Note

Looking at my map from Saturday properly... lost 7mins 25 altogether. That's a lot. I definitely have work to do with my orienteering if I want to be race cleanly in technical terrain. I don't really have time to do much before Nordic Tour, but I'll do a bit of map geeking and hopefully one or two orienteering trainings practicing compass work, which was (as usual) where I was least confident.
Gonna have plenty improve on ahead of next year, luckily Uppsala is the ideal place for that :-)
12 PM

Aquarunning - easy 30:00 [2]

Easy training today.

Orienteering - easy race 36:52 [5]
shoes: Walsh PB racer

Asked not to be put on first team for the relays, not sure how my body would react. Was stiff but fine this morning. Left ankle a bit sore, either side of the achilles, especially on the left just below the back bit of ankle bone. Not sure what's going on there. Was fine for running, a bit stiff when I got out of the car at home this evening. Will take it easy for a few days and see physio so I know what's going on.
Still messy, two little mistakes and one BIG (2 1/2min?), in control most of the time though, good to practice head-to-head racing on this kind of terrain, things are slowly coming together :-)

Running - easy warm up/down 15:00 [2]
shoes: Walsh PB racer

Not long enough warm-down, being lazy cos I was tired!

Orienteering - easy race 1:08:32 [5]
shoes: Walsh PB racer

Very exciting, my first classic distance race as a W21E! Wasn't planning to run all of it, but enjoying the terrain and course and decided to keep going at no.11.
Technically pretty messy, about 6mins mistakes!!! Will analyse it properly tomorrow but mainly let down by poor fine navigation, fine on the long easy bits ;-)
But felt loads better than two weeks ago, some energy in my legs, not completely knackered at the end.
Ankles feeling it slightly, achilles fine until I stepped on an awkward bit of ground near the end and my heel went down a long way. Aware of it a little after that, but no real pain. Put it in the river for a bit afterwards and seemed completely okay after that. Maybe a little weak spot?

Alternative training 10:00 [3]

Alternative training 10:00 [4]

Alternative training 5:00 [5]

Not much time to train today, busy cleaning my flat. Felt like doing something a little bit different to intervals, so after 10mins kept putting up the resistance until the last few minutes before warm-down were really tough. Fun, would be good to do a bit of a longer version.

Running - easy 30:00 [2]
shoes: Adidas Supernova Glide

Okay so I went out last night, bit of a rest day fail. Legs feeling tired this morning! Things seemed okay when I ran apart from my ankle stabilising muscles (must be a better name for them somewhere?) which were tight and uncomfortable. Physio rescheduled to this afternoon so will get them sorted out hopefully.

Alternative training intervals 15:00 [4]

10 x 90/30s, shorter than normal cos of being post-night out. No more clubbing for me til August!!

Wednesday May 26, 2010 #

Note
weight:55.1kg (rest day)

I've had a few days of quite a lot of training (for me!) and so I'm taking a rest day before I get completely exhausted, ill or injured. Thought about doing something really easy but it probably wouldn't be worth it, I'll wait til tomorrow instead.

Tuesday May 25, 2010 #

Alternative training 35:00 [2]

Easy (proper training this evening), then did some more calf raises, on a step this time. Was fine. Hopefully will get permission from physio to run again :-D
4 PM

Unspecified (Rounders!) 30:00 [0]

On the meadows with Alice, Chloe, Paddy, Peter and some of Alice's friends. Not sure what intensity to put for this, half of it was standing about and the other half sprinting about. Didn't feel my achilles AT ALL :-)
Felt my shins a bit, but right down near my ankles so probably those tendons, like before.
7 PM

Aquarunning - easy 42:00 [3]

Aquafit on at the same time, so only half the pool but the ABBA cd they were playing for it really made up for it, was way more fun than normal :-)

Monday May 24, 2010 #

10 AM

S&C 38:00 [3]

Usual circuity stuff. No pain in achilles this morning and managed 3 x 20 single leg calf raises (without step) okay :-)

S&C 15:00 [3]

Alternative training warm up/down 25:00 [1]

7 PM

Note

No training this evening, having a bit of an easier day. Hot water bottle on my calves and then stretching them out a bit more instead.

Sunday May 23, 2010 #

10 AM

Aquarunning - easy 30:00 [2]

Swimming (kickboard) 5:00 [2]

Kind of a warm-up
3 PM

Running - easy 1:16:00 [3]
shoes: Adidas Supernova Glide

My first and last Pentlands run of the year. Left achilles a bit niggly after the first hill so didn't go all the way to the top of Carnethy, went down and round the reservoir instead. Took it steady, was fine on the flat. :-)
So will take a couple of days off running and see physio Tues night, should be fine.
Looking back at my training, maybe I've increased my running a bit too much in the last few days? Oops, I guess this is what happens when I have nothing much else to do and am a bit lax with discipline. Definitely gonna plan next week better and make sure I DONT DO TOO MUCH...

