunning exploits (quads not wanting to walk let alone run, calves not great either) or the humidity. excuses excuses. would have been not too bad but started the final loop the wrong way. not a great day to have crap legs on the easy (boring?) course. small time moping but have decided the only way to break the year's bad sprint form (not caring enough to work for it but enough to be disappointed with the results) is to have a sprint to really go for. so next year at either woc or eoc i will have trained hard for the sprint and be in a position to run really well. not sure which, need to look at programmes (not prepared to give up the long focus so will see which fits best!)
