At the time trial last night, I laughed out loud when they issued me number 868, which was mounted sideways behind the seat post. It literally jumped back and forth between 868 and 898 when I'd look at it. I thought about getting my sharpie and adding a line below it. Not only did the finish team miss my number, but waiting in numerical order to start a bunch of people made comments about how it and all the other ambiguous numbers made their head explode, like 866 and 869.
And, for the record, I advocate using stands 66, 68, 86, 89, 89, and 99, but just to be careful. Skipping numbers just creates opportunities to screw up. Also, on our stands, the number is visible from the side with "up" being obvious.
