2m ARDF at Mt. Airy, set by Marji Garrett (first time course setter). A tough, tough course (for me). I had a lot of hesitation, and one huge monster error that caused much of that hesitation.

The first control should have been 4. It was placed in probably the one spot on the entire map that made it hard to find and let it throw off difficult reflections, and I made it worse by not checking the 180 when I had found a few peaks. The weird thing is that I don't think I ever had a direct signal from 4, and when I was close to it, I didn't check the 180. So -1 for me today.

I had reliable bearings (I though) for 4 from several locations, and they were all wrong.

The best order was 45312, and I found 5312---I gave up on 4. With the accumulation of bad bearings, I would have spent an hour more finding it because I would have first had to prove all of my previous knowledge wrong. It was on the eastern spur, behind the Oak Ridge Lodge.

I broke my own rule: Pay attention to all the transmitters early in the race.
