Orienteering race 4:05:23*** 16.68 km (14:43 / km) +323m13:25 / km ahr:159 max:183 shoes: Nike Trail (Blue)
4-hour Twi-Night O, set by Dave Waller.
So much fun. Dave really overdid himself on this one. I'm impressed. The winner (Mike) visited 23 of the 39 controls. I was halfway around the lake (having walked there), and I was waking up controls. It blew my mind.
I got the map before the mass start, and I just couldn't see a good strategy. Hueston Woods can be unexpectedly green, so I wasn't in the mood to just go bashing through fight. I noticed a bunch of fairly quick and easy high-scoring controls on the other side of the lake---I figured it was too far to go in 4-hours. I guessed I could do 16km in 4-hours, and it looked close. I saw the opportunity to just make a direct loop around the lake, and skip everything in sight. If 2 route choices were similar in time, but one had higher points, I took it. I figured, "I've never been around the entire lake---it might be fun."
So, yeah, I basically picked going all the way around rather than spending time figuring out an optimum points strategy. Also, I walked the entire way, save literally 100m or so. Heart rate was pretty sporty for 4 hours, though.
More later. I'm beat beat beat. If I can walk tomorrow I'll be happy.
Also, my Garmin 305 let me down! I had it on 1-sec recording and it overwrote the first km or so. (Distance is reported right, as far as I can tell.) I should have remembered that happens. The S should be in the same spot as the F. (click blue globe)
I overtimed by 5:44 or 5:23 (?). That means I lost my highest point score (80) plus 10 points for each minute after the first. I'm a little bummed about it---I had at least twice or three times that in lost time---a few my fault and a few "old map" issues (greener than mapped). If I had it to do over, I'd do the same route, more-or-less.