Played rounders for quite a while at the barbecue. Also ate an obscene amount of meat and cake. Fat lass strikes again...
3 PM

Running - easy 33:00 [2]
shoes: Adidas Supernova Glide

Not sure how long I really took, decided to just go have some fun with a chilled out jog and didn't take a watch with me.
Felt well tired this morning but better this afternoon. Also did some summer shopping XD. Now going to a barbecue, is this the perfect day?

Thursday May 20, 2010 #

Alternative training 50:00 [2]

Not what I'd had planned! Was going to do 3min / 1min intervals, but feeling tired still, almost got a sore throat, body not wanting to work any harder than that. Seems like I've run myself down again (easily done with me!), maybe all the travelling at the weekend straight after exams was more of a stress than I thought. I also felt like I was doing it more for the sake of pushing myself than because I enjoy training, which is unusual. So, will have a think about what to do next. I guess the most sensible thing for me today might have been to take a rest day, but I didn't quite dare. I'll probably take one tomorrow, though I know it doesn't make up for it...

Running - easy 48:00 [2]
shoes: Walsh PB racer

Round and about in Holyrood Park. Some terrain running and hills. Had planned to make a long session by combining with some x-trainer at CSE to finish off, but feeling mega-tired today so will do a long session later in the week. Going to take the afternoon off and sleep a bit more (cloudy today so will stay indoors and work on the tan another time...)

No pain where it had been so painful at the weekend, but could feel something on the top of my left shin at times, about half way up. Will see if it gets any worse in the next few days. But generally happy with it, my longest training run since January!!!

S&C 20:00 [3]

Even felt tired doing this, definitely time to rest a bit...

Orienteering - easy 24:10 [4]
slept:7.5 shoes: Walsh PB racer

First bit of long race. My legs are not happy with me today! The problem is in the stabilising muscles above the inside of my ankles. It was painful to warm up, stopped when I started, but came back after 20mins. I hadn't really planned for the race to be anything other than training but it was quite worrying. I keep getting told that it's NOT stress fractures but it would be nice to not feel like a cripple!
I took the orienteering as fast as felt comfortable for my legs. I lost time on the first two controls but then got into the scale (ages since I ran on 1:15,000!!!) and the contours and really enjoyed the foresty bits. Much better than yesterday, kept in control more.

Real crap night's sleep though: snoring people and wandering downstairs at 3am cos I was hungry!

Running - easy warm up/down 25:00 [2]
shoes: Walsh PB racer

Includes jogging back along the track to the finish from 7, where I stopped.
5 PM

Alternative training (Recovery) 20:00 [1]

Recovery for my tired legs, followed by a thorough stretch.

Orienteering - easy race 43:00 [5]
slept:9.5 shoes: Walsh PB racer

What a disaster! Awful run. Legs really empty when warming up and head really empty when I started the race. Started not too badly but deteriorated to really rubbish! Felt the same as at British Middles a few weeks ago. I wonder why. Here are some theories...

1) My really bad run at British Middles might not have been caused by training hard the two weeks beforehand. That race was at the same time of day to this one... maybe I'm not eating well for running this time of day?

2) Another thing these two races had in common was that I was nervous beforehand and aware that I wanted to run as well as I could. Maybe the nerves are what's draining me of energy?

3) For both these races I wasn't with my family (unlike my races where I felt better, like Touch, UK Cup final, British Relays)... maybe I'm still not used to preparing mentally when I'm with different groups of people? I normally chat a lot with my family before races (including letting out angst!) and maybe this is what gets me in a better frame of mind.

With no uni work left to do, I'll have time to think about how I can help avoid these problems in future races :-)

Sooooo not happy with myself but I KNOW I can do better.

Running - easy 20:00 [2]
shoes: Adidas Supernova Glide

Normal little loop of Holyrood Park before breakfast, seeing how my shins are. Complaining at the start, especially left side, but eased off. This doesn't mean things are okay, but it should mean it's not a stress fracture and so I can still do some stuff. Think it's all still to do with the tendons on the front inside of the ankle, I have a bruise there on the left again. Will see Kim about it on Saturday, and physio in Edinburgh next week sometime. Soooooo annoying!
11 AM

S&C 20:00 [3]
weight:54.7kg

Some basic stuff, stretching and a sauna afterwards. Dropped my favourite earrings under the sauna shelfy bit though :'-(
Surprised I don't weigh more considering the amount of junk I've eaten this week!!

Easyish today, making sure m leg was fine (it was :-) ) and not making myself too tired for exam time this afternoon. Was a bit bored, but day saved by Sash megamix, MGMT and Bob Dylan (!) on the music channels.
6 PM

Note

Bitch of an exam, a vodka orange and many Teviot nachos later and I have caved in to peer pressure and am going out to celebrate my freedom tonight. 3 days is enough to recover from this for the middle race on Saturday, right?! Will try not to dance too much...

Running - easy 15:00 [2]
shoes: Adidas Supernova Glide

Not impressed, my left shin isn't really any better than Thursday, so didn't go as long as I had wanted to, bailed to the xtrainer instead. Physio not here all next week so not really sure what to do about it, a bit worried and pissed off. Will have to have a careful think about what I'm gonna do in the next few weeks to try and be fit for Nordic Tour...
There was a brass band marching about in Holyrood Park though (?), which cheered me up :-)

Note
(injured)

ARGH. On the way back from the library in my tired state I tripped over the pavement and now my left hamstring is pretty sore. BUMMER. Have got some ice on it, really hope it's one of those things that gets better quickly i.e. in time for next weekend. Definitely not my day today!
So don't know what training I'm gonna do tomorrow, maybe a trip to go swimming?

Friday May 7, 2010 #

Alternative training intervals 22:30 [4]

15 x 90s / 30s
Fun, but I'm feeling a bit depleted today. Rest day tomorrow, but before that another exam this afternoon and a jog before tea to test how my shins are.

Alternative training warm up/down 39:30 [1]

includes recovery between intervals
6 PM

Running - easy 23:00 [2]
shoes: Adidas Supernova Glide

Jog in Holyrood Park. My left shin is feeling sore, and closer to the bone than I would like, so not such a happy bunny! Will book a physio to get advice on it and also do something about my back / SI joint, which felt pretty odd. Needs a lot of back stretches I think.

Alternative training warm up/down 10:00 [1]

S&C 43:00 [3]

plenty of shoulder and upper body stuff, plus usual. lunges weren't great though, really tight in r side lower back, maybe my SI joint is jammed up again? Stretched it out lots but still feels odd.

Tuesday May 4, 2010 #

Alternative training intervals 24:00 [4]

Tough, legs tired this morning! 8 x 3min/1min.

Alternative training warm up/down 27:00 [1]

5 PM

S&C 28:00 [3]

7 PM

Note

Physio: got my shins sorted out again, its not actually on the shin which is great, but its the muscles on the inside, which pull my feet up in the right place, they really tightened up over the weekend cos I'm not so used to running on terrain at the moment. Told to take tomorrow off running but run Thursday, building up amount of rough terrain gradually on each run.

Monday May 3, 2010 #

11 AM

Orienteering - easy race 36:26 [5]
shoes: Adidas Supernova Glide

UK Cup final, a bit of a cross-country course round an army barracks. Still managed to lose a bit of time though (about 40s through route choices and being a bit blonde?), felt stronger physically than before, the k's are starting to work. Still got tired and slowed towards the end though: more intervals needed... Muscles on inside of both shins really tight after yesterday, think i got away with it but definitely no running tomorrow.
Didn't get my head into it until about control 10, but had fun, was real good running training for bigger races :-)

Running - easy warm up/down 20:00 [1]

Jogging, drills and all that...

Sunday May 2, 2010 #

11 AM

Orienteering - easy race 30:55 [5]
shoes: Walsh PB racer

BOC relay, first leg, first time racing for a really competitive EUOC team :-)
Felt awful first thing this morning, and in the race kept feeling like I was gonna go dizzy, but made myself take it steady and kept going well. Technically easy terrain, still managed to lose a few seconds here and there but quite pleased with my navigation on the whole. Need to sharpen up, tomorrow will be good practice for that.
Physically stronger than two weeks ago (not saying much!), still work to do but feel like fitness is coming back a bit now. Shins aching afterwards up the muscle on the inside, both legs, have massaged them, hope they feel okay for tomorrow.

Running - easy warm up/down 22:00 [1]
shoes: Walsh PB racer

Jogging about and trying to do drills in the start box

Saturday May 1, 2010 #

Note
(rest day)

Not running BOC individual, so kind of an enforced rest day as I watched my family and revised. Looking forwards to a fast and furious relay tomorrow :-)
